After watching one episode of this show I was laughing and wanting more. Christina Applegate is amazing in this. Her acting is just so dead on making you laugh at how she exaggerates everything. Jennifer Esposito (who plays Andrea, Samantha's best, and only, friend before her memory loss) is also very funny in this because she basically plays a friend that is always drunk/hung over and very mean.
Samantha's parents in this are just hysterical because they are the typical mom and dad that are still treating their adult daughter like a child and ignoring her opinions and driving her crazy.
Even though a lot of people are saying that the story is not very original, I think that they get a lot of mileage out of it.
If you aren't sure that you will like this show after (at most) 2 episodes watch it on abc.com first and then decide whether you want more.
I am absolutely getting this because it kept me laughing through the whole episode. Even though the episodes are less than 1/2 hour long, I think that it is a good way to keep people begging for more. I nearly lost my mind one week when ABC announced that it would instead air "Dancing With the Stars" for the entire night!

(More customer reviews)In 2009, Bill Lawrence (co-creator of "Scrubs" and "Spin City") and Kevin Biegel thought about a TV series that revolved around single people in their 40's getting back on the dating scene and for Lawrence, said he was also inspired by his wife, actress Christa Miller (who also stars on the show "Cougar town", "Scrubs" and "The Drew Carry Show") and her life when she walked out of the shower, went in front of the mirror and flashed it. By that action alone plus their ideas of featuring a 40-year-old trying to get back into the dating scene, the idea of "Cougar Town" was born.
"Cougar Town" is a sexual comedy sitcom which revolves around Jules Cobb (played by Courteney Cox, "Friends", "Dirt", "Scrubs"), a 40-year-old divorcee who is a single mother raising her teenage son Travis (played by Dan Byrd, "Aliens in America", "Heroes") and also is successfully business owner who owns her own estate business. Having been divorced for eight months, Jules now wants to have fun and enjoy life like a single woman would. No strings tied, no relationships, just to have fun and most of all, having some sexual freedom in her life.
But of course, she's learning quickly that entering in the dating game (and not wanting a relationship) at age 40 is not too easy, especially if your eyes are in younger men.
Fortunately for Jules, she has a support system which includes her next door neighbor and best friend Ellie Torres (played by Christa Miller). Ellie inspires Jules because she is married and has managed to make her marriage work. Ellis is also a voice of reason and a friend she grew up with and since both Jules and Ellie tend to do everything together. Ellie is married to Andy (played by Ian Gomez, "Rita Rocks"), who is a man that loves to eat, tries to be a good husband but also has lazy tendencies as well. Together both Ellie and Andy are new parents and raising a baby and do all they can to keep their marriage happy and functioning.
When Jules is not hanging out with Ellie, she hangs out with her young, promiscuous (and not-so-smart) assistant named Laurie (played by Busy Phillips, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles", "Made of Honor"). Laurie is all about hooking up with men, having fun and despite not being a great assistant, Jules enjoys her company because she is part of the young single scene and hopes her assistant can take her to areas where she can meet younger men.
And because Jules has friendships with both Ellie and Laurie and both woman are quite the opposite from each other, these ladies don't really get along but for Jules sake, they manage to hang out together for their good friend.
Meanwhile, Jules is still close with her ex-husband Bobby (played by Brian Van Holt, "John from Cincinnati", "Threshold") who loves to party, drink beer, play golf, and is a custodian at his son's school and lives on a boat parked in a driveway. Despite Bobby knowing why the reason he got divorced with his wife is because of his issues with infidelity, he does care for his ex-wife and wants to have some sort of relationship with Travis.
Another man in Jules life is a man named Grayson Ellis (played by Josh Hopkins, "Private Practice"), a 40-something bar owner, who lives across the street. Grayson irks Jules because young women constantly come out of his home (and Jules is jealous that its easier for older men to get back into the dating game compared to herself, an older woman). But both because of their initial rivalry, Jules wants to be friends with Grayson and encourage him to join the neighborhood activities within the neighbors living in the cul-de-sac.
Throughout the season, we get to see each of these people who are close to Jules, end up being close friends and are there for each other in times of need.
"Cougar Town - The Complete First Season" features a total of 24 episodes presented on three DVD's.
VIDEO:
"Cougar Town - The Complete First Season" is presented in Widescreen (1:78:1) - Enhance for 16×9 Televisions. For a DVD series, picture quality is good and with a lot of the series shot outdoors and inside with a lot of lighting, the series looks pretty good on DVD. There are compression artifacts as expected from a DVD release but it's not that bad. So far, "Cougar Town - The Complete Series" is a good looking TV series on DVD and fans of the show should be happy with its picture quality on DVD.
It's important to note that Amazon has a listing for a "Cougar Town" Blu-ray release and if that is the case, I can imagine that this series would look fantastic on Blu, especially since the series has a lot of outdoor scenes. Definitely a series that has the potential to show off quite a bit of detail and vibrant colors on HD.
AUDIO & SUBTITLES:
"Cougar Town - The Complete First Season" is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The series is primarily dialogue driven with occasional music and is primarily front and center channel driven. I didn't notice the surround channels being utilized all that much, but for the most part, dialogue is clear and understandable.
Subtitles are presented in English SDH, French and Spanish.

JUDGMENT CALL:
When I first started watching "Cougar Town", I admit that I thought the first initial episodes turned me off. To watch these cougars fawning over high school boys and watching Jules, a 40-year-old woman going to nightclubs where younger people frolic and then hanging out with students and playing beer pong was something I just had no interest in. But I stuck with the series and sure enough, things got better.
As the first few episodes did focus on the "cougar" aspect of older women going after young men, the series began to be more about relationships and friendships. The series literally became much more fun to watch and easily a series that will appeal to both men and women. I enjoyed how the series started to include more storylines that revolve around the people closer to her. For example, her son Travis is constantly being embarrassed by Jules and his father Bobby and friends. But he's a graduating teen who wants to lose his virginity and it's interesting to see how he goes about that and also tries to take advice from his father, his neighbor Andy and Laurie.
Meanwhile, the Torres family are hilarious to watch. Ellie and Andy have a fun relationship, especially how they plan their daily lives with each other. May it be taking care of a child to planning their sexual nights. But of course, as Ellie is a big support for Jules, Andy on the other hand is like the comedic character as he tries to be the confident man who knows about women in front of Travis and also becomes the follower when it comes to him hanging out with Bobby and Grayson.
Meanwhile Grayson is the guy who loves to be with younger women but suddenly finds himself interested in Jules and Bobby, the ex-husband who is loud and obnoxious but also starting to noticed the woman he lost because of his infidelity problem.
And then you have Laurie, your stereotypical blonde floozy who is just a promiscuous woman who just doesn't care. She just loves to have fun and there's no stopping her.
Also, this is role that suits Courteney Cox quite well. As she was an actress that absolutely shined on "Friends", it's great to see her in a sitcom that is just fun to watch and also to see her character evolve. It's quite hilarious and you just have to love the hand "guns" and her "bing" chest bumps. And as I enjoyed watching Courteney Cox, it was also great to see Christa Miller (who I absolutely enjoyed on "The Drew Carey Show" and "Scrubs") in the supportive role as Jules best friend. Both Cox and Miller have great chemistry (as best friends) and to see both sitcom veterans together on one show is pretty awesome!
Another element that I enjoyed with "Cougar Town" is the guest appearances. It was cool to see Sheryl Crow play the wine client Sara who starts dating Grayson and also to see "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow playing the mean doctor and dating Jules ex-husband Bobby. And now, hopefully we will see an appearance by another "Friends" alum on the show... Jennifer Aniston anyone? Or even one of the male "Friends" characters.
Overall, "Cougar Town" is a series with a colorful cast and I found myself enjoying the episodes more when...Read more›

Chappelle's Show - Season 1 Uncensored (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I had caught snippets of Chappelle's Show here and there before, but I had never made a point of actually sitting down and watching a complete episode. Then a friend of mine told me about a hilarious skit featuring Dave Chappelle as a black white supremacist (he is blind and doesn't know he is actually a black man); if it was only half as funny as she said it was, I knew I had to see it for myself, so I soon bought myself a copy of Chappelle's Show Season One. Not only is the skit in question hilarious, it basically defines the type of humor Dave Chappelle brings to the comedy scene. I don't think the television viewing audience has ever seen anything like this before - certainly not to the extremes that Dave Chappelle takes it. When he jokes about the fact the show has not been cancelled yet, it actually rings with a bit of truth. Very few comedians could get away with this type of over-the-top humor.
To say that this is mature humor is something of an understatement. Adult language abounds, and all the bleeps you heard on television are now removed - thus, the Uncensored! tagline. You'll find a lot of jokes centered on human anatomy - especially female anatomy. Far beyond everything else, though, is a relentless comedic skewering of racism. Some would probably consider this a racist show, actually - the "n word" is used in abundance, and stereotypes of blacks, Asians, whites, and other races are exploited shamelessly. The whole point of the race-based comedy, though, is to show just how extreme and ridiculous racist thinking and behavior really is. Some people won't "get it," of course, and they will probably think Chappelle's Show is one of the most offensive things they have ever witnessed - and that's OK. The majority of viewers, I believe, will "get it" and will join me in an extended laugh-fest that lasts throughout all twelve episodes of Season One as well as the bonus materials included in this DVD offering.
Among the gut-bustingly funny stuff you will find in Chappelle's Show Season One are the antics of crack addict Tyrone Biggums (including a visit to a drug awareness day at an elementary school), Chappelle-ized scenes from hit films such as Roots and The Matrix, a news report detailing the profound aftereffects brought about by the paying of reparations for slavery, "Great Moments in Hookup History," a "Real World" episode featuring one really white guy living with five crazy African-Americans, a hard-hitting documentary detailing the racism of famous animal performers, a documentary covering great inner city gang wars of the 1980s, an interracial episode of Trading Spouses, numerous Chappelle-ized television ads, Ask a Black Dude features with comedian Paul Mooney, a hilarious look at the international Player Hater Ball, and of course a lot of crude jokes about drugs and bodily functions. The only bad thing about these episodes is the fact that they are sometimes rather short. Chappelle featured rap and hip-hop musical guests on each show, but those segments are not included on nine of the twelve episodes you get here (and it's only a half-hour show to begin with).
The comedy is a little uneven at times. A few skits never really catch fire and are thus forgettable, but the vast majority of the material here will have you rolling in the aisles. Even the kind of toilet humor that normally isn't that funny will have you in stitches because Chappelle just keeps going to the well so many times that he makes it funny despite itself.
Five of the episodes come with audio commentary by Dave Chappelle and the show's co-creator Neal Brennan (who is white, by the way), as does the extra 29-minute feature of bloopers and deleted scenes. I was actually a little disappointed by the audio commentary; it was informational but not as funny as I had expected. The bloopers and deleted scenes were also less than hilarious - but I realized long ago (thanks to Dick Clarke and Ed McMahon) that bloopers really aren't very funny much of the time. All these extras are just icing on the cake, though, as the twelve episodes of the show more than make this Season One collection worth the money. Heck, it's worth it for just the blind, black white supremacist feature by itself.

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 1 (Bloodlust / Catalina Caper / The Creeping Terror / Skydivers) (1988) Review

(More customer reviews)In case you're new to the world of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (MST3K for short, that what us fans - "Misties" - call it), this is the famous TV show where a silhouette of a man and two robots sitting in theater seats provide running commentary for some of the worst movies ever made. The ninety-minute episodes are also scattered with sketches and songs and amount to some of the smartest, most pop-culture savvy, side-splitting comedy ever made.
This is the first of the four-episode collections of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" offered from Rhino (previously they had only offered them in single DVD editions). It contains an interesting mix of movies: a science-fiction horror flick, a drama about skydivers, a 60s beach comedy, and a thriller on a tropical island. Three of the episodes come from the excellent sixth season, when Mike Nelson was the human host and the wisecracks and comments had become razor sharp and fast and furious. One episode comes from the second season, when the show had a more laid-back, friendly humor when Joel Hodgson was the host. Although this collection skews toward the later seasons, it is still a good general introduction to the show for newcomers, since most of the episodes are terrific. Fans who favor Joel Hodgson's style won't enjoy this as much as the second and third box set, but for most fans the inclusion of "The Skydivers" and "The Creeping Terror" make it a must-own.
Here's what you get:
BLOODLUST! Episode #607. A rip-off of "The Most Dangerous Game," only with young college kids (one of whom is Robert Reed, future Brady Bunch dad!). The four dummies land on a jungle island to go exploring and become trapped by the rich but extremely wishy-washy maniac millionaire who owns the island. Apparently, he enjoys hunting down people to turn them into stuffed trophies. The film isn't really awful, just completely unoriginal and acted with total flatness. Robert Reed never seems more than mildly "cheesed" and "fed up" (to quote Mike and `Bots) with the life-threatening situation. But it's season six, and the show's writers couldn't do any wrong at this point, and the result is the usual hilarious romp.
CATALINA CAPER. Episode #204. This is the only Joel Hodgson episode in the collection, and it's an oddball entry in MST3K history: it's the only time the show took on an overt comedy. True, "Catalina Caper," a teen 60s bikini beach comedy, isn't funny at all, but since it doesn't take itself seriously it becomes a tough target to make fun off. Joel and the `Bots have a good time with the lousy `prat-fall' comic, the awful musical numbers (one featuring Little Richard, waaaay out of his element), skinny Tommy Kirk, and the famous `creepy girl,' but this is a spotty episode and the weakest in this pack. Don't form your opinions of Joel's episodes based on this one.
THE CREEPING TERROR. Episode #606. This is a classic, and one of the worst films the MST3K team ever took on. A big shag carpet (oh, excuse me, I meant `alien') starts eating the citizens of a quiet California town; or at least it gets close enough to them so they can hoist themselves into its mouth. And why is the town so quiet? Because while making the film, someone accidentally kicked the sound equipment into a lake, so the whole movie has almost NO DIRECT SOUND. Yep, we instead have a narrator telling us what the characters are saying, doing, discussing, and so on. You have to see it (or hear it) to believe it! Mike and the `Bots unload on this one, and it's a scream. One of the funniest episodes ever.
THE SKYDIVERS. Episode #609. One of the most beloved of all MST3K episodes. Writer Paul Chaplin said of it: "I don't want to criticize this movie. I'm too fond of the final result for our show...there's never been a better movie for our treatment." I'll drink to that. This drama about the loves and losses of people working at a parachuting school is so weird, so bizarrely scripted, so awfully acted, filled with so many inexplicably wack-o characters, and shot with such stunning ineptitude that it positively amazes. The riffing from the hosts is some of the best, sharpest commentary they ever did. This is the first of three movies MST3K did from director Coleman Francis (who makes Ed Wood look like Orson Welles!). The second one, "Red Zone Cuba" is available on its own DVD. The third, "The Beast of Yucca Flats" isn't out yet, and Rhino should really get this one on a future collection.
All four films are offered in "non-MST3K" versions on the flip side of their discs, which is a nice feature if you really want to see how much the show added to these awful films. "Bloodlust" and "Catalina Caper" are all right - although dull - on their own, but see how long you can sit through the other two without Mike and Robots before you tear your eyes out!
So there you have it, three of the most phenomenally funny episodes of MST3K, plus one of the most unusual. A great package for fans and newcomers alike! (Just watch out for acid in your parachute!)

Trailer Park Boys: The Complete Series Review

(More customer reviews)The Trailer Park Boys...what can I say...if you get the white trash street humor you will love it, if you don't you won't like it. This series is a "mockumentary" that follows hapless knuckleheads and all of their trailer park neighbors through daily life. Their whole life is about scams, smokin' and growin' "dope" (weed), going to jail and fighting with the trailer park supervisor, who is an alcoholic former cop who treats the park as his city. It is hilarious from start to finish. The actors are so good, you actually would believe they are as dumb as they appear in show, but brilliant is more the description. I highly recommend getting the entire series and watch from the first episode to let the characters develop, you will not be disappointed. If you're hesitant to buy the entire series, rent from net flix first and see if you like the trailer park humor. There are also many clips on you tube.

Coupling - The Complete Seasons 1-4 (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)Serious Coupling fans will NOT be disappointed with this attractively packaged box set, which includes all four seasons of the show, as well as hilarious outtakes, interviews with writer Steven Moffat, his wife, producer Sue Vertue (on whose relationship the characters of Steve and Susan are loosely based); an in-depth behind the scenes look at the making of the show; and commentaries on selected episodes with Moffat joined by various members of the cast (you have the option on several episodes to either view the show as it aired or watch it with commentaries taped over it).
I was only expecting four DVDs containing all the shows, and was utterly delighted with the seven discs holding all these extras. The sturdy & attractively designed pastel cases in which each DVD is contained are a cut above lots of cheap DVD packaging out there, which is a nice touch too.
When I first happened upon an episode of Coupling a few years ago courtesy of my local PBS station, I was surprised that such a poorly written and produced show could make it to the airwaves. I failed to realize at the time that Mr. Moffat was a brilliantly funny writer and the plots were supposed to be absurd. At this point I consider myself a hard core fan.
In the fourth series, the writing and overall production of the show feels so polished it bears very little resemble to the slapped-together quality of the first season, for lack of a better term. The character of Jane (aka the 'stupid one') has made the most noticeable transformation in the fourth series. Her 'dumb brunette' act has been toned down to the point of being almost unrecognizable, which works better anyway and is far less grating. I have to wonder if this was Gina Bellman's idea?
The fourth series does suffer a little from the loss of Jeff (Richard Coyle) especially in light of the fact that the character of Oliver (Richard Mylan) was clearly modeled after Jeff Murdoch. Like Jeff, Oliver is an easily-flustered, tongue-tied dork around women. He's likeable enough though, but as a new character I felt he should have had a completely different role to add another dimension to the show. Watching him you only wind up making comparisons to the inimitable Jeff. However the chemistry between goofy Oliver and dim-witted Jane has the effect of balancing their respective exaggerated personality traits out and makes scenes between these two characters especially engrossing.
All of the characters have really grown on me over the seasons, particularly Ben Miles (The Forsyte Saga) an amazing actor who effortlessly manages to make the womanizing character he portrays (Patrick Maitland) loveable and utterly realistic.
I am anxiously awaiting a fifth season!
