Best of MadTV Seasons 8, 9 & 10 (1995) Review

Best of MadTV Seasons 8, 9 and 10 (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved the first season release of MAD TV on DVD. I've been waiting forever for the second season to come out and then desperately awaiting seasons 3 to 6 which I believe where the best of the best.
This second DVD release is a bit of a big question. Why seasons 7, 8 and 9? They're not even the best seasons. In fact, season 7 was about the last of the funny seasons. They kinda started going down hill after that. I hope the rumour that MAD have decided to abandon complete season releases and release the so called "best bits" is not true.
I wouldn't have even minded if it was a so-called BEST OF Mad TV if they included sketches from the first 6 seasons as well. The best sketches and seasons where when Will Sasso, Alex Bornstien(Ms Swan), Nicole Sullivan(Vancomb Lady), Phil LaMarr(UPS Guy), Pat Kilbane(Mr Spock) Artie Lange(Slob), Bryan Callan(Kabana Boy), David Herman, Orlando Jones but they had all left by season 7 and are not on this DVD and sadly missed.
NOTE: Alex Bornstien does appear in one sketch of season 9 as Mrs Swan. I think that might have been a special guest appearance. But not enough to say she's in it. OVERALL
This DVD is OK, but it shouldn't have been released like this. I'd much prefer to see them released as a full season OR the very best of MAD-TV which would require a few more discs then just the one 2 hours long one here. You really see the decline during season 8, its ok, but it's far from the best of what MAD TV has done in the past. BONUS FEATURES:
The bonus features are worthless. They're about 3 or 4 bloopers of Stewart with or without commentary that's almost as boring as listening to a Farrelly brother's commentary track. They're not great at all. They were seen at the ends of those episodes and Commentary should be kept for something interesting. EPISODES

Drawn Together - Season One (Uncensored) (2004) Review

Drawn Together - Season One (Uncensored) (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The premise was simple: do the same thing as MTV's "The Real World," but instead of using real people, use Pikachu, Superman, Betty Boop, Link (from the Zelda games), a generic Disney princess, and so on, and parody everything from M.C. Escher to drug addiction to Chinese sweatshop labor along the way. Taking the idea behind the Joe Schmo Show ("a reality series that's not real") one step further, this show broke every rule and turned the television multiverse on its head. How can a show without one original idea possibly be this unique and fresh? Though it occasionally relied on cheap shock tactics instead of real humor, its willingness to go "too far" helped to make it both addictive and unfathomably funny. This is the completely untrue story of seven cartoon characters picked to live in a house, not work together, and have their lives scripted, to find out what happens when people stop being real... and start being... DRAWN TOGETHER!

The Sarah Silverman Program - Season One (2007) Review

The Sarah Silverman Program - Season One (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is impossible to watch this show without some kind of strong reaction. There were times watching this show that I laughed as hard as I have laughed at anything I've seen in recent years. But there were also times when I was simply appalled at how unfunny and in bad taste some parts were, as if the point had ceased being to make us laugh and had become to shock and dismay us. There are many moments when I am simply blown away by the brilliance and originality of Silverman's comic vision and times when I wonder if she has any conception of what is funny and what is not.
This is definitely not a show for everyone and it has nothing to do with how well one's sense of humor is developed. There are simply a lot of absolutely terrible moments in these episodes to go along with some hysterically funny ones. If you can filter out or ignore the bad and merely focus on the good, this is a show you will either partially enjoy or consider a masterpiece. But if you can't filter out the bad or if you obsess over the bad to a degree where you can't appreciate the genuinely funny bits, then you could well consider this to be one of worst shows ever concocted.
I especially loved the initial episode, where Sarah buys some cough syrup that has a decided effect on her perception of reality. That episode -- and especially Sarah's self-absorption that is so extreme that she almost obtains a childlike innocence -- reminds me very much of the balance that Paul Reubens was able to strike in PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE. Unfortunately, she is not able to maintain that balance through the rest of the series. I did not enjoy any subsequent episode as much as that one, though the one in which she thought she was dying of AIDS came close. Here is a bit that presents the show at its best. Sarah is feeling a bit down so she decides to go get an AIDS test so that she'll feel better when it comes up negative. As part of the exam she is asked to respond to a questionnaire that tracks her lifestyle choices. Here is a bit of that dialogue:
Nurs: Did you ever have a blood transfusion in the 80s?
Sarah: Yeah.
Nurse: (alarmed) You did? You had a transfusion in the 80s?
Sarah: (bemused) Oh! Ha! No--I thought you said in Haiti.
Nurse: (even more alarmed) How long were you in Haiti?
Sarah: Oh that's hard to say; I was doing a lot of heroin at the time.
On the other hand, there are the truly awful moments, most of which cannot be repeated on a board like this. It wasn't merely that they were off color or excessive or extreme. They were simply not funny. And being extreme simply for the sake of being extreme is not funny. Andy Kaufman could pull that off, but few others.
So, this is a show that can only receive a limited recommendation. More perhaps than any other comedian today, Sarah Silverman invites extreme reactions. There have been many moments where I have found her to be as funny as anyone alive and times when I can't tolerate her. I suspect that this is pretty much what you will always get with her. But I will say this: there isn't anyone else out there quite like her.

Sarah Silverman says what's on her mind. And no one else's. In this first season of the critically acclaimed The Sarah Silverman Program, Sarah gets hepped up on cough syrup, takes in a homeless man and poops her pants. With her unique perspective on life and her ability to turn just about everything into a song, find out why Sarah Silverman is an American treasure. An offensive, filthy-mouthed treasure.

Chappelle's Show - Season 1 Uncensored (2003) Review

Chappelle's Show - Season 1 Uncensored (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had caught snippets of Chappelle's Show here and there before, but I had never made a point of actually sitting down and watching a complete episode. Then a friend of mine told me about a hilarious skit featuring Dave Chappelle as a black white supremacist (he is blind and doesn't know he is actually a black man); if it was only half as funny as she said it was, I knew I had to see it for myself, so I soon bought myself a copy of Chappelle's Show Season One. Not only is the skit in question hilarious, it basically defines the type of humor Dave Chappelle brings to the comedy scene. I don't think the television viewing audience has ever seen anything like this before - certainly not to the extremes that Dave Chappelle takes it. When he jokes about the fact the show has not been cancelled yet, it actually rings with a bit of truth. Very few comedians could get away with this type of over-the-top humor.
To say that this is mature humor is something of an understatement. Adult language abounds, and all the bleeps you heard on television are now removed - thus, the Uncensored! tagline. You'll find a lot of jokes centered on human anatomy - especially female anatomy. Far beyond everything else, though, is a relentless comedic skewering of racism. Some would probably consider this a racist show, actually - the "n word" is used in abundance, and stereotypes of blacks, Asians, whites, and other races are exploited shamelessly. The whole point of the race-based comedy, though, is to show just how extreme and ridiculous racist thinking and behavior really is. Some people won't "get it," of course, and they will probably think Chappelle's Show is one of the most offensive things they have ever witnessed - and that's OK. The majority of viewers, I believe, will "get it" and will join me in an extended laugh-fest that lasts throughout all twelve episodes of Season One as well as the bonus materials included in this DVD offering.
Among the gut-bustingly funny stuff you will find in Chappelle's Show Season One are the antics of crack addict Tyrone Biggums (including a visit to a drug awareness day at an elementary school), Chappelle-ized scenes from hit films such as Roots and The Matrix, a news report detailing the profound aftereffects brought about by the paying of reparations for slavery, "Great Moments in Hookup History," a "Real World" episode featuring one really white guy living with five crazy African-Americans, a hard-hitting documentary detailing the racism of famous animal performers, a documentary covering great inner city gang wars of the 1980s, an interracial episode of Trading Spouses, numerous Chappelle-ized television ads, Ask a Black Dude features with comedian Paul Mooney, a hilarious look at the international Player Hater Ball, and of course a lot of crude jokes about drugs and bodily functions. The only bad thing about these episodes is the fact that they are sometimes rather short. Chappelle featured rap and hip-hop musical guests on each show, but those segments are not included on nine of the twelve episodes you get here (and it's only a half-hour show to begin with).
The comedy is a little uneven at times. A few skits never really catch fire and are thus forgettable, but the vast majority of the material here will have you rolling in the aisles. Even the kind of toilet humor that normally isn't that funny will have you in stitches because Chappelle just keeps going to the well so many times that he makes it funny despite itself.
Five of the episodes come with audio commentary by Dave Chappelle and the show's co-creator Neal Brennan (who is white, by the way), as does the extra 29-minute feature of bloopers and deleted scenes. I was actually a little disappointed by the audio commentary; it was informational but not as funny as I had expected. The bloopers and deleted scenes were also less than hilarious - but I realized long ago (thanks to Dick Clarke and Ed McMahon) that bloopers really aren't very funny much of the time. All these extras are just icing on the cake, though, as the twelve episodes of the show more than make this Season One collection worth the money. Heck, it's worth it for just the blind, black white supremacist feature by itself.

South Park - Imaginationland Review

South Park - Imaginationland
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SOUTH PARK has only been seen on the big screen once. Despite topically relevant humor and episodes that are large in scope, the series rarely even does two-part shows. In October 2007, the series gave fans the closest thing they are probably ever going to get to another SOUTH PARK movie with the three-part series originally titles as "Kyle Sucks Cartman's Balls" but is now being marketed as the "Imaginationland" trilogy.
This three-part series begins with Cartman and most of the rest of the crew hunting in the forest for a leprechaun. Cartman swears he saw a leprechaun and vows to catch it. Kyle doesn't believe him and signed a note that if a leprechaun actually existed, he would suck Cartman's balls. Sure enough a leprechaun is spotted and Cartman's crew attempts to capture it. However, leprechauns have magic powers and it escapes. It tells the boys that it was on a mission to warn them about a terrorist attack. Well, one thing lead to another and Stan, Kyle, Butters, Kenny, and Jimmy find themselves on a floating balloon with a strange man who takes them to Imaginationland. The boys are asked what the leprechaun told them, but just as they are about to speak, Imaginationland is attack by terrorists. The boys escape on a talking dragon, but Butters is left behind. They waken in the morning and when talking to each other realize they all had the same dream. Not only that, but Butters is missing. It's then that the boys realize that it couldn't have all just been a dream and that terrorists have actually attacked our imagination. What follows is an epic tale as the terrorist blow apart the wall that separates the good part of Imaginationland from the bad part. A massive war begins, the government captures Stan and Kyle to find out why Butters was talking about them, and Cartman sues to force Kyle to suck his balls.
The story is massive in scope and one of the more entertaining things to do is watch the scenes that take place in Imaginationland and try to spot the different characters. South Park does a lot of parodies and is often satirical so the show can get away with a lot more than many others. The show includes characters from television, films, comic books, and even advertising. I did notice that there were no Disney characters, Warner Brothers (such as Bugs Bunny), DC (Superman, Batman, etc.) or Marvel (X-Men, Spider-man, etc.) that I could see. I guess even Matt Stone and Trey Parker have certain legal boundaries that even they can't cross. Overall, the Imaginationland story-arc is one of the best SOUTH PARK episodes in the past three seasons.
The DVD includes a commentary with Matt and Trey. If you have any of the recent season releases of SOUTH PARK or the special episode DVDs, you're familiar with the mini-commentaries that the duo usually provides. With most episodes they talk for 3-8 minutes and that's it. On SOUTH PARK IMAGINATIONLAND the duo talks for almost forty minutes. The DVD also includes a few storyboards as well as two extra episodes "Woodland Critter Christmas" from season eight and "Manbearpig" from season ten. In the Imaginationland story, the Woodland Critters return to torture creatures in Imaginationland and Manbearpig escapes through a portal into the "real" world, causing Al Gore to go hysterical.
Overall, if you're a casual fan of SOUTH PARK or if you really, really, really liked the story arc, you may want to pick up IMAGINATIONLAND. If not, I'd wait until the Season 11 SOUTH PARK DVD set is released.

Ignoring the impending apocalypse, Cartman goes all the way to the Supreme Court to get justice for his case of dry balls.
