Arrested Development - Season Two (2003) Review

Arrested Development - Season Two (2003)

Normally I hate it when people (including myself) write reviews for DVDs that haven't even come out yet. But I'm so excited for the 2nd season of Arrested Development to come out on DVD that I'm going to write one anyway! (Don't worry, I'll come back and update the review once I actually get the DVD.)
This is, in my opinion, the funniest show on television. My favorite thing about this show is how it is a "comedy for smart people." If you like dumb and "easy" humor, then there is probably still some stuff in here that you'll enjoy... BUT if you like clever/witty humor, you'll LOVE this show. The more you watch it, the more jokes you'll understand and the more funny the jokes will be. There are even jokes foreshadowing other jokes several episodes down the road (e.g. Buster's "I never thought I'd miss a hand so much" when looking at his old hand chair in "Amigos"). There's no way you could ever catch everything on your first viewing, and that's why the DVDs are so great.
While the 1st season is incredible, I'd have to say that the 2nd season might be even better. The jokes just keep building (so it's even funnier if you've seen the 1st season). The running storyline of Tobias as an "on call" understudy of the blue man group is great... even at the end of the season (well after that story has ended) you can still see blue smudges on everything in the house. The whole thing about Buster losing his hand is hilarious and contributes greatly to my favorite episode of the season, "Motherboy XXX" (which has one of the funniest endings I've ever seen). I could go on and on: the Veals, Gene Parmesan, Mrs. Featherbottom, GOB's wife, Maeby's job, "Scandalmakers"... it just never stops!
FOX cut back this season's original order of 22 episodes to only 18 (allegedly so they could introduce "American Dad"... but there are even jokes about the cut, like when the Bluth Company's order for homes is cut from 22 to 18). While it's disappointing to think we could have had four more episodes, I'm more than willing to trade those four episodes for a whole 3rd season. This is the funniest show on TV!

In this 5 time Emmy®-winning comedy's hilarious second season, Michael Bluth, once again determined to be free of his dysfunctional family, packs up the car and his son George-Michael and heads for Arizona. But he's soon pulled over by the police who tell him that his father, George Sr., has broken out of prison. Due to the company's shady business deal with Iraq, Michael could face prison time, so he returns home to clear his name even as George Sr. secretly flees to Mexico, Tobias decides to be an understudy for the Blue Man Group, and Lucille begins a torrid affair with her husband's twin brother, Oscar. Arrested Development Season 3 will begin airing this fall on FOX.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force 6 (2008) Review

Aqua Teen Hunger Force 6 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Minor spoiler warning for this review.
Packaging and Menus: This packaging continues with the trend of Williams Street releases in that it's really minimalist. In fact, it might be their most minimalist release. The entire artwork on the DVD cover, the menus, and even the stickers it comes with consist of simple shapes. The DVDs are themselves just solid color. Although simple, it's attractive and very bright. It's simple done right, just like the show itself with it's limited animation.
Video and Audio Quality : Maintains the broadcast quality pretty perfectly. There's only one case of audio inconsistency and that's in a webisode extra. Everything else is fine.
Disc 1 : Houses the 9 episodes that Adult Swim has aired already with commentary for 3 of them.
Episodes : This season opened with a different formula towards the beginning. The Aqua Teens are gone and the spotlight is cast on Carl and the new vampire/landlord Markula. Carl and Markula attempt to rent out the Aqua Teen's home to different tenants that don't stay long and are usually monstrous.
After three episodes of this, The Aqua Teen's return and do their usual routine of experiencing gay zombie gorillas, super-power eye surgery, murderous dummies in love, Canada, religious fruit, low-life genies, parasitic mermaids, radioactive African Americans, multiple scamming infomercials, and the unspeakable horror of furries.
The Carl/Markula Episodes : A fresh break for the viewers and for the writers (who admitted they were burnt out on the main characters). Even though Sirens was weaker than the other two episodes, the Markula highlights made it enjoyable. He was a really great character and he made the run really unique. I'm sad he only got 3 episodes to shine.
Reedickyoulous : After Carl Orders a genital enhancer from an infomercial, his radioactive waste creates zombie animals.
The opening montage was sweet until the sinister turn to a pet cemetery parody. Some thought this episode crossed the line with the killing of animals. I don't think it did. It's Reedickyoulous (see what I did there?) to be so offended by a cat dying when humans have died multiple times previously. Anyway, the toilet humor here with Carl wasn't done especially well for ATHF. An otherwise deliciously absurd episode with a 360 that starts with cat murder and ends with a gay banana bus.
Hoppy Bunny : Because of Carl ordering a flute from an infomercial, Furries take over the Aqua Teen's neighbourhood.
Carl needs to stop ordering things off the telly. Totally wouldn't expect a jab at furries on Aqua Teen. It was a well done jab, though, and that's all that matters. Beginning with the exercise video was a little weak, but it went uphill from there. The massage scene and what follows "I have the power of a thousand suns!" was hilarious, and one of the best moments on ATHF for sure. On a side note : I was amused that they actually had to censor the furry peeing. The FCC is comedy in it's own right.
Laser Lenses : Shake steals Frylocke's contact lenses (apparently the source of his power all along) and all hell breaks loose.
Fantastic episode. Shake being bestowed a great power brings out the quality we all love in him best. I really like the concept that Frylocke's lenses were the source of his power. I also really love the ending, it's just a huge absurd reality collapse where multiple offbeat things are going on all at once. Probably one of the funniest ATHF-style abrupt endings in the show's history.
Dummy Love : Murderous dummies haunt the Aqua Teens and Carl.
I loved the twisted take on the horror cliche that no matter what..the antagonist will keep coming back illogically. I didn't really get the repetition of "KILL..KILL!" from the dummies, but when they started "getting along" while repeating their respective words, I died. I also love how Shake takes advantage of their regenerating abilities. The exact creativity that reminds me why I love this show.
The Marines : Meatwad and Shake find themselves joining the Marines while Frylocke finds himself in Canada.
Only one of 3 episodes this season that I found to be mediocre. To do a Saw parody is so unlike ATHF that it was off putting. The Marine goings on were pretty amusing but the end just petered out into rehash. I'm glad they realized they rehashed from the movie, but It just proves to me that they had the potential to do better. Instead they were lazy and made a joke from it instead of fixing it ala Family Guy.
Bible Fruit : Frylocke invites his new friends from myspace to come to a party and they turn out to be born again christian fruits.
Following a bad episode comes one of the best ATHF episodes yet. Same thing happens in the 4 exclusive episodes, a bit inconsistent this season. Anyway, this episode was grand. The humor is so black and dark and disturbing here and it's executed perfectly with great dialogue and great delivery. "Just pour me a little bit of a full glass of that rum." I might be enjoying this episode more because I know born-again Christians who annoy me terribly. So, the smack down on such people was really satisfying.
Commentary : Tracks on Reedickyoulous, Hoppy Bunny, and The Marines.
Yay! I was happy to see a return to commentary, since volume 5 didn't have any. The commentaries are funny and have lots of variety. The first is a standard cast & Crew thing, the second had 2 gents who helped write this season that were fired (so there was lots of anger towards the big wigs in it), and the third had a military dude who talked about military goings-ons. All three were funny thanks to Dana Snyder and the last gave an interesting spin on an episode I otherwise didn't enjoy very much (the Marines).
Disc 2 : Houses the 4 never before seen episodes and all of the extras.
Gene E : The Aqua Teen's find a Genie while dumpster diving.
I really, really loved the beginning of the episode. Once they all turn invisible, it goes downhill fast. It seems like they just came up with a plot device that would allow them to just animate objects floating as to save money. The first half or so was genius though, particularly Gene E's actions and the idea to open him up and make a serum from his "Genie Gland".
Shake Like Me : When shake is bitten by a radioactive black man he turns black himself.
Woah. I wasn't expecting the exclusive episodes to have an episode THIS good. It's honestly one of the best ATHF episodes ever made. It was so ridiculously and extremely racist but I just couldn't stop laughing. The inclusion of Boxy Brown to spice up the newly african-americanized Shake plot line was great. It's not an endless stream of black jokes, either, it's an equally racist episode towards whites as well. "Your new name is now..Mocha Shake-a Kahn"

American Dad, Vol. 1 (2005) Review

American Dad, Vol. 1 (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From the twisted mind of Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), come the misadventures of a man who will stop at nothing to protect his family and country in the hilarious animated comedy series "American Dad!". Stan Smith is an overprotective and high-strung CIA agent who loves his family and is constantly on the look-out for terrorist activity. In addition to his sympathetic trophy wife Francine, his ultra-liberal daughter Haley and his awkward pre-teen son Steve, the Smith household also includes a freeloading alcoholic space alien named Roger and a perverted German-talking goldfish named Klaus. "American Dad!" is the latest animated sitcom in Fox's Sunday Night lineup. The animated series shares numerous similarities with "Family Guy". "American Dad!" follows a more plot-driven storyline without the heavy use of cutaways and flashbacks. Its cutting-edge humor and outrageous characters are great. The 3-disc box set features such memorable episodes as "Francine's Flashback", "Bullocks to Stan", "A Smith in the Hand" and "Stan of Arabia", and guest voice stars like Carmen Electra, Stephen Root, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Gina Gershon, Matthew Lillard, Molly Shannon, Seth Green and Patrick Stewart.
If you're looking for riotous humor and fine extras, then check out "American Dad!: Volume One". All 13 episodes of the uproariously funny animated series are presented in standard full screen format. Its picture quality is quite good with solid colors. Its 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is crisp and clear. Among special features, the 3-disc set includes in-depth audio commentaries by series writers and voice cast on 12 episodes, "All in the Family" and "Secrets of the Glass Booth" behind-the-scenes featurettes, numerous deleted scenes, animated comparisons and promo spots. Overall, "American Dad! Volume One" scores a "B+".

America's Funniest Home Videos: The Best Of Kids & Animals (1990) Review

America's Funniest Home Videos: The Best Of Kids and Animals (1990)

My kids, 3 and 5, enjoy a lot of the silly clips that they see on AFV and I purchased this set for them. Surprising to me, they have not shown great interest in these dvds. I think one of the issues is that the dvds include MUCH of the dialogue by the hosts, including the AFV theme music as they go to AND come back from commercial breaks. The music and dialogue combined contribute to the majority of time in these videos. In short, if you were to actually calculate the amount of time devoted to clips, it really doesn't amount to a whole lot more than you would catch in a typical episode on TV. I guess I/we expected to see a greater compilation of clips given the longevity of the show.

Family Affair - Season 3 (1966) Review

Family Affair - Season 3 (1966)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season three boasts 28 episodes (the episode not listed in jon sieruga's excellent review/episode guide to this season is the 14th episode of this season, FAMMILY PLAN, where Uncle Bill breaks his leg during a skiing accident) and one truly sensational bonus feature. The special feature is a 30 minute "Family Affair Reunion Special" featuring Kathy Garver (who played Sissy), Sherry Alberoni (who played Sissy's bets friend and upstairs neighbor, Sharon), producer John Stephens and husband and wife writers Austin "Rocky" Kalish and Irma Kalish. The five sit in a semi-circle and chat for 30 minutes, offering lots of fascinating background information about the cast members (Irma remembers Brian Keith as never speaking to her on the set and Stephens remembers his prickly personality; Kathy adored him), the show's legacy and the interesting way the show was shot.
Each season the show got Brian Keith for just 65 days to shoot all his scenes for a season's worth of episodes. (The series was shot this way to give Keith time to keep filming motion pictures.) This meant that all the episodes had to be written before the season began and in most cases the episodes were filmed ahead of time, missing only the scenes that required Brian Keith. Producer Stephens remembers that when they were filmingw ith Keith, they would often work on 4 or 5 episodes in one day! He called its "organized chaos" and credits director Charles Barton, who filmed every episode.
We learn about Anissa Jones not being happy to still be dragging around her Mrs Beasley doll by season four when she was 12 (she was 9 years old in the first season when the twins were suposed to be 6) and both Stephens and Mr Kalish don't have positive things to say about her mother. On a more humorous note, we hear about Sebastian Cabot measuring the length of Keith's trailer to make sure it wasn't larger than his. We also find out that Cabot had broken his wrist during season one (which explains the bandages on his one hand in season one) and it required surgury, which is why John Williams replaced him in a handful of episodes that season. We also find out that the 3-part episode LOST IN SPAIN was totally filmed on the network's backlot, using sets from the TV series "From Rome With Love."
This is a wonderful, chatty and informative feature. Its too bad that no one could convince Johnny Whittaker ("Jody") to participate. It would be great to get a few commentary tracks with him and Garver in the fourth or fifth season.
This show is thought of as a sitcom, but its really much more of a drama-dy. You better have some tissues near when watching "Christmas Came A Little Early" where Buffy befriends a young homebound classmate (played by BRADY BUNCH's Eve Plumb) who has leukemia. And you have to admire the restraint and power of some of the more dramatic episodes of this season, especially "The Latch Key Kid" where Buffy's new friend, Lana, seems to live a very enviable life as a latch key kid who makes her own dinner and stays up as late as she wishes or "Albertine" where the twins try to get close to a new black student who's real life may be very different than what she presents.
This is a show that has been long out of syndication. Thanks to MPI, we have uncut episodes to treasure. (One small complaint, I wish the episodes had chapter breaks.) Well worth purchasing!

Family Affair was a popular situation comedy and a regular top 20 hit show produced by Don Fedderson Productions for CBS-TV during its five-year run from 1966-71. Brian Keith stars as bachelor Bill Davis, a highly-paid engineering consultant who lives in a posh Manhattan apartment with his proper English manservant, Mr. Giles French (Sebastian Cabot). Davis' carefree existence is turned upside down when his brother and sister-in-law die suddenly in a tragic plane accident, leaving their three children orphaned. Davis becomes an instant father figure to six year-old twins, Buffy and Jody (Anissa Jones, Johnnie Whitaker) and their big sister, Cissy (Kathy Garver). In Season 3, Jody accepts a dare to clip Mr. French's beard to get into an exclusive club, Buffy brings an early Christmas to a sick little girl, Cissy yearns to become a hippie, Mr. French is cast in a movie about Henry the VIII and Uncle Bill considers marriage to a beautiful (but child-hating) Italian girl.John Williams joins the family for 9 episodes, as Mr. French's equally unflappable butler brother. Guest stars include Butch Patrick, Eve Plumb, Joe Flynn and Jamie Farr. Family Affair Season 3 contains 28 episodes on 5 discs, including the three-part "Lost In Spain" and never-before-seen bonus features.

Boston Legal - Season 2 (2004) Review

Boston Legal - Season 2 (2004)
Average Reviews:

Boston Legal is such an intelligent, brilliant and funny show. This second season is equally as good as the first, and I still watch it each and every week. The witty banter and the bizzare cases and relationships are hilarious. William Shatner and James Spader steal the show but all of the cast is really good. They all have the perfect timing and delivery that makes for a great comedy/drama.
My favourite episodes in this season are ... There's Fire (where Denny is caught in a closet with another woman on his wedding day) and the one with Tom Selleck who wants Shirley back in his life even though he's now getting married. There are also other great guest stars on here like Robert Wagner, Jeri Ryan, Leslie Jordan, Betty White, Michael J Fox, Ed Begley Jr, Parker Posey, Freddie Prinze Jr, Adam Arkin and Shelley Berman to name a few.
How they keep this show getting better all the time is beyond me. It's not just your average courtroom drama, but a fantastic show that will keep you glued to the screen everytime it's on. I really love it and hope you have as much fun with it as I do.

The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 1: 1934-1936 Review

The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 1: 1934-1936
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THIS IS AN ACTUAL VIEWED, IN FULL, REVIEW FROM AN ADVANCED COPY OF THE NEW DVD SET I RECEIVED FROM SONY PICTURES ON 10/18/07: To Stooge or not to Stooge, that is the question. For almost a decade since Sony began issuing The Three Stooges shorts on DVD, fans have been asking when chronological ordered sets would be released. During the last nine years, previous compilations have been a mixed bag of quality prints; odd pairings of titles; ill fated "themed" discs, and a color/B&W series. Some shorts were duplicated several times, while other films never saw the light of day. The number of shorts appearing on each disc steadily decreased. If you've felt burned by previous DVD releases that had splices, missing dialogue or deleted scenes, worry not.
Sony got the message. The Three Stooges Collection 1934-1936 is the first in a series of DVD's that presents the shorts in their original release order. For ardent fans, it's a knucklehead's dream. For the beginner, it is the proper way to be introduced to the legendary trio. Each short has been restored to its original running time. For those of you not familiar with the history of the Three Stooges, they made more films than any comedy team. A total of 190 shorts (or two reelers) and five starring feature films were produced from 1934 through 1965 at Columbia Pictures. They hold the record for the longest running studio association in Hollywood history. This was no accident. Simply put, The Three Stooges are funny. They produced a bunch of classic episodes. Of course, with 190 titles, there are some lemons in the barrel. However, with the first set of chronological shorts, each one has plenty of Stooge brilliance. Even their first short, "Woman Haters", an oddity done in rhythm, has enough mayhem to rise it above the "musical novelty" that it was originally billed.
The Stooges' career was drenched in irony. During their heyday of appearing in the classic short films, the Stooges longed to make feature length movies, fearing that the shorts were holding them back. But it was the Columbia shorts that kept them alive. Because of their running time (between 16-18 minutes), The Three Stooges shorts were like mini sitcoms. They weren't bogged down with dated musical numbers and gooey romantic sub plots like features starring Abbott and Costello and The Marx Brothers, for example. The pacing was that of animated cartoons and the Stooges were human cartoon characters. The short films they made 70+ years ago fit surprisingly well in today's video game generation of quick paced action, fast edits and short attention spans.
The other alleged nail in their career coffin was television. When the shorts market dried up in theatres due to the popularity of TV, the Stooges thought they were finished. Their backlog of films were sold in syndication and millions of people have been exposed to them ever since, therefore rescuing them from obscurity and cementing them as pop culture icons.
The first 19 of these episodes are featured in this collection. But they don't look like they did on TV. Sony has lovingly restored each short to its original brilliance and the results are nothing short of spectacular. The quality of the restoration is on par with that of Disney, the Looney Tunes series and classic films like "Wizard Of Oz", "Casablanca", and "Singin' In The Rain."
I've seen each of these Curly shorts more times than I should admit to, and watching these newly mastered films is like seeing them for the first time. Gone are the hairline scratches, dust, pops and other debris commonly found on TV and previous VHS and DVD prints. The black and white resolution is rich and some of the shorts look like they have a glossy finish to them. On "Three Little Pigskins", the picture is so clear at times, I can see the beauty parlor sign behind the boys and read that a polish and fingerwave cost 79 cents. The picture quality is that pristine! Those glorious sound effects jump from my speakers. The oldest film on the set is 73 years, and it looks beautiful on a widescreen HD TV.
So, if you're still asking yourself the question: to Stooge or not to Stooge, the answer should be as predictable as a slap from Moe. Why, Soitinly!

When the Three Stooges first signed with Columbia Pictures, their deal was for one short. 1934's Woman Hater, done entirely in rhyme, wasn't a huge success, but the Stooges hit their stride with their second short, Punch Drunks, and began to settle into their definitive roles - Moe as boss, Larry the middleman and Curly as their foil. Witness the rise of these comedy icons in this high-spirited collection containing the first 10 Columbia shorts, all of which have been remastered for the best quality picture and sound. You'll experience the eye-pokes, face slaps, hollow head knocks and knuckle cracks like you've never heard or seen them before. So go ahead, nyuck yourself out!

Saturday Night Live: The Complete Fourth Season, 1978-1979 Review

Saturday Night Live: The Complete Fourth Season, 1978-1979
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm very familiar with this season and would like to offer up a few of my favorite moments. This last season for Belushi and Aykroyd, along with the third season, includes the troupe's finest hours.
Season 4 highlights:
1.Rolling Stones - You may be slightly disappointed by this season-opener if you're a big Stones fan. There is no opening monologue from them, which could have been interesting. Those duties are instead helmed by NYC mayor (actually, I think he was just campaigning at the time), Ed "How Am I Doing" Koch. Jagger shows up as the main guest in a very funny Tom Snyder bit, and Ron Wood & Charlie Watts are patrons of the always-classic Olympia Café. As for the music, it comes in one big chunk, as opposed to the usual two segments. Somewhat disappointingly, the boys perform songs exclusively from the then newly-released "Some Girls" album ("Shattered", "Beast of Burden" and "Respectable"). Amazingly, their biggest hit from that album, "Miss You", is ignored. Worst of all, Mick's voice is in unusually bad form; he sounds strained, hoarse and froggy throughout. My biggest - indeed oddest - memory of this episode's original airing was the talk that followed at school on Monday. "Did you see Mick tongue kiss Keith Richards!?" As time passed and my memory got sketchier, I thought this may have been urban legend, but after getting a copy a few years ago, Mick does actually - if not "tongue kiss" - lick Ron Wood's closed mouth, and tries a similar move on Keith, who seems to shy away from it. Incidentally, this episode also includes the great Nerds "refrigerator repairman" sketch, also the subject of some talk at school that week!
2.Other musical highlights - Devo's bizarre rendition of "Satisfaction" looks as wild today as it did then, beret-wearing Ricki Lee Jones' semi-forgotten hit "Chuck E.'s in Love" recalls the beat poets she emulated, and Belushi's Samurai makes a hilarious cameo during Frank Zappa's fusion-jazz-tinged "Rollo." This is one of the strongest musical seasons, in fact. The Doobie Brothers, James Taylor, The Grateful Dead, Kate Bush, The Talking Heads, The Blues Brothers and Van Morrison all put in excellent performances. And then there's the once-trademark variety, which we also get with old-time jazzman Eubie Blake, reggae maestro Peter Tosh and blues man Delbert McClinton.
3.Tape Store - One of my favorites because it doesn't play for straight laughs, but serio-comedy instead, something completely unknown on the current show. Fred Willard is the overly-proud, overly-optimistic owner of a tape store...."no, not the audio kind, the sticky kind!" Some patrons are cruel, others are sympathetic & supportive. Like the "Nick the Lounge Singer" and the often-overlooked "Knights of Columbus", quieter, and drier reality-based skits like these showcased the incredible range of the cast, and didn't rely on the narcissistic one-joke, one-character premise.
4.Carrie Fisher - What Star Wars geek could forget this appearance! Not only was the country still gripped in the original Star Wars Mania, but Fisher showed up for the monologue in her Princess Leia costume, buns and all! She looks as good as she did in the film, if not even more sparkly. The following skit is a very humorous Star Wars themed take-off of the Annette & Frankie "Beach" movies from the `60s. As a kid, I was most shocked by another skit wherein Fisher smokes pot with her date (Belushi). It actually a humorous parody of the Lauds, the notorious subjects of "An American Family". This one, however, just talks "loud".
5.The Pepsi Syndrome - One of the most finely constructed skits I think the show ever did. Everyone does their job here, from Baba Wawa to Franken & Davis' hilarious mime routine. It's spoof without being imitation, political without being obtuse. Again, one of the great things about the Not Ready for Prime Time Players was their ability to load up skits with a variety of different gags, not relying on the repetition of one (I stress this point a second time because it's one of the biggest killers of the show today).
6.The Bad News Bees - Double entendres abound as the Bees (rarely seen by this point) get the Bad News Bears treatment. Teammates tease another boy (Belushi) for "buzzing off". I don't want to spoil it beyond that. The presence of the great Walter Matthau, reprising his Buttermaker role, gives this one some comedic weight and authenticity.
7.Superhero Party - Margot Kidder, fresh off the heels off of "Superman" success, puts in a solid, St. Partick's Day themed show. As someone of Irish descent, I've always remembered this one fondly (maybe all those Chicagoans at SNL had something to do with it!). Highlights include the Celtic stylings of The Chieftains, and the hysterical Superhero Party, hosted by Lois Lane, naturally. Partygoers are offended at the bathroom odor left behind by Belushi's Hulk, who nonchalantly remarks, "hey, it ain't supposed to smell like roses."

8.The French Chef - SNL clearly drew inspiration from Monty Python, especially in these earlier seasons. Their awestruck admiration was obvious whenever Michael Palin or Eric Idle hosted. Earlier episodes hosted by them include British-themed skits as well as the spilling of one skit into the next, a common Python technique. Here, Dan Aykroyd may be channeling host Idle with his classic Julia Childs imitation. The ridiculous amount of blood-letting that ensues recalls Python's "Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days" sketch.
There's more, but if you've read this far, I'm not sure what you're waiting for. Haven't you pre-ordered yet?

Samantha Who?: The Complete First Season Review

Samantha Who: The Complete First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Girl gets hit by a car, girl loses memory of everything before the accident, girl finds out that she was a VERY mean person, girl has a change of heart now that she has a chance to start over, gril wants to be nice and correct the mistakes that her mean self did before she lost her memory.
After watching one episode of this show I was laughing and wanting more. Christina Applegate is amazing in this. Her acting is just so dead on making you laugh at how she exaggerates everything. Jennifer Esposito (who plays Andrea, Samantha's best, and only, friend before her memory loss) is also very funny in this because she basically plays a friend that is always drunk/hung over and very mean.
Samantha's parents in this are just hysterical because they are the typical mom and dad that are still treating their adult daughter like a child and ignoring her opinions and driving her crazy.
Even though a lot of people are saying that the story is not very original, I think that they get a lot of mileage out of it.
If you aren't sure that you will like this show after (at most) 2 episodes watch it on abc.com first and then decide whether you want more.
I am absolutely getting this because it kept me laughing through the whole episode. Even though the episodes are less than 1/2 hour long, I think that it is a good way to keep people begging for more. I nearly lost my mind one week when ABC announced that it would instead air "Dancing With the Stars" for the entire night!

The Greatest American Hero - Season One (1981) Review

The Greatest American Hero - Season One (1981)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although it's now fashionable to watch a superhero struggle with his or her abilities in movies and TV, it wasn't always the case. William Katt played Ralph Hinkley an ordinary guy who is left a gift from aliens from outer space-a suit that gives its wearer the ability to fly, super strength, invisibility and much more. Suddenly, he had all these super powers but lost the owner's manual to tell him how to use it correctly. Ralph ends up flying into walls and generally having as many mishaps as a superhero could possibly have. Befriended by FBI agent Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) Hinkley partners with him and decides to fight for good. These first eight episodes (including the two hour pilot ) made up the first season of the series. The two hour pilot soars with nice comedic touches by Katt, Connie Selleca and the perfect straight man in Culp. In fact, Culp plays it so seriously that it comes off almost as a parody of a government agent.
With an exceptionally good transfer, "The Greatest American Hero" looks almost as if it was invulnerable to the ravages of time. The transfers look very nice with solid blacks and color reproduction. Considering the show is twenty five years old, there are few of the flaws that one might expect. The image is occasionally soft but and has some minor analog imperfections (such as dust, dirt particularly during the effects shots) on the whole, Anchor Bay has done a meticulous job in transferring this series to DVD. The sound while limited by the technology of the time (it was broadcast in mono) has good presence with the dialogue very clear. Some minor background hiss crops up from time to time. Although the box says this is in stereo it sounds like mono to me.
We get a pilot for a spin off entitled "The Greatest American Heroine". While only one episode was shot, what we have is quite good and promising. Sadly, no network picked up the spin-off so, until recently, it has sat on the shelf. In the spin off Hinkley hands off the suit to a young woman and she takes up where he left off. We also get interviews with stars William Katt, Robert Culp, Connie Selleca and writer/producer/creator Stephen J. Cannell. Culp provides some interesting tidbits in his interview. For example, the reason Bill Maxwell comes across so intense and humorless is because Culp decided to play the role that way. He figured that there with others playing for laughs, presenting his character as serious would provide an anchor to reality and prevent the show from becoming too tongue-in-cheek. With over an hour of interviews, this portion of the set is extremely generous. No commentary tracks from anyone but, really, the interviews do make up for that. Hopefully in future sets we can have commentary tracks on key episodes by the actors and Cannell.

Believe it or not, he's walking on air! William Katt is back as reluctant flying crime fighter Ralph Hinkley, who would know exactly how to use the red superpower suit given to him by aliens if he hadn't lost its instruction manual. In this season, Ralph pitches in the World Series, prevents World War III, suffers amnesia, joins the circus, battles bad bikers, voodoo vengeance, a fast-food mascot and much more, all with the help of his attorney girlfriend Pam Davidson (Connie Selleca) and FBI agent Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp). Who could it be? Believe it or not, he's THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO!This collection features all 22 Second Season episodes with such guest stars as Markie Post, Joe Mantegna, Barbara Hale, Keenan Wynn, Dixie Carter, Don Drysdale and more, plus all-new Extras that include revealing and fun career-retrospective interviews with creator Stephen J. Cannell and music composer Mike Post.

Becker - The First Season Review

Becker - The First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Becker was one of my all time favorite sitcoms along with Cheers and Everybody Loves Raymond. I was sorry to see the series end and don't even bother watching today's mindless sitcoms. There hasn't been anything since to compare with Becker's wry humor and unique character roles. As in Raymond & Cheers, the casting was perfect! I was delighted to see that Season One will now be on DVD and I'll look forward to the other season's series to follow. Count me in as a customer for them all!

BECKER centers on the life of Dr. John Becker, a cantankerous, yet dedicated and talented physician, who, in spite of his constant rants, has a decent heart underneath the sarcasm. BECKER will continue to unleash his views at the local diner, even in Reggie's continuing absense. Jake (Alex Desert), the blind proprietor of the local newsstand continues to turn a deaf ear to John. Bob, Becker's brash, obnoxious apartment super (Saverio Guerra), persists in annoying virtually everyone. At the office, Becker's head nurse Margaret (Hattie Winston) continues to make order out of chaos, keeping John and his space-cadet nurses-aid Linda (Shawnee Smith) in line. New to the neighborhood is Chris Konnors (Nancy Travis), Becker's new neighbor, with whom he must contend on a daily basis. Although her positive attitude is a major annoyance to Becker, he slowly begins to have feelings for her. John Becker is a cynical Harvard Medical School graduate who is somewhat of a loner and has trouble letting people get close to him. He looks at the world around him and feels society has gone mad - full of inconsistencies and just plain backward thinking. Although he is a diagnostician by trade, Becker feels he can dispense diagnoses even when no one asks. He has no qualms about saying what comes to mind, never sugarcoats his opinions and often seems to offend somebody nearby. However, his friends and colleagues recognize the heart beneath the hate and so accept his gruff demeanor for what it is.

The Critic - The Complete Series (1994) Review

The Critic - The Complete Series (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Critic is the brainchild of Al Jean and Mike Reiss (producers of The Simpsons) and is produced by Gracie Films, also of Simpsons fame. It was a highly intelligent and very funny show that made fun of movies, Hollywood, TV stations at the same time as giving us a sympathetic hero and the whacky world he lives in.
Jay Sherman is short, fat, bald and dresses like dweeb, his ex-wife hates him, his boss is always on his back, women run from him in terror and his make-up lady humiliates him at every given opportunity. He's also voiced by the increasingly adorable Jon Lovitz and has one of the best catchphrases ever. HOTCHIE MOTCHIE!!!!!
The supporting characters are equally hilarious. Jay's crazy dad is always up to some kind of insanity. His pal Jeremy Hawke (star of the controversial and highly blasphemous Crocodile Gandhi movies) is always featured in some sort of dumb action movie clip. Even his tummy has a 'feed me' voice of its own. Though the honors go to Charles Napier, who is absolutely priceless as Jay's megalomaniacal, all-American hard-man boss.
It's hard to believe ABC ditched this after ONE EPISODE!!! What were they thinking? Even Fox eventually gave up on it. Sad considering how sharp the writing and humor was. How on earth does self-indulgent, over-rated and long, long past prime trash like Friends gets 10 seasons and The Critic gets 23 episodes. You won't find Jay Sherman all but winking at the camera or pausing until the fake laughter dies down.
This complete set comes with a fair amount of extras (the cinema screen trivia cards are great) but the best is fact that we get all the 'webisodes'. In 2000 Jay made a brief comeback on the internet and all those 5 minute shows are featured on the 3rd DVD. My only complaint is, after 22 brilliant episodes, it kind of dies out with an obnoxious and annoying 'clip show' than a proper end-of-season finale. Minor complaint nonetheless.
The shows are all presented in 1.33:1 fullscreen, as drawn with a good Dolby 2.0 soundtrack. If Family Guy can come back through strong DVD sales then let's hope the same for The Critic. Now only if Duckman would come to DVD...

From the producers of "The Simpsons"! Jon Lovitz is the animated Jay Sherman, a TV movie critic who is forced to review the most pathetic films which he always rates as "It stinks." In addition to the film parodies, the show also deals with his personal life: working for a tyrannical media mogul boss, his lovelife and his family. Three-disc release includes all 23 episodes from the entire first and second seasons!

Naked News presents Turn The Other Cheek Vol 1 Review

Naked News presents Turn The Other Cheek Vol 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD was a resounding disappointment. First of all, the beautiful and elegant Victoria Sinclair, one of the world's classiest ladies even while broadcasting stark naked, is SEVERELY under-represented here. Nor is the precocious charm of the lovely and funny Samantha Paige given much play. The women who do show up most often, aside from the remarkably attractive Athena King, are those who would probably look better fully clothed. And the comedic element touted in the all-too-brief item description is nearly non-existent. All in all, this is a juvenile, poorly presented, ill-advised mess. The Naked News show has a certain audacious class, with some occasional humor and informative value. This DVD is a pitiful attempt to parlay that into a feature event.
One final note: The title is utterly misleading. I had hoped to see more of the rearview, since some of these women's best body-feature is the derriere, but no such luck. The cheek referred to must be a facial one, because backsides most definitely do not abound here.
In fine, I'm grateful that I was able to turn around and re-sell the item, recouping most of my wasted money.

Soap - The Complete First Season (1977) Review

Soap - The Complete First Season (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As soon as this set came out, I posted below, enthusiastic about receiving complete, unedited episodes, even to the point of excusing the absence of extras.
I was wrong. As discussed by others below and on the Yahoo Soap Group, a comparison of the DVD episodes with the complete, unedited episodes on the Columbia House videotapes shows that 4 DVD episodes are edited:
Episode 2 - Edits out Jody singing "There's Nothing Like a Dame" and the tune the Godfather hums after Danny leaves the sauna.
Episodes 16 and 17 are the syndicated versions, each missing 2 and 1/2 minutes from the complete episodes.
Episode 19 deletes the "On the last episode on Soap" intro.
It should be noted that the company issuing Soap on DVD, Columbia TriStar, also puts out Sanford and Son on DVD, and that a second season DVD episode of Sanford and Son, "Blood is thicker than Junk" incredibly edits out 2 and 1/2 minutes which appear on the syndicated version.
All of this, of course, is not important in light of what's happening in the world, but it does show extrememe sloppiness and lack of care by Columbia TriStar.

In Living Color - Season 1 (1990) Review

In Living Color - Season 1 (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"In Living Color" was so fresh, energetic, and hilarious when it first hit the Fox airwaves that you wondered how it could possibly keep up that level of entertainment. Well, it couldn't, exactly, but those first few shows, and many moments during the rest of the season, were insanely funny and groundbreaking.
Like all good sketch comedy, "In Living Color" immediately set out to create its own collection of recurring crazies (rather than the current SNL-method of mostly relying on celeb impressions), and look at how many still resonate: Fire Marshal Bill, the Men on Film, Anton, Homey...and so on. The show's genius is that it went for laughs anywhere it could - it could be richly satirical or downright silly and scatalogical, often in the same sketch. It basically counted on the intelligence and variety of its audience in a way that we haven't seen since, except maybe with "The Daily Show." "In Living Color" was edgy to the point of discomfort sometimes, but we wanted that too - everything else felt saccharine and safe next to "ILC," and we were ready to push some boundaries.
Eventually "In Living Color" would degenerate into low-minded skits based on grotesque impressions, gross-outs, and cruelty. But for one brief shining moment - captured on this DVD set - we all wanted to live In Living Color.

Wings - The Fifth Season (1990) Review

Wings - The Fifth Season (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, they have finally come to their senses and have started releasing the show on DVD. All I can say is it's about time. This was the funniest show of the 90's and it is my personal favorite sit-com of all time.
It just doesn't get any better. The characters are great; Joe, the anal and overly sensitive older brother; Brian, the flyboy (literally and figuratively); Helen, the quick-witted, smart-mouthed, lifelong friend; Fay, the (somewhat disfunctional) mother figure to everyone; Roy, the competition, a pain in the butt, but still always around causing trouble; and my personal favorites, Lowell and Antonio, Lowell being the village idiot that's good with a wrench but bad with everything else, and Antonio, the Italian cabby with a heart of gold but a long-fuse and a sarcastic, cynical outlook.
Season 5 was the second best season, # 4 being the best, in my ever so humble opinion.
The episodes were as follows:
1) Stop in the Name of Love: Brian decides celibacy is the best way to keep his relationship with Alex on the right track; a problem for Brian.
2) Terminal Jealousy: Roy plays pranks; Brian gets the idea that Joe and Alex have something going and Helen insults a health inspector.
3) Bye-Bye Bunny: Lowell and Bunny divorce, resulting in an unexpected twist; Antonio helps a woman upset about her cheating husband when he finds the mans cell phone in his cab.
4) Business or Pleasure: Joe asks Helen to entertain a potential investor, but Joe's idea of "entertaining" may be a little too much to ask, even if Helen likes the guy.
5) An Affair to Forget: Fay and Antonio try to help Roy change his look in order to impress a woman. Joe flies Alex, Brian and Helen to Vermont where the weather creates problems for everyone but Joe.
6) Black Eye Affair: Helen tries to create a perfect evening for her boyfriend Davis, but before he arrives everything goes wrong, from hair, to makeup, to the chef (Lowell is great in this episode), to the black eye. ***This was one of the best episodes ever***
7) Joe Blows (part 1): Joe takes off after a really bad day (everyone wants something from Joe and drives him crazy), and an irate passenger pushes him over the edge.
8) Joe Blows (part 2): Joe returns to find Brian has righted the airline, sort of, and they agree to be partners (sort of).
9) 2 Good 2 B 4 Gotten: Joe is scared when the girl from high school that had a crush on him returns to Nantucket. No one believes him when he explains her obsession. ***Another one of the best episodes***
10) Come Fly with Me: Fay, Antonio and Roy get together to try and win a radio contest. Joe, Brian, Helen and Lowell go to Boston and end up at a strange party.
11) Happy Holidays: A not so happy Christmas with Fay and Helen fighting over the party, Antonio hooking up with Lowell's ex-wife.
12) Ready, Teddy, Go: Helen finds some lingerie in Davis' luggage which sparks a problem; is it for her or is it for someone else. She doesn't like it either way.
13) Oh Give Me A Home Where the Mathers Don't Roam: Brian and Joe kick Lowell out of the house after they grow tired of his strict behavior.
14) The Faygitive: A stranger is looking for Fay and hires a PI to assist, and Antonio gets free cable from Roy's friend.
15) Say Uncle, Carlton: Antonio take a job as a chauffeur for an annoying old man, and then the annoying old man's annoying nephew shows up.
16) Hey Nineteen: Joe dates a 19 year old for fun, but Helen is annoyed (and used to be her babysitter); Roy and Antonio find (and fight over) a dog that women can't resist.
17) Exclusively Yours: Brian commits to Alex only to have Joe fly in models to Nantucket; Helen names items on her menu after people at the airport (Lowell-slaw), but the people take offense at the comparisons.
18) Moonlighting: The gang reminisces about second jobs to help Alex feel less ashamed of her second job.
19) Sleepless in Nantucket: Joe helps Brian move in (and out and in and out) with Alex as the couple try to get accustomed to each others habits.
20) Boys will be Girls: Joe and Brian play a prank on their returning coach who torementd them; but when he dies in the night and is discovered dressed as a woman, Joe and Brian must make things right, sort of.
21) Roy Crazy: Roy's ex-wife, who he has told everyone had died, shows up on the island and Roy wants to get back together. Too bad thats not what she wants. Helen has a not so secret admirer from The Crab Shack.
22) Long Distance Lament: Joe has 2 dates, and lies to get out of one, which backfires. Davis cancels on Helen again and Helen goes out with someone else, but Davis shows up after all.
23) Call of the Wild: Brian's old friend is a bad influence on Brian. Lowells' childhood idol shows up on the island, a little less than a superhero, but Lowell still worships him.
24) A Decent Proposal: Joe is trying to get a loan for the floundering Sandpiper airline while Helen gets an unexpected mid-week visit from Davis. The result of the two events is strange, to say the least.

Created by the same production team responsible for the hugely popular series Cheers, Wings has a similarly homey, familiar feel. Replacing the Boston bar is a small airport on Nantucket Island. The denizens of the bar are replaced with pilots and airport personnel. What the viewers are left with is a delightful show revolving around Sandpiper Air Service, a tiny charter airline co owned by two handsome, charming brothers, a rival airline, Aeromass, and a lunch counter run the brothers' life-long friend, Helen.

My Name is Earl - Season One (2005) Review

My Name is Earl - Season One (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
And they say that creative, bizarre shows don't make it on TV anymore...Meet Earl(Jason Lee). Earl is a petty criminal who one day won $100,000 on a scratch-off ticket. Celebrating his unexpected win, Earl is hit by a car, loses the ticket, and ends up in the hospital where he decides that he needs to balance out all the bad things he has done in his life. Finding the ticket and getting his money, Earl is convinced that karma has put him on this mission, much to the dismay of his brother Randy (Ethan Suplee), his ex-wife Joy(Jaime Pressley), and her new boyfriend Darnell the Crab Man(Eddie Steeples).
Since the airing of the pilot, both critics and audiences have been blown away by My Name is Earl. Besides a extremely talented cast whose comedic chops are perfectly timed, Earl has a solid cast of writers who create 22-minutes of laugh out loud comedy every week. Earl's guest stars in Season 1 rival only Scrubs, including Giovanni Ribisi, Johnny Galecki, Beau Bridges, Jon Favreau, Adam Goldberg, Christine Taylor, and Juliette Lewis.
Season 1 of My Name is Earl offered 24 solid episodes, including the pilot, and received the Director's Guild Award and the People's Choice Award for Best New Comedy, and was nominated for a half dozen other awards including 2 Golden Globes. This would be a 5-star show but it remains to be seen if the writers and producers can keep this level of energy up for several more seasons. As First Seasons go though, this is one of the best to come along since Scrubs.
The DVD set just released and it is jam packed with extras include 8 episode commentaries, a 15-minute mini-episode that incorporates the Family Guy into the show, deleted scenes from 6 episodes, some outtake reels that highlight the improvisational nature of Jason Lee, Jamie Pressly, and Ethan Supplee, and a Behind The Scenes look at the show. This is a solid and fun show, and it deserves a place in your collection. Highly Recommended.

Karma is a funny thing. Just ask Earl (Jason Lee), who's learning the hard way that when you do something bad, it has a way of coming back and biting you in the ass! Hoping to turn his life around, Earl's got a lengthy list of detestable deeds to make up for. Also starring Jamie Pressly, Ethan Suplee, Eddie Steeples and Nadine Velazquez, My Name Is Earl is wildly offbeat and hilariously irreverent-the #1 new comedy of the season!
