Arrested Development - Season Two (2003) Review

Arrested Development - Season Two (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Normally I hate it when people (including myself) write reviews for DVDs that haven't even come out yet. But I'm so excited for the 2nd season of Arrested Development to come out on DVD that I'm going to write one anyway! (Don't worry, I'll come back and update the review once I actually get the DVD.)
This is, in my opinion, the funniest show on television. My favorite thing about this show is how it is a "comedy for smart people." If you like dumb and "easy" humor, then there is probably still some stuff in here that you'll enjoy... BUT if you like clever/witty humor, you'll LOVE this show. The more you watch it, the more jokes you'll understand and the more funny the jokes will be. There are even jokes foreshadowing other jokes several episodes down the road (e.g. Buster's "I never thought I'd miss a hand so much" when looking at his old hand chair in "Amigos"). There's no way you could ever catch everything on your first viewing, and that's why the DVDs are so great.
While the 1st season is incredible, I'd have to say that the 2nd season might be even better. The jokes just keep building (so it's even funnier if you've seen the 1st season). The running storyline of Tobias as an "on call" understudy of the blue man group is great... even at the end of the season (well after that story has ended) you can still see blue smudges on everything in the house. The whole thing about Buster losing his hand is hilarious and contributes greatly to my favorite episode of the season, "Motherboy XXX" (which has one of the funniest endings I've ever seen). I could go on and on: the Veals, Gene Parmesan, Mrs. Featherbottom, GOB's wife, Maeby's job, "Scandalmakers"... it just never stops!
FOX cut back this season's original order of 22 episodes to only 18 (allegedly so they could introduce "American Dad"... but there are even jokes about the cut, like when the Bluth Company's order for homes is cut from 22 to 18). While it's disappointing to think we could have had four more episodes, I'm more than willing to trade those four episodes for a whole 3rd season. This is the funniest show on TV!

In this 5 time Emmy®-winning comedy's hilarious second season, Michael Bluth, once again determined to be free of his dysfunctional family, packs up the car and his son George-Michael and heads for Arizona. But he's soon pulled over by the police who tell him that his father, George Sr., has broken out of prison. Due to the company's shady business deal with Iraq, Michael could face prison time, so he returns home to clear his name even as George Sr. secretly flees to Mexico, Tobias decides to be an understudy for the Blue Man Group, and Lucille begins a torrid affair with her husband's twin brother, Oscar. Arrested Development Season 3 will begin airing this fall on FOX.

Mr. Belvedere: Seasons One & Two Review

Mr. Belvedere: Seasons One and Two
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shout! has done another excellent job with their release of Mr Belvedere seasons one & two. The episodes are all the original network episodes, not syndicated cuts. The original opening credits have been restored, inculding the original pilot opening. No music is replaced. The video is for the most part fine. Occasionally there is a blurry spot but the show is over 20 years old. The audio sounds fine also, but occasionally the sound is slightly lower in some spots.
Now for the show itself. I watched this show when it originally aired and haven't seen it much in syndication since. My memory of the show is mostly from it's original network run. I loved the show then but wasn't mature enough to fully appreciate it's humor. After watching this set I enjoyed the show even more than I remembered. As an adult I can catch the adult jokes that I missed when I was a kid. This show is as entertaining to adults as it is to a younger audience. It holds up well. I watched episode after episode not wanting to come to the end and enjoying every second of it.
The set does have special features. There are interviews with the surviving cast members (minus Tracy Wells). They talk about how much fun they had on the show, including the pranks they played on each other. They talk of their fond memories and how they are still rmeembered to this day for their Mr Belvedere roles. Hopefully future sets will have an interview with Tracy Wells. The other special feature is the SNL Mr Belvedere fan club skit. That has nothing to do with the show, but it is hysterically funny. Tom Hanks is in it. The set also features two clips Family Guy in which Stewie sings the Mr Belvedere theme song. This is also mentioned in the interviews.
If anyone is on the fence about buying this set and worrying that they won't enjoy it as much as they remember, worry no more. The show is better than remembered. A few plots may be dated but as a whole the show stands up very well. You won't be disappointed.

Despite the objections of George, Mr. Belvedere is hired and quickly sets about whipping the Owens family into shape.Mr. Belvedere premiered in 1985 and enjoyed a six season run, but has endured ever since as a symbol of its time. The story of one family trying to have it all, with some unlikely help, the show was not afraid to deal with real issues and still make us laugh. Walt Disney Treasures: Zorro - The Complete Second Season Review

Walt Disney Treasures: Zorro - The Complete Second Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Complete Second Season is the definitive version that Disney Zorro fans have waited years for. Covering the 39 episodes that comprise season #2 (1958-1959), this limited edition (and numbered) 6-disc set of 30,000 includes a Certificate of Authenticity, a collectible pin (very handsome showing a silver sword with a shadow of Zorro & his horse superimposed on top), as well as a black-and-white photo postcard showing Guy Williams in his Zorro costume. A booklet outlining the contents of the set can also be found here. The set comes handsomely encased in a black metal tin, fitting of this B&W series where the hero wears an all-black costume.
A 3:29 intro by Leonard Maltin introduces the episodes and gives a brief overview of the series and these particular episodes along with the extras on these discs. The remastering is evident on these episodes. The picture is clear and so is the sound; naturally, with the way it was originally recording, a digital surround experience is not possible, but the Dolby Digital recording is crisp, clear, and the score sounds better than it has in years. And no...there are no colorized versions here. Just the genuine black and white originals.
Besides the 39 episodes (starting with "Welcome to Monterey", original air date of 10/9/1958 and finishing with #39 "Finders Keepers", original air date of 6/2/1959), there is a 6th disc of bonus material. Here you will find 2 hour long episodes:
1. "Zorro: The Postponed Wedding," original air date of 1/1/1961, from Walt's anthology TV series "Walt Disney Presents." Clocking in at 49:04, this episode features Annette Funicello, who is beginning to mature into a very pretty young lady.
2. "Zorro: Auld Acquaintance," original air date of 4/2/1961, from Walt's anthology TV series "Walt Disney Presents." Starring Ricardo Montalban & Ross Martin ("Wild Wild West") this episode is 49:09 long.
There is also a featurette entitled, "Behind The Mask" (7:52) which is a short look at Zorro's leading man, Guy Williams. Also known as Professor Robinson on "Lost In Space," Williams is often regarded as the quintessential Zorro. Well-liked by his costars (Suzanne Lloyd is quoted here as saying Williams was "one of the most charming professional men I ever had the pleasure of working with"), he began as a model and then became a contract player at Universal. An injury sidelined him and caused him to take up fencing. A call to audition for Disney's Zorro was a fortuitous break for the actor, and catapulted him into stardom. Zorro's stunt double, Buddy Van Horn is also interviewed here, along with Williams' son, Guy Williams, Jr., who obviously has many fond memories of his father and this particular role. Interestingly enough, it is recounted that most action scenes were shot on Fridays so that any injuries would have the entire weekend to heal! Rare color movies of Williams performing at Disneyland as Zorro are shown here; Van Horn recalls them staying at the Disneyland Hotel and taking advantage of the carte blanche they had at the Hotel. Author Antoinette Lane, Guy Williams: The Man Behind the Mask, is also interviewed about Williams, recounting what a role model he was, playing a father figure in "Lost in Space" and a protector in "Zorro."
Finally take a trip to the Walt Disney archives in Burbank on the studio lot (10:55). Leonard Maltin and Guy Williams, Jr. display original costumes and sword from the show, calling particular attention to the lavish detail (genuine silver thread, exquisite embroidery, and heavy wool) that is evident in these pieces made by Western Costume. Two costumes are also shown with the famous "Z" emblazoned on them, including one for Henry Calvin's oafish and comedic Sergeant Garcia. Next up a generous sampling of the more than 500 licensed items that were sold to promote the Disney series, including lunch boxes, rings, child costumes, and even roller skates!
This fantastic set is a must-have for Disney fans both new and old alike. Quality entertainment presented in a quality package.

The Critic - The Complete Series (1994) Review

The Critic - The Complete Series (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Critic is the brainchild of Al Jean and Mike Reiss (producers of The Simpsons) and is produced by Gracie Films, also of Simpsons fame. It was a highly intelligent and very funny show that made fun of movies, Hollywood, TV stations at the same time as giving us a sympathetic hero and the whacky world he lives in.
Jay Sherman is short, fat, bald and dresses like dweeb, his ex-wife hates him, his boss is always on his back, women run from him in terror and his make-up lady humiliates him at every given opportunity. He's also voiced by the increasingly adorable Jon Lovitz and has one of the best catchphrases ever. HOTCHIE MOTCHIE!!!!!
The supporting characters are equally hilarious. Jay's crazy dad is always up to some kind of insanity. His pal Jeremy Hawke (star of the controversial and highly blasphemous Crocodile Gandhi movies) is always featured in some sort of dumb action movie clip. Even his tummy has a 'feed me' voice of its own. Though the honors go to Charles Napier, who is absolutely priceless as Jay's megalomaniacal, all-American hard-man boss.
It's hard to believe ABC ditched this after ONE EPISODE!!! What were they thinking? Even Fox eventually gave up on it. Sad considering how sharp the writing and humor was. How on earth does self-indulgent, over-rated and long, long past prime trash like Friends gets 10 seasons and The Critic gets 23 episodes. You won't find Jay Sherman all but winking at the camera or pausing until the fake laughter dies down.
This complete set comes with a fair amount of extras (the cinema screen trivia cards are great) but the best is fact that we get all the 'webisodes'. In 2000 Jay made a brief comeback on the internet and all those 5 minute shows are featured on the 3rd DVD. My only complaint is, after 22 brilliant episodes, it kind of dies out with an obnoxious and annoying 'clip show' than a proper end-of-season finale. Minor complaint nonetheless.
The shows are all presented in 1.33:1 fullscreen, as drawn with a good Dolby 2.0 soundtrack. If Family Guy can come back through strong DVD sales then let's hope the same for The Critic. Now only if Duckman would come to DVD...

From the producers of "The Simpsons"! Jon Lovitz is the animated Jay Sherman, a TV movie critic who is forced to review the most pathetic films which he always rates as "It stinks." In addition to the film parodies, the show also deals with his personal life: working for a tyrannical media mogul boss, his lovelife and his family. Three-disc release includes all 23 episodes from the entire first and second seasons!

National Geographic - Kratt Brothers: Be the Creature: The Complete First Season Review

National Geographic - Kratt Brothers: Be the Creature: The Complete First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the Kratt Brother's third television show, their first being "Kratt's Creatures", then moving on to "Zoboomafoo". Also, this is their first show geared towards an older audience.
This first season contains thirteen 47 minute episodes. Since no one has previously listed these out, I'll do so now. Underneath each, I will label which have more graphic predation scenes, as some have wondered about that. Disc 1:
1. BROWN BEAR:
The Kratt brothers go to the Alaskan Peninsula to see how bears coexist feeding and in everyday life. Then in the second half, they go to a new section of the Alaskan Peninsula to see how mother bears successfully raise their cubs.
PREDATION - Only mentioned in this episode, never shown.
2. WILD DOGS:
The Kratt brothers go to the Okavango region of Botswana to see how Wild dogs raise their pups. Then it's off on the hunt to see if they can keep up with the dogs. Finally, they emigrate with the young Wild dogs that are looking to start new packs.
PREDATION - There are some quite graphic predation scenes when the Wild dog's overtake their prey. *Also* - Regurgitation of the meat for the pups is shown.
3. LION:
The Kratt brothers go to the Chobe region of Botswana to witness the spectacle of lions on the hunt.
PREDATION - This may be the worst episode as far as predation scenes go.
4. LEMURS:
The Kratt brothers go to the Mozambique Channel off of Madagascar, to see as many lemurs in as much of Madagascar as they can.
PREDATION - None. Disc 2:
1. MANATEES:
The Kratt brothers go to the Florida Peninsula to follow the plight of Manatees in winter, and talk about the danger that human's are bringing to their environment.
PREDATION - None.
2. JAPEANESE MACAQUE:
The Kratt brothers go to the Mountains of the Shiga Heights to witness the Monkey's unique hot-tubbing behavior and discuss their culture. They then travel to Southern Japan to see the Coastal Monkeys, and their different forms of culture.
PREDATION - None.
3. COASTAL CREATURES:
The Kratt brothers go to the Patagonian region of Argentina to see the lives of the many coastal creatures that live there. Also, they try to document the Orca's unique method of beach hunting.
PREDATION - The final scenes of the Orca's catching seal pups is quite
graphic. Disc 3:
1. CHIMPS:
The Kratt brothers go to the Ngamba Island Sanctuary in Uganda, Africa to see orphan chimps getting a second chance at life. Then, they go to the Kibale Forest Reserve to witness Wild Chimpanzees on the hunt of Colobus Monkeys,
PREDATION - The scenes of Chimp's eating monkeys is quite disturbing.
2. MONGOOSE:
The Kratt brothers go to the Mweya Peninsula in Uganda, Africa to follow the lives of a pack of Banded Mongoose.
PREDATION - A pup is killed by a monitor lizard.
3. SHARKS:
The Kratt brothers go to False Bay, South Africa to witness sharks seal-hunting.
PREDATION - Sharks leaping out of the water to snag seal decoys and a
shark chasing a seal. No actual killing or disturbing scenes
here.
4. BATS:
The Kratt brothers go to Bracken Cave, Texas, to see the largest concentration of Mexican Free-tailed Bats in the world.
PREDATION - Some young bats being eaten by beetles and snakes are sad. Disc 4:
1. KANGAROO:
The Kratt brothers go to the Snowy Mountains of Australia to live with a mob of Eastern Gray Kangaroos. This episode depicts the life-cycle of the male and female.
PREDATION - None.
2. BABOON:
The Kratt brothers go to the Simien National Park in Ethiopia to find out who's in charge of the Gelada Baboon society.
PREDATION - None. Special Features:
Explore a Creature Fact-files. This is a great collection from the Kratt brothers. Can't wait till' Season 2!
UPDATE: Season 2 is looking highly unlikely by now. :(

Jake and the Fatman - Season One, Vol. 2 (2008) Review

Jake and the Fatman - Season One, Vol. 2 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your a fan of Joe Penney (From Riptide)then you'll love this '80's series. Joe play private investigator Jake Styles who works with L.A district attorney J.L.(Fatman)McCabe. The relationship between the two leads works on alot of different levels. There's young guy(hothead)with older guy sensebilities. More like father and son in most cases. The action is good, and in the second season the show moves to Hawaii. But what stops me from giving this set 4 stars is the fact that Paramount split the season in half. Just like they did with Dynasty. Holding a series hostage and forcing you to buy the other half of the season is just downright greedy and mean on the studio's part. Don't they realize they would sell these series very well left intact? Especially when their competetors don't do it this way. In spite of Paramount's greed and lack of respect to their consumers, this is still a good series to have and own.

Growing up in the NY/NJ area during the 1980's, you may have stumbled upon The Uncle Floyd Show. I'm a fan from way back (even had my pictures up on the wall a few times, lol).
This DVD release is pure fun and nostalgia. Prior to purchasing this, I was relegated to buying bootlegs of a few shows on VHS, so it's nice to finally have an official DVD release (it's listed as copyright 2004 Floyd Vivino).
Some of the skits included are:
Tom Cavell's Ice Cream College on the Air, Julia Stepchild, Pasquale's Pizzaria, Eddie Slobbo, Sylvester Cavone, Mr. Grouch and Skip's Auto Sales.
There are also a few chapters on the dvd with Floyd playing the Piano, and, of course, Oogie!
If you're a fan, you simply cannot pass this up.
I only hope that even more material has survived for a volume 2 of the Uncle Floyd Show.
(hey Floyd, take Mugsy's tapes and release more official DVD's!)

Life on Mars: The Complete Series Review

Life on Mars: The Complete Series
Average Reviews:

...and give them to the actors and writers behind Life On Mars. That's my prediction...another case of "posthumous award giving". The observation has been made that the American LOM has been adapted from the British version but I understand that the US production followed the original storyline for a while and then took a few radical turns. Variations on a theme, I guess, but it has been quite a ride. I assumed that they would have to bring this story to a conclusion within a couple of seasons because the premise just couldn't be strung out forever but ABC sure isn't doing it justice or doing us any favors by cutting it short and telling the producers to wrap it up prematurely.
If you didn't love Harvey Keitel before this series then you owe it to yourself to watch all of these episodes. Michael Imperioli absolutely rules as Ray...I swear that I knew this character back in the Seventies...really. Gretchen Mol is just enchanting. Jason O'Mara makes his lost-in-time character so sympathetic that you can't help but worry about where he'll end up in the end.
So long, Life On Mars...it was all too brief but it was wonderful.

Chappelle's Show - Season 1 Uncensored (2003) Review

Chappelle's Show - Season 1 Uncensored (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had caught snippets of Chappelle's Show here and there before, but I had never made a point of actually sitting down and watching a complete episode. Then a friend of mine told me about a hilarious skit featuring Dave Chappelle as a black white supremacist (he is blind and doesn't know he is actually a black man); if it was only half as funny as she said it was, I knew I had to see it for myself, so I soon bought myself a copy of Chappelle's Show Season One. Not only is the skit in question hilarious, it basically defines the type of humor Dave Chappelle brings to the comedy scene. I don't think the television viewing audience has ever seen anything like this before - certainly not to the extremes that Dave Chappelle takes it. When he jokes about the fact the show has not been cancelled yet, it actually rings with a bit of truth. Very few comedians could get away with this type of over-the-top humor.
To say that this is mature humor is something of an understatement. Adult language abounds, and all the bleeps you heard on television are now removed - thus, the Uncensored! tagline. You'll find a lot of jokes centered on human anatomy - especially female anatomy. Far beyond everything else, though, is a relentless comedic skewering of racism. Some would probably consider this a racist show, actually - the "n word" is used in abundance, and stereotypes of blacks, Asians, whites, and other races are exploited shamelessly. The whole point of the race-based comedy, though, is to show just how extreme and ridiculous racist thinking and behavior really is. Some people won't "get it," of course, and they will probably think Chappelle's Show is one of the most offensive things they have ever witnessed - and that's OK. The majority of viewers, I believe, will "get it" and will join me in an extended laugh-fest that lasts throughout all twelve episodes of Season One as well as the bonus materials included in this DVD offering.
Among the gut-bustingly funny stuff you will find in Chappelle's Show Season One are the antics of crack addict Tyrone Biggums (including a visit to a drug awareness day at an elementary school), Chappelle-ized scenes from hit films such as Roots and The Matrix, a news report detailing the profound aftereffects brought about by the paying of reparations for slavery, "Great Moments in Hookup History," a "Real World" episode featuring one really white guy living with five crazy African-Americans, a hard-hitting documentary detailing the racism of famous animal performers, a documentary covering great inner city gang wars of the 1980s, an interracial episode of Trading Spouses, numerous Chappelle-ized television ads, Ask a Black Dude features with comedian Paul Mooney, a hilarious look at the international Player Hater Ball, and of course a lot of crude jokes about drugs and bodily functions. The only bad thing about these episodes is the fact that they are sometimes rather short. Chappelle featured rap and hip-hop musical guests on each show, but those segments are not included on nine of the twelve episodes you get here (and it's only a half-hour show to begin with).
The comedy is a little uneven at times. A few skits never really catch fire and are thus forgettable, but the vast majority of the material here will have you rolling in the aisles. Even the kind of toilet humor that normally isn't that funny will have you in stitches because Chappelle just keeps going to the well so many times that he makes it funny despite itself.
Five of the episodes come with audio commentary by Dave Chappelle and the show's co-creator Neal Brennan (who is white, by the way), as does the extra 29-minute feature of bloopers and deleted scenes. I was actually a little disappointed by the audio commentary; it was informational but not as funny as I had expected. The bloopers and deleted scenes were also less than hilarious - but I realized long ago (thanks to Dick Clarke and Ed McMahon) that bloopers really aren't very funny much of the time. All these extras are just icing on the cake, though, as the twelve episodes of the show more than make this Season One collection worth the money. Heck, it's worth it for just the blind, black white supremacist feature by itself.

Paranormal State: The Complete Season One Review

Paranormal State: The Complete Season One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been very impressed with Paranormal State for many reasons. They do more than go into a situation and find evidence of spirits, a haunting, etc., they then try to solve the problem. They don't just say - "yeah, you've got a ghost, bye now." They help the family understand what is happening and why, they help the spirit move on (or not, if the family decides letting it remain is the right thing to do). It is all handled with sincerity and professionalism and great decorum. When they do "dead time" and ask questions (hoping to get answers on the EVP recorder), they don't bombard the entity with questions, they ask a question, then give it an opportunity to respond. They don't joke around when on site. They don't yak to each other. They focus totally on what they are doing. They are so polite and caring. Chip Coffey, the medium they bring in on some of the cases, is wonderful. He is very talented and I like him a lot. Although I do enjoy Ghost Hunters, too, the two series are as different as night and day. I look forward to Paranormal State II coming out on DVD as well when the new season ends.

Paranormal State is the very first series that explores paranormal investigations through the eyes and minds of college students. This series follows the dramatic life of Penn State University college student Ryan Buell and the other student members of one of the first university sanctioned Paranormal Research Society (PRS) as they seek to find the truth behind terrifying real life mysteries. Although the members of PRS are your basic college kids - dealing with the problems of school, dating, and finding their way in the world - they are definitely looking into other worlds as well, working on cases that include poltergeists, haunting and the darkest areas of the unknown. Each week they are contacted for help by outside parties ranging from The Catholic Church to ordinary families who are terrified by something supernatural happening in their lives.

The Twilight Zone - Collection 1 (1959) Review

The Twilight Zone - Collection 1 (1959)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those of us in the know, all TZ episodes have been available on DVD for quite some time, but in 40-some odd volumes that contained 3 to 4 episodes each and left you broke after about 20 volumes. Now, As I write this, we are a couple months away from being able to own the entire Twilight Zone series in a collection of 5 box sets,... Has Image Entertainment finally given TZ fans something worth emptying their pockets for? You bet.
Okay, so they still haven't put the series in chronological order. Don't wait -- this will probably never happen. It's an anthology series and there is no continuity here that absolutely demands you have the episodes in order. But what Image has done is put 9 volumes in each box set (Vols. 1-9 are contained in Collection 1) and made the cases a little more compact. These are great cases, by the way, and the box isn't just something to throw away either. The episodes in Collection 1 are among the most memorable: "To Serve Man", "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", "Time Enough At Last", "The Lonely", "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street", "The Invaders", and "It's A Good Life", to name only a few of the 35 episodes.
Quite simply, these releases (meaning not only Collection 1, but the 4 others) mean that you'll be able to own the series on DVD for [much less money than]it would cost you to buy the volumes individually...

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 1 (Bloodlust / Catalina Caper / The Creeping Terror / Skydivers) (1988) Review

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 1 (Bloodlust / Catalina Caper / The Creeping Terror / Skydivers) (1988)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In case you're new to the world of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (MST3K for short, that what us fans - "Misties" - call it), this is the famous TV show where a silhouette of a man and two robots sitting in theater seats provide running commentary for some of the worst movies ever made. The ninety-minute episodes are also scattered with sketches and songs and amount to some of the smartest, most pop-culture savvy, side-splitting comedy ever made.
This is the first of the four-episode collections of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" offered from Rhino (previously they had only offered them in single DVD editions). It contains an interesting mix of movies: a science-fiction horror flick, a drama about skydivers, a 60s beach comedy, and a thriller on a tropical island. Three of the episodes come from the excellent sixth season, when Mike Nelson was the human host and the wisecracks and comments had become razor sharp and fast and furious. One episode comes from the second season, when the show had a more laid-back, friendly humor when Joel Hodgson was the host. Although this collection skews toward the later seasons, it is still a good general introduction to the show for newcomers, since most of the episodes are terrific. Fans who favor Joel Hodgson's style won't enjoy this as much as the second and third box set, but for most fans the inclusion of "The Skydivers" and "The Creeping Terror" make it a must-own.
Here's what you get:
BLOODLUST! Episode #607. A rip-off of "The Most Dangerous Game," only with young college kids (one of whom is Robert Reed, future Brady Bunch dad!). The four dummies land on a jungle island to go exploring and become trapped by the rich but extremely wishy-washy maniac millionaire who owns the island. Apparently, he enjoys hunting down people to turn them into stuffed trophies. The film isn't really awful, just completely unoriginal and acted with total flatness. Robert Reed never seems more than mildly "cheesed" and "fed up" (to quote Mike and `Bots) with the life-threatening situation. But it's season six, and the show's writers couldn't do any wrong at this point, and the result is the usual hilarious romp.
CATALINA CAPER. Episode #204. This is the only Joel Hodgson episode in the collection, and it's an oddball entry in MST3K history: it's the only time the show took on an overt comedy. True, "Catalina Caper," a teen 60s bikini beach comedy, isn't funny at all, but since it doesn't take itself seriously it becomes a tough target to make fun off. Joel and the `Bots have a good time with the lousy `prat-fall' comic, the awful musical numbers (one featuring Little Richard, waaaay out of his element), skinny Tommy Kirk, and the famous `creepy girl,' but this is a spotty episode and the weakest in this pack. Don't form your opinions of Joel's episodes based on this one.
THE CREEPING TERROR. Episode #606. This is a classic, and one of the worst films the MST3K team ever took on. A big shag carpet (oh, excuse me, I meant `alien') starts eating the citizens of a quiet California town; or at least it gets close enough to them so they can hoist themselves into its mouth. And why is the town so quiet? Because while making the film, someone accidentally kicked the sound equipment into a lake, so the whole movie has almost NO DIRECT SOUND. Yep, we instead have a narrator telling us what the characters are saying, doing, discussing, and so on. You have to see it (or hear it) to believe it! Mike and the `Bots unload on this one, and it's a scream. One of the funniest episodes ever.
THE SKYDIVERS. Episode #609. One of the most beloved of all MST3K episodes. Writer Paul Chaplin said of it: "I don't want to criticize this movie. I'm too fond of the final result for our show...there's never been a better movie for our treatment." I'll drink to that. This drama about the loves and losses of people working at a parachuting school is so weird, so bizarrely scripted, so awfully acted, filled with so many inexplicably wack-o characters, and shot with such stunning ineptitude that it positively amazes. The riffing from the hosts is some of the best, sharpest commentary they ever did. This is the first of three movies MST3K did from director Coleman Francis (who makes Ed Wood look like Orson Welles!). The second one, "Red Zone Cuba" is available on its own DVD. The third, "The Beast of Yucca Flats" isn't out yet, and Rhino should really get this one on a future collection.
All four films are offered in "non-MST3K" versions on the flip side of their discs, which is a nice feature if you really want to see how much the show added to these awful films. "Bloodlust" and "Catalina Caper" are all right - although dull - on their own, but see how long you can sit through the other two without Mike and Robots before you tear your eyes out!
So there you have it, three of the most phenomenally funny episodes of MST3K, plus one of the most unusual. A great package for fans and newcomers alike! (Just watch out for acid in your parachute!)

Monsterquest - Complete Season 1 (History Channel) (Steelbook) Review

Monsterquest - Complete Season 1 (History Channel) (Steelbook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are one of those people who often wonders what might be roaming the woods behind your house, what might be lurking beneath the surface of the lake, or what made that bump in the night then I suggest watching one of these thirteen episodes before going to bed. This series is an overview of many of our local cryptozoological mysteries (Bigfoot, Champ, the Skunk Ape, etc). Several details set this series apart from many other such documentaries aired on television. First off, unlike National Geographic's "Is It Real?", this series doesn't try so hard to discredit the evidence. Also, unlike Sci Fi Channel's "Destination Truth", not all rumors and stories are accepted as fact. This series falls nicely in between, with a rational and scientific approach. Second, and more importantly, this series contains startalling new evidence that will make you gasp such as a digitally-enhanced close-up of the face of Roger Patterson's Bigfoot, recordings of sonic clicks coming from Lake Champalin (home of Champ), and the first ever video footage of a live giant squid!!
Each episode contains a computer-animated image of the creature based on eyewitness descriptions, dramatic reinactments of very recent sightings (some occuring in 2004), and equal voice time for believers and skeptics. Also in each episode, you get to follow a team of experts as they set out on their own expedition using old and new research methods to track the legendary beasts and uncover DNA evidence. Overall, I highly recomend this DVD for anyone who might be interested in the unknown, and I also believe those majoring in biology and zoology will get a kick out of it too. But mostly I recommend it to anyone who enjoys seeing the unusual.

Each episode of MONSTERQUEST is a mini-expedition to a remote, far-flung corner of the world. Science and technology come together to give viewers a greater understanding of these mysterious monsters bones and key pieces of proof are analyzed and submitted to a battery of tests. Instead of relying on the cliché grainy archival footage usually associated with these monsters, the series goes on-location with high-tech gadgetry (special cameras, listening posts, even underwater lures) to further the quest for answers. While the monsters may not necessarily be real, each episode does feature real scientists. The 13 50-minute episodes cover: Kraken: the Real Leviathon, Night of the Monkey Man, Stalin s Planet of the Apes, Creature of Snellgrove Lake, China s Lake Beast, Werewolf of Bray Road, Jurassic Fish Monsters, Creatures from the Fourth Dimension, America s Loch Ness Monster, Man-Eating Birds, Giganto II, Bigfoot and the Hounds of Baskervilles. Bonus: Short-Form Featurettes

Seinfeld - Seasons 5 & 6 Giftset (Includes Handwritten Script and Collectible Miniature Puffy Shirt) (1990) Review

Seinfeld - Seasons 5 and 6 Giftset (Includes Handwritten Script and Collectible Miniature Puffy Shirt) (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yep, pirates are in right now. Thank Johnny Depp for that and "Pirates of the Caribbean". Once again "Seinfeld" was ahead of the curve. "The Puffy Shirt" episode was one of many classics that came out of "Seinfeld" during its peak years-the fifth and sixth seasons. It's appropriate that it is in the Smithsonian right next to Captain Kirk's yellow spandex shirt and on the other side of the falsies of the first transvestite. Oh, and this shirt is a miniature puffy shirt (just in case you missed seeing it in stores). Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld and the cast found their groove and made the most of it with the most outrageous stories one can imagine in a comedy TV series. We also learn that just because a woman has a Chinese name that doesn't make her Chinese and that it's OK to eat out of the trash as long as your mother's girlfriend doesn't see you. Valuable lessons all and without them our lives would be diminished or, at the very least, less amusing. As time as progressed "Seinfeld" hasn't been the victim of "shrinkage" and doing the opposite of what was expected in TV paid off in spades. Gee it sounds as if the show mirrored George's life not Jerry's.
---
Columbia-Tristar has sprung for the best for "Seinfeld". The series is presented in high definition with a picture much, much better than what has been seen in syndication. "Seinfeld" was originally shot on 35mm film so some of the grain visible was inherent in the original film. I didn't detect any analog defects nor did I see any digital ones that were noticeable. The sound has nice presence and the dialogue is crystal clear.
Since the gift set is, essentially, the same as the individual releases (minus the puffy shirt and copy of Seinfeld's handwritten script), I'm going to break them down based on the season. With Season five "Jason+Larry=George" discusses the creation of George out of the parts of Jason Alexander and co-creator/writer/producer Larry David. "Inside Look" has featurettes for the following episodes: "The Puffy Shirt", The Glasses", "The Sniffing Accountant", " The Mango" , "The Lip Reader", "The Non-Fat Yogurt", "The Barber", "The Conversion", "The Stall", The Marine Biologist", "The Pie", "The Stand-in", "The Fire", "The Raincoats", "The Hamptons", "The Opposite" we also get deleted scenes for all of those episodes except "Sniffing", "The Lip Reader", The Barber" and "The Hamptons". Promotional spots are included as well. Stand up footage cut prior to the airing of the episodes is included as well.
Also included are alternate versions of "The Non-Fat Yogurt". One was created with an eye towards syndication and runs slightly longer. The original episode will play automatically unless you selected the syndicated version. There isn't a huge difference between the two episodes although, again, the syndicated version runs a little longer probably due to the timing and performances.
Season six has a half hour featurette calling "Running with the Egg" which provides an inside look at the creation of a single episode from conception to the time its shot. Bloopers are include and run about 20 minutes as well as a short animated version of the episode "The Race" entitled "Sein-imation: The Big Race". There's also a pair of more animated segments entitled "Seinfeld: Noir" and "Kramer vs. The Monkey". We also get "Inside Looks" for the following episodes: "The Big Salad", "The Pledge Drive", "The Couch", "The Soup", "The Switch", "The Race", "The Label Maker", "The Kiss Hello", "The Doorman", "The Diplomat's Club", "The Jimmy", "The Fusilli Jerry", The Face Painter" and "The Understudy". Deleted scenes include most of the above episodes as well with the exception of "The Fusilli Jerry", "The Jimmy" and with deleted scenes for "The Beard" and "The Scofflaw" as well.
Let's not forget the puffy shirt and the replica of the handwritten script. While these aren't as informative or fun as the extras include on the DVDs, it is nice to have something tactile that you can touch or play with while you're watching various episodes. I'd like to note that if you can get a better price on the two sets individually than the boxed set, I'd suggest that approach because, while thee extras are clever and fun, they don't add that much value to the package.
Commentary: We get a total of 14 commentary tracks from a variety of teams. Unfortunately, Michael Richards only appears on one for this set while Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander appear on three. Seinfeld appears on three commentary tracks one with Larry David which was a delight. I haven't had a chance to listen to all of these commentary tracks but I found a couple of the writers commentary tracks entertaining as well as we get the genesis of the story and the various changes the story went through before production.
Seinfeld at its peak. While the show would coast at the same level for some time, the writing, direction and performances never got better than seasons 5 and 6. The extras are great providing viewers a chance to see the creation of an episode, inside glimpses into some of the most popular episodes and commentary tracks that are both amusing and enlightening. If you absolutely need the puffy shirt and script (which make for a great gift with the set if you're giving it to someone else), keep in mind it's a miniature puffy shirt. The script is a miniature replica of a handwritten script as well.
