(More customer reviews)Power Rangers Mystic Force. What can I say about it? It's certainly not the best Season of Power Rangers, however, it isn't the worst either.
Younger children will enjoy this series movie I think. It's kind of gives a "Harry Potter" feeling, with the Rangers' magic wands and capes. Volume 1 is the best of the Mystic Force releases. The first two episodes show how the Rangers become the Mystic Force. The only thing I found to complain about were the lack of episodes. This DVD only has 3 Mystic Force episodes. However, they do include a bonus episode from Power Rangers SPD intitled History, which shows the team-up between the SPD Rangers and Dino Rangers from Power Rangers Dino Thunder.

(More customer reviews)If you were pleased with the DVD releases of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, you should be equally pleased with the She-Ra Princess of Power DVD box sets. She-Ra Princess of Power Season One, Vol. 1 features the first thirty two episodes of the series. This is the first season set release for She-Ra, as the prior She-Ra release was a ten episode best of release.
It's clear from the packaging and beyond that Ink & Paint put as much effort into the She-Ra release as they did the He-Man series. The box design is similar and similar to the He-Man sets there is artwork on the spine of the box that will one day form a complete picture. The She-Ra DVD box set also includes two collectible 4X6 art cards and a plethora of bonus material.
The DVD set begins with the five part episode The Secret of the Sword. If you purchased The Best of She-Ra this past summer, these are the same episodes that were featured on that set. For those who don't recall, The Secret of the Sword is the animated movie that introduces the She-Ra character. Prince Adam makes a trip to Eternia and before all is said and done, Adora finds her power as She-Ra when she raises the sword aloft, she fights being brainwashed by the Horde, and much more. Basically, this is the movie that introduced the She-Ra character and tells her background. Adora is the twin sister that He-Man never knew about. Both have alter ego's, his is He-Man, hers is She-Ra.
The episode quality is really good. She-Ra is a show that appealed to both boys and girls. Although She-Ra was a female heroine, many of the shows episodes featured strong storylines by supporting characters. One character who enjoyed a lot of screen time was Bo. In the episode, "The Red Knight," Bo feels his manhood was challenged when the mysterious Red Knight beats him in a series of physical events. Feeling down, Bo leaves home and sets out for the Whispering Woods along. In another episode, two young boys tell Bo that their father's axe was stolen, when actually they lost it. Bo goes off to retrieve the axe and finds danger. She-Ra rescues him.
She-Ra has many friends including Castaspella, Madame Razz, Glimmer, and Cowell. Light Hope and Madame Razz are among the few who know share the secret that Adora is She-Ra.
Similar to the He-Man series, there is a moral or lesson at the end of the episode which is explained for viewers. She-Ra is an enjoyable series, and it's good to see the show on DVD after waiting for so long.

Jim Henson's The Storyteller ~ The Complete Collection (1987) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm amazed that this series has gotten so little attention. This is Jim Henson and crew at their best, making fun of the lines between fantasy and reality, costume and puppetry, and new storytelling and old stories.
All of these short pieces were unfamiliar to me, at least in part. 'Sapsorrow' turned out to contain a story I knew, or thought I did. Part of the reason these fairy tales were unfamiliar was their authenticity. These stories were originally meant for adults. They had hard, dark edges, and were not the vapid Disneyfied versions that most people know.
Lots of kids will like these stories as much as adults do, but this may be too much for younger children. This isn't Sesame Street - it's one of the dark alleys off to the side.
The narrator is one of the unexpected treats on this disk. He opens and closes each short story, talking to his dog on a fire-lit night. The narration is a treat, too. It has a wonderful rolling cadence, too musical for regular speech but too prosaic to be a chant. It may give you some idea what the old epic poems must have sounded like in their original settings.
This is for anyone who likes fantasy, who likes a rich visual experience. You just have to see it for yourself - written words can't begin to give the experience you'll find in this collection.

(More customer reviews)"The Adventures of Superman - The Complete Second Season" is an essential for fans of the original series, it's star, the unforgettable George Reeves, and anyone who would enjoy seeing a series 'at the top of it's game', when it was a genuine national phenomena!
The back story is truly amazing; the first season, filmed in 1951, had taken two full years to finally reach the entire country (television, at that time, was still in it's infancy, and just beginning to spread throughout the nation, as the FCC issued licenses for new stations, from coast to coast). "The Adventures of Superman", syndicated and sponsored by Kellogg's, was a fresh, exciting series that many of the new stations picked up to help promote themselves, and sell televisions...and the series began an astonishing climb to a level of popularity that no one involved had ever anticipated.
Certainly, none of the cast was prepared for what happened; in the two-year hiatus, Phyllis Coates, the 'Lois Lane' of the first season, assuming the series was finished, took on other acting assignments, and was no longer available when the call went out for the second season to be filmed (her role was filled by the 'Lois Lane' of the 40s movie serials, Noel Neill, 33, who saw the role toned down considerably from the aggressive, feisty newspaperwoman of the first season). Jack Larson, 20, who had felt misgivings about the role of Jimmy Olsen from the beginning (only agreeing to the part when his agent joked that "nobody will ever see it, anyway") discovered himself typecast in the role, and his privacy lost...a situation even more acute for the series' star, George Reeves, now 39. During the series' hiatus, he had gotten a juicy supporting role in the blockbuster, "From Here to Eternity", only to see the role edited down to an unbilled cameo, as the producers feared a film featuring 'Superman' would lose it's impact as a 'serious' film. Reeves would only appear in three feature films during the series' entire run, and one film, afterward, all in supporting roles...with no film work at all, the last three years of his life...which provided 'motive' that his 1959 death was suicide (despite evidence of foul play).
Knowing what the future held for Reeves makes the second season of AOS a bittersweet experience, as he is so wonderful in the role! Still youthfully handsome, he projects even more confidence and ease than he had in the first season, and was far more 'kid friendly', as his fight scenes were toned down (as was all the violence, as Kellogg's responded to parents' concerns). With the national Superman 'craze' in full swing, he took special pains to remind children that "only Superman can fly", and his portrayal of the Man of Steel reflected his increasing sense of responsibility of being a good role model to a generation of children who adored him.
If the series lacked it's earlier grittiness, the second season offered spectacular compensations, especially in "Panic In the Sky", the most famous and popular episode of the entire series. As a huge asteroid plunges toward Earth, Superman launches himself into space, in a last-ditch effort to save the planet. Slamming into the gigantic rock head-on, all he can accomplish is to change it's course, temporarily...while being knocked into a state of amnesia by the encounter! With Earth's destruction imminent, can Superman regain his memory in time...AND find a way to stop it? Despite some primitive FX, the episode is STILL riveting, after a half-century!
This is DEFINITELY a 'Must-Have' collection!

Your entire family will enjoy this NBC sitcom because it is wholesome, realistic, entertaining, and very funny!

Katie the Crook (10/29/1981)
In the pilot, youngest daughter Sam comes home with a black eye, and Nell gives her a few lessons on how to fight. Julie and a friend are studying where babies come from, and as the Chief comes home, he walks into the kitchen to find the two kissing. Simpson arrives at the house with Katie, who was picked up for stealing, but was not arrested. Katie has been acting out since the death of her mom.
A Good Man is Hard to Find (11/5/1981)
Nell and Angie go to a bar to pick up men. However, Nell gets sad that she isn't sought after. She then goes home and the Chief decides to fix her up with one of his officers. What he doesn't know is that the officer is just doing the Chief a favor so he can get a better promotion. The Chief throws the man out and tells Nell what happened when she comes out all dolled up. Nell realizes he wasn't interested in her because she is overweight.
The Second Time Around (11/12/1981)
A woman hits the Chief's police car, because her contact lens came out . When she meets the Chief to tell him how sorry she was for smashing into his car, she realizes the two went to school together. The two hit it off, and begin seeing each other, and Samantha is sad because she doesn't want a step-mother. In the end, when Marion tries to seduce with the Chief, he rushes out of her apartment.
Mom's Birthday (11/19/1981)
A woman with a gift for Margaret on her birthday shows up. When the Chief comes home, he is sad because it's Margaret's birthday. He decides to take the family out to dinner. Nell decides to get out the family's home movies with the Chief objecting after first but then relenting.
Do or Diet (11/26/1981)
Nell decides to hold her PORKO'S weight-loss meeting at the house, and when she gets on the scale she gets upset that she gained two pounds. When the Chief comes home he is disgraced by the group and has a bad case of indigestion, forcing him to stay on vegetables for the next three weeks. Once Nell and the Chief begin their diet, the Chief insists on sampling her lasagna, and then they go on an eating binge.
A Man in Nell's Room (12/3/1981)
When the Chief finds a man in Nell's room, he tells her he doesn't want her fooling around with guys under his roof. Nell decides to quit, and moves in with Angie for one night. In the end, Nell gets tired of Angie and decides to come home, and is warmly greeted by the family.
Your Prisoner is Dead (12/10/1981)
The Chief witnesses a robber hold up a pharmacy. When the robber turns his gun on him, the chief shoots him in self-defense. However, when he finds out that his prisoner has died, he thinks seriously of retiring. Nell helps him get over his insecurity and go back to work.
Julie's Rejection (12/17/1981)
Julie wants to join Katie's club, and gets help from Nell and Katie on how to be cook. When she shows up to Katie's group of friends, she is nervous and screws up when they ask her questions about past experiences.
Julie's First Love (1/7/1982)
Julie goes off to the arcade after having no luck at finding a date to the Junior prom. She meets a worker there who is into computers named Arnold and she asks him to the prom which he accepts. However, the Chief is mad that Julie returns home late and grounds her, not wanting to hear her side of the story.
Nell's Ex (1/14/1982)
Nell's finds out that her ex-husband Tony is in town and wants to see her. At the house, he tells her that he is going to be on the Merv Griffith show and needs $1,000. Nell agrees to give him the money and lies to the Chief, telling him she needs $500 for her Aunt. The Chief gives her the money, even if he knows that Tony is going to blow it and not get his big break.
Katie the Cheat (1/21/1982)
The Chief is counting on Katie to do real good on her final exam, but she gets Julie to take it for her. The family is shocked to hear what has happened, when she declines the money she receives for her college education.
The Emergency (2/4/1982)
Katie comes home with a bad stomach pain and Nell rushes her to the hospital room. Once there, she meets a pushy receptionist and seeks a doctor to see Katie. The doctor tells Nell that Katie was using an IUD (Inter-Uterinary Device) as a form of birth control and will be okay. She is shocked to hear the news and so is the Chief. The Chief leaves the hospital disgusted, but returns and goes to see Katie.
Nell Goes Home (2/11/1982)
As the Chief is getting ready to leave for an assignment in New York, Samantha is mad that she can't go fishing with a male friend. After he leaves, Nell gets a call from her mother telling her that her father had a heart attack. Nell takes Samantha back home to Alabama to visit her family. At her house, Nell is told by her mother that her father doesn't want to see her. However, Samantha is sad for the way she treated the Chief because he wouldn't let her go fishing. Note: Nel's mom is played by Hilda Haynes who is not the same actress who played her mom in subsequent seasons (Rosetta LeNoire).
Samantha Steals a Squad Car (2/18/1982)
As the Chief is preparing a speech at an awards banquet, Nell sits on his cap, which ticks him off. Meanwhile, Samantha comes home, complaining that a girl called her a mean name, but Nell and the Chief are too busy arguing. To get their attention, Sam yells a bigoted term to Nell. This gets the Chief's who goes on a rampage. Sam then locks herself in the bathroom and escapes through the bathroom window, steals her fathers squad car, and takes off to the police station.
Grandma Fools Around (2/25/1982)
The family gets ready for Grandma and Grandpa's 55th anniversary at the house. Meanwhile, back at their house, Grandma and Grandpa are reminiscing over old photos and love letters that Grandpa sent her during World War 2. When Grandpa reads one of them, he finds out it wasn't his, and he threatens to leave Grandma and wants a divorce. Of course Nell helps smooth things over with one of her famous talks.
Hot Muffins (3/11/1982)
Katie's band is a big success in Glenlawn as they perform at amateur night. A big producer spots the group, and offers them a job. Katie decides at first she wants to go. However, Nell lets her see deep inside that all she wants to be is a star, and she finally decides to stay behind with her family, as her group goes off to see if they can make a success with their career.
Sam's Affair (3/18/1982)
Samantha and her friend Scottie from her baseball team decide to sit on the couch and watch some television. As they are intimidated by a love story, they talk about kissing, and they decide to try it. Finally Nell decides to teach Sam the facts of life because of some misinformation that her father told her (kissing will get her pregnant).
The Robbery (3/25/1982)
The Kaniskys come home to find burglars in their home. And when Nell returns she tricks the burglars by saying there are jewels in the closet. When the reporter shows up, Nell and the girls try to make the chief look good, even though he was tied up by the robbers.
An Unmarried Couple (4/1/1982)
Katie's friend Valerie shows up at the house, unwed, pregnant, and due any day. She tells Katie that her boyfriend Jonathan had a fight with her and the two broke up and she has nowhere to go. Valerie is welcome to stay with the family, however, once the Chief finds out she is pregnant and split with her boyfriend, he does not tolerate this.
I am so excited that "Gimme A Break" will finally find a home on DVD. This is a classic 80's sitcom. So, sit back and relax and give yourself a break to watch this excellent Nell Carter sitcom!

Michael Palin's Around the World in 80 Days (1990) Review

(More customer reviews)One would think that trying to best a fictional record from the 1870s would be an easy task these days, even if one has to abide by the same modes of travel such as trains and boats, but we discover along with Palin that it isn't as easy at it would seem. We also discover the joys of simple travel, simple pleasures, everyday people from faraway lands, and such important lessons as how to remove a snake's gall bladder and - my favorite bit - the manly way to iron laundry. Yes, on top of being provided with a fascinating window to other cultures, we are awarded the constant presence of the wittiest, most charming and most informative travel guide ever to grace a TV screen. I love all of Palin's travel adventures but this - his first - is still in my book, the very best. I've heard that the DVD extras on this only include an interview with Palin, but that shouldn't dissuade anyone from buying this magnificent 7-part series.

Walt Disney Treasures: Zorro - The Complete Second Season Review

(More customer reviews)The Complete Second Season is the definitive version that Disney Zorro fans have waited years for. Covering the 39 episodes that comprise season #2 (1958-1959), this limited edition (and numbered) 6-disc set of 30,000 includes a Certificate of Authenticity, a collectible pin (very handsome showing a silver sword with a shadow of Zorro & his horse superimposed on top), as well as a black-and-white photo postcard showing Guy Williams in his Zorro costume. A booklet outlining the contents of the set can also be found here. The set comes handsomely encased in a black metal tin, fitting of this B&W series where the hero wears an all-black costume.
A 3:29 intro by Leonard Maltin introduces the episodes and gives a brief overview of the series and these particular episodes along with the extras on these discs. The remastering is evident on these episodes. The picture is clear and so is the sound; naturally, with the way it was originally recording, a digital surround experience is not possible, but the Dolby Digital recording is crisp, clear, and the score sounds better than it has in years. And no...there are no colorized versions here. Just the genuine black and white originals.
Besides the 39 episodes (starting with "Welcome to Monterey", original air date of 10/9/1958 and finishing with #39 "Finders Keepers", original air date of 6/2/1959), there is a 6th disc of bonus material. Here you will find 2 hour long episodes:
1. "Zorro: The Postponed Wedding," original air date of 1/1/1961, from Walt's anthology TV series "Walt Disney Presents." Clocking in at 49:04, this episode features Annette Funicello, who is beginning to mature into a very pretty young lady.
2. "Zorro: Auld Acquaintance," original air date of 4/2/1961, from Walt's anthology TV series "Walt Disney Presents." Starring Ricardo Montalban & Ross Martin ("Wild Wild West") this episode is 49:09 long.
There is also a featurette entitled, "Behind The Mask" (7:52) which is a short look at Zorro's leading man, Guy Williams. Also known as Professor Robinson on "Lost In Space," Williams is often regarded as the quintessential Zorro. Well-liked by his costars (Suzanne Lloyd is quoted here as saying Williams was "one of the most charming professional men I ever had the pleasure of working with"), he began as a model and then became a contract player at Universal. An injury sidelined him and caused him to take up fencing. A call to audition for Disney's Zorro was a fortuitous break for the actor, and catapulted him into stardom. Zorro's stunt double, Buddy Van Horn is also interviewed here, along with Williams' son, Guy Williams, Jr., who obviously has many fond memories of his father and this particular role. Interestingly enough, it is recounted that most action scenes were shot on Fridays so that any injuries would have the entire weekend to heal! Rare color movies of Williams performing at Disneyland as Zorro are shown here; Van Horn recalls them staying at the Disneyland Hotel and taking advantage of the carte blanche they had at the Hotel. Author Antoinette Lane, Guy Williams: The Man Behind the Mask, is also interviewed about Williams, recounting what a role model he was, playing a father figure in "Lost in Space" and a protector in "Zorro."
Finally take a trip to the Walt Disney archives in Burbank on the studio lot (10:55). Leonard Maltin and Guy Williams, Jr. display original costumes and sword from the show, calling particular attention to the lavish detail (genuine silver thread, exquisite embroidery, and heavy wool) that is evident in these pieces made by Western Costume. Two costumes are also shown with the famous "Z" emblazoned on them, including one for Henry Calvin's oafish and comedic Sergeant Garcia. Next up a generous sampling of the more than 500 licensed items that were sold to promote the Disney series, including lunch boxes, rings, child costumes, and even roller skates!
This fantastic set is a must-have for Disney fans both new and old alike. Quality entertainment presented in a quality package.

William Katt played Ralph Hinkley an ordinary guy who is left a gift from aliens from outer space-a suit that gives its wearer the ability to fly, super strength, invisibility and much more. Suddenly, he had all these super powers but lost the owner's manual to tell him how to use it correctly. Ralph ends up flying into walls and generally having as many mishaps as a superhero could possibly have. Befriended by FBI agent Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) Hinkley partners with him and decides to fight for good. These first eight episodes (including the two hour pilot ) made up the first season of the series. The two hour pilot soars with nice comedic touches by Katt, Connie Selleca and the perfect straight man in Culp. In fact, Culp plays it so seriously that it comes off almost as a parody of a government agent.
With an exceptionally good transfer, "The Greatest American Hero" looks almost as if it was invulnerable to the ravages of time. The transfers look very nice with solid blacks and color reproduction. Considering the show is twenty five years old, there are few of the flaws that one might expect. The image is occasionally soft but and has some minor analog imperfections (such as dust, dirt particularly during the effects shots) on the whole, Anchor Bay has done a meticulous job in transferring this series to DVD. The sound while limited by the technology of the time (it was broadcast in mono) has good presence with the dialogue very clear. Some minor background hiss crops up from time to time. Although the box says this is in stereo it sounds like mono to me.
We get a pilot for a spin off entitled "The Greatest American Heroine". While only one episode was shot, what we have is quite good and promising. Sadly, no network picked up the spin-off so, until recently, it has sat on the shelf. In the spin off Hinkley hands off the suit to a young woman and she takes up where he left off. We also get interviews with stars William Katt, Robert Culp, Connie Selleca and writer/producer/creator Stephen J. Cannell. Culp provides some interesting tidbits in his interview. For example, the reason Bill Maxwell comes across so intense and humorless is because Culp decided to play the role that way. He figured that there with others playing for laughs, presenting his character as serious would provide an anchor to reality and prevent the show from becoming too tongue-in-cheek. With over an hour of interviews, this portion of the set is extremely generous. No commentary tracks from anyone but, really, the interviews do make up for that. Hopefully in future sets we can have commentary tracks on key episodes by the actors and Cannell.

I have reviewed all the others, too.
The BBC productions are all far better quality than Dinosaur Planet. But Dinosaur Planet has longer stories, and the dinos are given names and more personality, which appeals to kids.
Of the BBC productions, Chased by Dinosaurs is the best. They are all exceptional. You'd think somebody managed to go back in time and shoot film of real dinosaurs. In fact, that is the plot of Chased by Dinosaurs. The host, Nigel Marvin, is something of a "dinosaur hunter", ala the Crocodile Hunter series. He goes back in time and interacts with marvelous dinosaurs in 3 long episodes. The animation is brilliant! In one moment, Nigel captures a small bird-like dinosaur. In another, a T-Rex nearly back into Nigel, who is hiding in the bushes. The animation is just mind-blowing.
This is absolutely my son's favorite. He's old enough to know that Nigel Marvin didn't really go back in time. But he's young enough to be absolutely delighted by the possibility.

This is a very interesting and well done animated series take on Spider-man, my only personal issues with it were already mentioned by another reviewer who noted the mishandling of the character Eddie Brock. Previously he had been in competition with Peter Parker to get photo's of Spider-man which lead to his eventual hatred of the two when he continually failed. Here they try to make him a friend to Peter and rather than have them share the commonality of being young photographers they make him a lab assistant. In the end this first season works well overall though and should please any spidey fans.

While several episodes were only available on DVD in recent years through a pricey enrollment club, this represents the first time the ENTIRE first season of this landmark TV Western icon has been available in ANY format!
Starring Robert Conrad as Agent James T. West, along with the late and deeply lamented, Ross Martin, who portrayed his partner, Artemis Gordon, master of disguise and invention, the series ran on CBS from 1965-1969.
The series focused on their adventures as the country's first secret service agents, working for President Ulysses S. Grant, to thwart all manner of evil doers who directed their villainy at individuals and/or the nation. Mixing espionage, thrilling adventure, western cliff-hanger suspense and high-tech, sci-fi gadgetry the likes of which had never been seen on network TV, the series propelled the actors into international stardom. On the series, West and Gordon traveled in style on a personal train equipped with the amazing gear they used each week to save the day and/or world (the interior of which was used in the epic Gunsmoke episode, "Death Train.")
(Note: Martin, who suffered a heart attack during the first season, was replaced during the last season by the network because they were concerned about his health, which probably resulted in the series' demise. Actor Charles Aidman joined the cast, portraying Jeremy Pike, also a master of disguise, who was supposedly West's former partner. Two later made-for-TV movies, The Wild, Wild West Revisited in 1979, and More Wild, Wild West in 1980, reunited Conrad and Martin.)
The series (set in 1868 primarily in or around San Francisco) continues to be a source of fevered worldwide fan devotion. Like The Avengers, which also aired in the 1960s, The Wild, Wild West was made into a simply awful "blockbuster" big-screen feature film in the 1990s, which failed in every way to capture the quality, fun, adventure, action and entertainment of the original, beloved series.
The brilliant actor, the late Michael Dunn, guest starred in 10 episodes during the show's run (several considered the best in the series) as the diabolical nemesis of West and Gordon, Dr. Miguelito Loveless, who suffered from delusions of grandeur. (At 3 feet-10-inches tall, Dunn suffered from chondrodystroyphy, which eventually took his life. He was also a child prodigy with an IQ of 178 and became a concert pianist at age 15, and was a remarkable singer.)
Dr. Loveless was ably assisted by the devoted Voltaire, portrayed by Richard Kiel (best known for his portrayal of the evil "Jaws" in the James Bond films, "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Moonraker"), who is a towering 7-feet-two-inches tall! The juxtaposition of the two actors increased the pathos that Dunn used in his unforgettable performances expressing the doctor's jealousy and hatred of West for his "perfect body" and society in general for its embrace of physical beauty and harsh rejection of those who do not meet that superficial, rigid criteria.
Throughout the series, Conrad insisted on performing all of his own stunts (which were minion) and viewed himself as a tough-guy, developing a devoted stunt crew "family." Dunn, who was no slouch himself, also performed his stunts at the urging of Conrad, despite network fears that both actors would be seriously injured (Conrad did suffer numerous injuries and Dunn injured an ankle.)
As of this writing, the studio had not announced what, if any, special features would be included in the boxed set. The first season (the only one in black and white) had 28 episodes: The Night of the Inferno; The Night of the Deadly Bed; The Night the Wizard Shook the Earth (introducing Dr. Loveless); The Night of Sudden Death; Night of the Casual Killer (the only episode in the entire series to omit "The" before "Night of" in a title); The Night of a Thousand Eyes; The Night of the Glowing Corpse; The Night of the Dancing Death; The Night of the Double-Edged Knife; The Night that Terror Stalked the Town (also featuring Dr. Loveless); The Night of the Red-Eyed Madmen; The Night of the Human Trigger; The Night of the Torture Chamber; The Night of the Howling Light; The Night of the Fatal Trap; The Night of the Steel Assassin; The Night the Dragon Screamed; The Night of the Grand Emir; The Night of the Flaming Ghost; The Night of the Whirring Death (third Dr. Loveless episode); The Night of the Puppeteer; The Night of the Bars of Hell; The Night of the Two-Legged Buffalo; The Night of the Druid's Blood; The Night of the Freebooters; The Night of the Burning Diamond; The Night of the Murderous Spring (Dr. Loveless' final appearance in Season 1); and The Night of the Sudden Plague.

(More customer reviews)There sure are a lot of mean-spirited know-nothings out there, judging from the semiliterate 1-star reviews this puppy is racking up. It's almost as if they liked the craptacular bootleg versions of this that were floating around before...
Look. This isn't absolutely perfect. The dub version has some pretty distracting audio problems, but they're transitory, and I am 99% certain it was the best they could do at the price-point they wanted to be able to offer. Could they have cleaned up the audio? I'm not sure, but I bet if they did the whiners would be whining that the set cost $75.00.
People are complaining about how it sometimes drops into subtitled Japanese--this is so that you can watch THE WHOLE EPISODE, for the first time ever in the US. The US version was previously heavily edited for time. And this simply illustrates my point, to wit:
This is a Japanese series. The actors are Japanese. The director was Japanese. The scripts were in Japanese. The expensive audio and video remastering done a couple of years ago for the Tsuburaya region 2 version was done by, you guessed it, Japanese. The English dub is an afterthought. A treat for American fans too young to read. It's a special feature at best. The Japanese audio is crystal clear; the subtitles are legible and accurate. AND THIS SHOW IS MEANT TO BE ENJOYED IN ITS ORIGINAL LANGUAGE (say it with me now, kids): JAPANESE!
And to the nimrod who complained that the DVD wasn't letterboxed: this show was produced for television 40 years ago. The aspect ratio in which it was presented is the aspect ratio on the DVD. There is no letterboxed version. Anywhere. If you still want it letterboxed, ask your mommy or halfway house caregiver for the safety scissors, cut some black construction paper into two long strips, and TAPE IT TO THE SCREEN!
Sorry for the rant, but ignore the doofuses (doofi?) and buy the DVD. If you can read. :o)

Star Trek The Next Generation - The Complete Second Season (1987) Review

(More customer reviews)Season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation improves on the first series by introducing occasionally stronger character based shows and situations. While Tasha Yar is missed, and to a lesser extent Doctor Crusher, we're introduced to 2 new characters. Dr. Pulaski and Guinan. Personally I always enjoyed Pulaski shows, she was one of the only characters that brought a bit of conflict into the programme. There was never enough coming and going of new blood into the Star Trek series (either in front or behind the camera). Guinan (and the new location for her "Ten Forward" - a great setting for comedy/social moments) added more life and mystery into the show. It was a shame she wasn't able to appear in more episodes in the later parts of the series (she does have a cameo role in Star Trek Nemesis).
The episodes themselves were extremely varied. Due to the writer's strike, the season was cut short to 22 episodes rather than the full 26 ending with the appalling "bottle show", 'Shades of Grey' (Plot summary: Riker in a coma and Deanna "looking worried" while Pulaski puts copious L.E.Ds on his forehead). "The Royale" was also truly terrible. There were some storming episodes though, the best being "Q Who." This episode had everything: Q, the introduction of the Borg, Guinan, great special effects and a superb score by Ron Jones. Other great episodes were "Contagion" and "Time Squared"
This box set has everything you could wish for (that's why I'm giving it 5 stars): remastered picture and Dolby Digital sound, one hour of new interviews and documentaries, and some really awesome DVD menus. Although seasons 1 and 2 aren't the best you can't really miss these, they are great foundation episodes with the DVD box sets given the care and attention they deserve.

There is also an audio commentary by the film's director Tom Shadyac. . Shadyac talks about how he ruthlessly edits his movies, always going for a fast pace and big laughs. He points out that originally the studio wanted someone like Chevy Chase or Rick Moranis but once Carrey came on board he drew upon his stand-up persona. Shadyac waxes on about the nature of comedy but with surprisingly little pretension. He also points out the bits that Carrey improvised in this fun, engaging track.
Also included are the theatrical trailer and several vintage T.V. spots.
When Nature Calls only has a theatrical trailer and vintage T.V. spots.
Included in this box set are three episodes from the short lived cartoon series that aired on CBS from 1995 to 1997. "The Reindeer Hunter" sees Ace helping Santa find Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer who has been kidnapped. This episode opens with a surreal set piece involving a snowstorm inside Ace's apartment. This episode wisely adheres to the first movie in terms of tone with a spot-on impersonation of Carrey as Ace. There is also quite a bit of recycling in terms of catch phrases as well (including one of the most famous, "Do NOT go in there!"). In "Natural Born Koalas," Ace and his monkey sidekick investigate ill-tempered koalas that have gone from sedate and cuddly to downright feral. Finally, there is "Dragon Guy" which features Ace dreaming about him and his monkey rescuing a fire-breathing dragon which is as odd as it sounds.

One of the highlights of my DVD collection is the Walker, Texas Ranger series. As a fan of old TV western films that starring Gene Autry, John, Wayne, Clayton Moore, Gary Cooper, and Jimmy Stewart, "Walker" hit the genre dead on without being western.
The fourth season of Walker continues the grand tradition of adventure, and moralistic adventures. Ranger Cordel Walker, Jimmy Trivette, and Assistant DA Alex Cahill tackle crime in the Dallas area. With Walker and his half Cherokee background, you just never know what kind of case (or evidence) comes up. "Ghost Rider" includes a mystic vision that leads Walker to the murderer in an 8 year old cold case. Eastern mysticism comes to the forefront in "Higher Power" as Walker protects a chosen one until his return to the monastery. Alex Cahill faces her father in court in "Redemption", and discovers how thick blood really is. Cordel Walker plays "Christmas Carol" to a group of orphans in a touching episode "A Ranger's Christmas". A hit man comes to town in "The Deadliest Man Alive" and Interpol collaborates with Walker to take him out. The supernatural re-enters Dallas in "Heart of the Dragon" as Walker restores a jade idol to it's proper owner. My favorite (hard to pick) episode this season is probably the two part "Sons of Thunder" that introduces Trent Molloy to the outstanding cast of characters. Episodes like this are the reason why the show lasted 8 seasons, and could probably have lasted beyond Bonanzas' 12 years on the air.
The outstanding artwork that graces the inside of the disc cases of Walker beside his horse just cement the relationship between Walker and classic westerns.
You can't lose with Walker.

The Richard Pryor Show, Vols. 1 & 2 plus Bonus Disc (1977) Review

(More customer reviews)I saw this when it first came on in 1977 when I was 13. Surprising how much I remember these skits. Overall, while it's unique, it's certainly a mixed bag. Like the Smothers brothers, it's quite daring and not surprising that it had trouble with the censors.
"The Richard Pryor Special?" is clearly the best of the lot. Basically, it's Pryor trying to get to his show and meeting strange characters with varied skit ideas along the way. Some really good stuff like the young children's choir (with future soap star Kristoff St. John) and the drunk lover performance with Maya Angelou.
A lot of the ideas that Pryor brings to the fore are unique, but some are just plain strange, such as the "Pet head" with Charles Fleischer (later Roger Rabbit) and "Black Death", a bizzare goth-rocker who kills all of his fans during a concert (this freaked me out and puzzled me in 1977 and still does today). Much of this humor is based on race relations and the subject gets sort of beaten in the ground after a while.
The edited skits makes one wonder why Pryor filmed such profanity-filled routines knowing that they had no chance of airing (there is a particularly foul moment when Pryor curses heavily during the Audience Q&A when there are clearly children visible in the audience). As he has admitted, Pryor had a bad cocaine habit in those days and it shows in some of these monologues.
However, it's also interesting to see the cast of soon-to-be's such as a very young and glamourous pre-"Night Court" Masrha Warfield, Robin Williams, Sandra Bernhard, John Witherspoon, Paul Mooney, and Tim Reid. So overall, you can see in this the direction Black comedy was to take from the 1980s into recent times.
It would be nice if "A Time For Laughter," the 1967 special that featured a young Pryor with Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley, Pigmeat Markham, and Godfrey Cambridge, would also make it to DVD as that was equally as ground-breaking.

Miami Vice: Season Five (1984) Review

(More customer reviews)After five trendsetting seasons of defining the cultural 80's vibe, Vice was beginning to lose its glamour and had overstayed its welcome by becoming as trendy and outmoded as yesterday's pastel-colored fashions. The mood and feel of the show had shifted away from the pop-electric neon atmosphere of earlier seasons to a darker and edgier tone beginning with the two-part conclusion to the season four cliffhanger "Mirror Image" that ended with Sonny, believing that he is his undercover persona Burnett after suffering total amnesia in a boat explosion, races off in a speedboat after killing an undercover detective. Tubbs has tracked him down somewhere near Tampa where he has been living for months as a hit-man for a powerful crime cartel. The premiere episode "Hostile Takeover" begins with Sonny rising through the ranks of the Carrera's by doing the dirty deeds for the feuding family in an effort to take out the rival El Gato organization. Posing as a Jamaican buyer, Tubbs rendezvous with Sonny in an effort to jar his memory but instead Sonny tries to kill Tubbs when it triggers a memory flashback and he remembers that he is a cop. After the initial Burnett story-arc is concluded in "Redemption in Blood," the remaining episodes seemed to turn somewhat anti-climactic. What could have been an interesting season-long theme that that could have potentially played up Sonny-turned-bad masquerading as his undercover alter-ego Burnett is cut short prematurely and it's hard to believe that Sonny isn't indicted for all of his heinous crimes or at the very least is forced to turn in his badge. There's a few moments with Crockett trying to reconcile his relationship with his son Billy in "To Have and To Hold" and coming to terms with his ex, Caroline, and an amusing light-hearted episode with his con-artist cousin Jack played by David Andrews in "Jack of All Trades" and also Tubbs reuniting with Valerie reprised by Pam Grier in the originally unaired "Too Much, Too Late" that help to wrap up loose ends but overall you can sense that the end of the line was coming and the cast and crew were just riding things out. Don Johnson's wardrobe had gone from stylish slacks and casual loafers to denim bluejeans and cowboy boots and his long shaggy blonde locks made him look like he'd just walked off the set of Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. The absence of composer Jan Hammer is painfully felt and Tim Truman's commendable scoring gives it a very different overall feel compared to previous seasons and redundant plotlines involving South American drug smugglers had finally exhausted themselves but the payoff at the end of the final episode "Freefall" is emotional as the ensemble cast members say their goodbyes and go their seperate ways and almost as suddenly as Miami Vice had come to an end, so too had the fashionable decade of the 1980's.
