America's Funniest Home Videos: The Best Of Kids & Animals (1990) Review

America's Funniest Home Videos: The Best Of Kids and Animals (1990)

My kids, 3 and 5, enjoy a lot of the silly clips that they see on AFV and I purchased this set for them. Surprising to me, they have not shown great interest in these dvds. I think one of the issues is that the dvds include MUCH of the dialogue by the hosts, including the AFV theme music as they go to AND come back from commercial breaks. The music and dialogue combined contribute to the majority of time in these videos. In short, if you were to actually calculate the amount of time devoted to clips, it really doesn't amount to a whole lot more than you would catch in a typical episode on TV. I guess I/we expected to see a greater compilation of clips given the longevity of the show.

Wings - The Fifth Season (1990) Review

Wings - The Fifth Season (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, they have finally come to their senses and have started releasing the show on DVD. All I can say is it's about time. This was the funniest show of the 90's and it is my personal favorite sit-com of all time.
It just doesn't get any better. The characters are great; Joe, the anal and overly sensitive older brother; Brian, the flyboy (literally and figuratively); Helen, the quick-witted, smart-mouthed, lifelong friend; Fay, the (somewhat disfunctional) mother figure to everyone; Roy, the competition, a pain in the butt, but still always around causing trouble; and my personal favorites, Lowell and Antonio, Lowell being the village idiot that's good with a wrench but bad with everything else, and Antonio, the Italian cabby with a heart of gold but a long-fuse and a sarcastic, cynical outlook.
Season 5 was the second best season, # 4 being the best, in my ever so humble opinion.
The episodes were as follows:
1) Stop in the Name of Love: Brian decides celibacy is the best way to keep his relationship with Alex on the right track; a problem for Brian.
2) Terminal Jealousy: Roy plays pranks; Brian gets the idea that Joe and Alex have something going and Helen insults a health inspector.
3) Bye-Bye Bunny: Lowell and Bunny divorce, resulting in an unexpected twist; Antonio helps a woman upset about her cheating husband when he finds the mans cell phone in his cab.
4) Business or Pleasure: Joe asks Helen to entertain a potential investor, but Joe's idea of "entertaining" may be a little too much to ask, even if Helen likes the guy.
5) An Affair to Forget: Fay and Antonio try to help Roy change his look in order to impress a woman. Joe flies Alex, Brian and Helen to Vermont where the weather creates problems for everyone but Joe.
6) Black Eye Affair: Helen tries to create a perfect evening for her boyfriend Davis, but before he arrives everything goes wrong, from hair, to makeup, to the chef (Lowell is great in this episode), to the black eye. ***This was one of the best episodes ever***
7) Joe Blows (part 1): Joe takes off after a really bad day (everyone wants something from Joe and drives him crazy), and an irate passenger pushes him over the edge.
8) Joe Blows (part 2): Joe returns to find Brian has righted the airline, sort of, and they agree to be partners (sort of).
9) 2 Good 2 B 4 Gotten: Joe is scared when the girl from high school that had a crush on him returns to Nantucket. No one believes him when he explains her obsession. ***Another one of the best episodes***
10) Come Fly with Me: Fay, Antonio and Roy get together to try and win a radio contest. Joe, Brian, Helen and Lowell go to Boston and end up at a strange party.
11) Happy Holidays: A not so happy Christmas with Fay and Helen fighting over the party, Antonio hooking up with Lowell's ex-wife.
12) Ready, Teddy, Go: Helen finds some lingerie in Davis' luggage which sparks a problem; is it for her or is it for someone else. She doesn't like it either way.
13) Oh Give Me A Home Where the Mathers Don't Roam: Brian and Joe kick Lowell out of the house after they grow tired of his strict behavior.
14) The Faygitive: A stranger is looking for Fay and hires a PI to assist, and Antonio gets free cable from Roy's friend.
15) Say Uncle, Carlton: Antonio take a job as a chauffeur for an annoying old man, and then the annoying old man's annoying nephew shows up.
16) Hey Nineteen: Joe dates a 19 year old for fun, but Helen is annoyed (and used to be her babysitter); Roy and Antonio find (and fight over) a dog that women can't resist.
17) Exclusively Yours: Brian commits to Alex only to have Joe fly in models to Nantucket; Helen names items on her menu after people at the airport (Lowell-slaw), but the people take offense at the comparisons.
18) Moonlighting: The gang reminisces about second jobs to help Alex feel less ashamed of her second job.
19) Sleepless in Nantucket: Joe helps Brian move in (and out and in and out) with Alex as the couple try to get accustomed to each others habits.
20) Boys will be Girls: Joe and Brian play a prank on their returning coach who torementd them; but when he dies in the night and is discovered dressed as a woman, Joe and Brian must make things right, sort of.
21) Roy Crazy: Roy's ex-wife, who he has told everyone had died, shows up on the island and Roy wants to get back together. Too bad thats not what she wants. Helen has a not so secret admirer from The Crab Shack.
22) Long Distance Lament: Joe has 2 dates, and lies to get out of one, which backfires. Davis cancels on Helen again and Helen goes out with someone else, but Davis shows up after all.
23) Call of the Wild: Brian's old friend is a bad influence on Brian. Lowells' childhood idol shows up on the island, a little less than a superhero, but Lowell still worships him.
24) A Decent Proposal: Joe is trying to get a loan for the floundering Sandpiper airline while Helen gets an unexpected mid-week visit from Davis. The result of the two events is strange, to say the least.

Created by the same production team responsible for the hugely popular series Cheers, Wings has a similarly homey, familiar feel. Replacing the Boston bar is a small airport on Nantucket Island. The denizens of the bar are replaced with pilots and airport personnel. What the viewers are left with is a delightful show revolving around Sandpiper Air Service, a tiny charter airline co owned by two handsome, charming brothers, a rival airline, Aeromass, and a lunch counter run the brothers' life-long friend, Helen.

Best of MadTV Seasons 8, 9 & 10 (1995) Review

Best of MadTV Seasons 8, 9 and 10 (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved the first season release of MAD TV on DVD. I've been waiting forever for the second season to come out and then desperately awaiting seasons 3 to 6 which I believe where the best of the best.
This second DVD release is a bit of a big question. Why seasons 7, 8 and 9? They're not even the best seasons. In fact, season 7 was about the last of the funny seasons. They kinda started going down hill after that. I hope the rumour that MAD have decided to abandon complete season releases and release the so called "best bits" is not true.
I wouldn't have even minded if it was a so-called BEST OF Mad TV if they included sketches from the first 6 seasons as well. The best sketches and seasons where when Will Sasso, Alex Bornstien(Ms Swan), Nicole Sullivan(Vancomb Lady), Phil LaMarr(UPS Guy), Pat Kilbane(Mr Spock) Artie Lange(Slob), Bryan Callan(Kabana Boy), David Herman, Orlando Jones but they had all left by season 7 and are not on this DVD and sadly missed.
NOTE: Alex Bornstien does appear in one sketch of season 9 as Mrs Swan. I think that might have been a special guest appearance. But not enough to say she's in it. OVERALL
This DVD is OK, but it shouldn't have been released like this. I'd much prefer to see them released as a full season OR the very best of MAD-TV which would require a few more discs then just the one 2 hours long one here. You really see the decline during season 8, its ok, but it's far from the best of what MAD TV has done in the past. BONUS FEATURES:
The bonus features are worthless. They're about 3 or 4 bloopers of Stewart with or without commentary that's almost as boring as listening to a Farrelly brother's commentary track. They're not great at all. They were seen at the ends of those episodes and Commentary should be kept for something interesting. EPISODES

Madvertising: Fantana 60's style advert of chicks in bikinis. One of which is a BBW. *
Tank: Rocketeer: over confident homeboy moron trying to convince girls his cars the bomb. **
Patrol Car: The camera on the squad car shows this cop has run into a few little problems. **

My Predicament: White-trash sl## Brittany Spears music video parody. *
Abercrombie: Black & White: dumb racial sketch *No hidden Eggs.MAD TV. Season 1 was by far from the best season. But the DVD of series 1 was 5 star fantastic. Hurry up and release the full season 2 to 100 and not these compilations. Bring on series 2 already.

Will & Grace - Season Five (1998) Review

Will and Grace - Season Five (1998)
Average Reviews:

What is going on with this set? WILL & GRACE has one of the slowest release schedules so you;'d think there would be plenty of time for adding bonus features (and assembling clips from this season's episodes into three-minute montages is nobody's idea of a bonus). Where are the commentaries by the entire cast? Its just cheap. Now, we find out that the episodes are syndicated versions with minutes trimmed from each episode? Who in their right mind wants to collect edited episodes (especially when the show is playing four times a day on TV in that same edited format). People who buy season TV sets are collectors and want COMPLETE episodes. There's no excuse for foisting episodes that were edited to make room for more commercials after it went into syndication. And anyone who thinks we should be happy for such shoddy treatment, i ask, "Would you by a movie on DVD that had a musical number, an action chase scene or some dialog cut from the version you saw in the theatre?"

America's Funniest Home Videos Volume 1 (1990) Review

America's Funniest Home Videos Volume 1 (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I definitely am always in the mood for something incredibly funny at times. That has been the case with the ABC show America's Funniest Home Videos. Since its debut in 1989 with Bob Saget, the show has been a constant in our lives and television. Yet, the show has really been a real status for laughter. While the show has constantly changed with the times, so have the hosts as well from Bob Saget who played Danny Tanner from Full House, the odd short-lived duo of Daisy Fuentes and John Fugelsang, and our current master of ceremonies Tom Bergeron who has done well as the recent host of Hollywood Squares. The question for Beregeron is could he deliver as the host, the answer is yes.
America's Funniest Home Videos, Volume 1 is a look at the first season through Tom Bergeron as the host. His delivery is a real return to the hilariousness that has made the show a absolute legend for ABC. The DVD set includes several episodes from his first year the host, including side-spliting video clips that just are incredibly funny in some cases and other unfortunately aren't. The collection also includes celebrated episodes like the 300th total series episode, and of course the usual $100,000 grand prize show.
All in all, I personally haven't seen all of the first year Tom Bergeron has hosted with America's Funniest Home Videos, but I definitely know that he feelings of funniness are there. I can't wait to see this year in full on DVD, and laugh out loud like everyone else. This is a great buy for fans of AFV, or anybody who hasn't seen the series at all.

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 7 (The Killer Shrews / Hercules Against the Moon Men / Hercules Unchained / Prince of Space) Review

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 7 (The Killer Shrews / Hercules Against the Moon Men / Hercules Unchained / Prince of Space)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MST3K Volume 7 has some truly terrific and hilarious episodes that are among some of my personal favorites. The movies themselves are some of the more entertaining ones used on the show. Each one is described in turn below. The first three are from the Comedy Central years and the last is from the Sci-Fi Channel episodes:
Episode 407- THE KILLER SHREWS (with short: JUNIOR RODEO DAREDEVILS)
Killer Shrews is a classic B-grade b/w SF film from 1959 with James Best (Dukes of Hazard) and Ken Curtis (Gunsmoke). The melodrama and the endless drinking and standing around punctuated by panic as the main characters are preyed upon by small dogs dressed up as "killer shrews" is hysterically funny all on it's own. Then, the MST3K crew raises the level of humor several notches more. The short, Junior Rodeo Daredevils, is a classic MST3K bit that is referred to in many later episodes of the show (e.g., "old timer Billy Slater" is mentioned for years after this episode was made). Don't miss this!
Episode 408- HERCULES UNCHAINED
The 1959 Italian classic sequel to Hercules, also with Steve Reeves, the first and in some ways best muscleman-turned-actor, opened the door for endless "sword and sandal" epics with his two Hercules films. This sequel is slower and inferior to the first Reeves film, but the crew of the SOL makes it a special treat. The host segment where the 'Bots try and get Joel to explain what Hercules and the "nice lady" do all day as if they were kids asking a parent about a sexual situation is drop-dead hilarious, yet as always it is handled so that kids can watch the show, enjoy it, and yet have no idea what they've missed in the way of adult-level jokes.
Episode 410- HERCULES AGAINST THE MOON MEN
This is one of the funniest episodes ever ("sandstorm!"). Comments like, "This movie is equipped with airbags." at the sight of a voluptuous woman in a low-cut dress will have you howling with laughter. "I hate movies where the men wear shorter skirts than the women." says Crow. "Sandstorm, saaannnndstoooorrrrmm..." say the Mad Scientists. This film is actually a "Maciste" movie, but like most of the Italian films starring that character, the name was changed to one more marketable in the USA.
This episode has always been an absolute favorite for me. The sheer goofiness of the story, the costumes, and the fun action in the first part of the film, which is inexplicably followed by an endless scene of people struggling through a sandstorm near what should be the big climax, render this film a bit messy but loads of fun to watch. Wait till you see "Woodsy Owl." "Why is he wearing oven mitts?" asks Crow. You won't care; you'll be laughing too hard.
Episode 816- PRINCE OF SPACE
This show from the Sci-Fi Channel years is a 1959 b/w Japanese children's story about a guy in tights who runs around saving the world from some really terrible actors, whoops I mean aliens, who are clad in equally silly outfits. The film, also known as Starman, is absolutely dreadful even if judged strictly as children's fare. It's slow, nonsensical, poorly dubbed, and offers little suspense even for junior members of the audience. Of course, these qualities make it great fodder for MST3K. You will "like it very much!"
One bonus feature in the set is the inclusion of a shorts collection previously only available on VHS directly from the MST3K Info Club. The most notable short in the collection is ASSIGNMENT: VENEZUELA, originally "MSTed" for a CD-ROM project that was never completed; it was never shown on television and until the tape was released, was never seen except at the second MST3K convention put on the by show's creators back in 1996. The collection also includes the shorts CENTURY 21 CALLING and A CASE OF SPRING FEVER.
Be sure to buy this set as soon as possible. You won't be disappointed. Everything in this set is worth watching many times over as the comedy is very dense and unending till the credits finish rolling. Rhino Video, thank you for this set and please keep them coming! How about Rocketship X-M, King Dinosaur, Lost Continent, Wild Rebels and Monster A-Go-Go for starters! Publish it and we'll buy it!

I am so happy that 8 simple Rules is finally being released to DVD on 8/07/07 and season 1 is defintely one of my favorites out of all 3 hillarious seasons. I loved John Ritter in "Three's Company" and I think his roll in "8 Simple Rules is just as funny and a must own set. I was quite shocked at the low $17.99 price for this set and I would definitely pre-order it while the price is still good with all of the online market place sales that are going on right now temporarily. Paul (John Ritter) died off of the show as well as in real life in the beggining of season 2 and I find some of the episodes very sad because I knew that he would no longer be in the following seasons. There was a special two part show entitled "Goodbye in season 2 for the loss of John Ritter. After that, there was a few following episodes that dealt with the family coping with their loss and the stress of the children losing there father. I thought that the show would never be the same after that but it quickly picked back up pace, in which the show survived until after the third season and then came to an end. I did miss John Ritter after he was no longer part of the cast but the show continued with great hillarious episodes and I think that the other seasons did remarkably well. Buy and enjoy season 1 because John Ritter is on all of these shows and is so fun to watch. His memory through his comedic work is still with us and is here to be watched and enjoyed for all time. Fantasy Island - The Complete First Season (1978) Review

Fantasy Island - The Complete First Season (1978)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's about time! Finally, some of the fine work of Aaron Spelling is being released on DVD. Charlie's Angels came out a few years ago to coincide with that dire movie, then we had a long dry spell until August '05, with the release of T.J. Hooker. Hart to Hart is due out in October, then in November...Fantasy Island! My picks for next Spelling shows on DVD: Matt Houston and Family. Oh please, oh please!
Fantasy Island was a mid-season replacement, so its first season ('78-'79) only had 14 episodes and one two-hour TV movie, "Return to Fantasy Island" (the original TV Movie "Fantasy Island" aired in January '77). The episodes in the first season are as follows:
ESCAPE / CINDERELLA GIRLSDiana Canova, Bert Convy
BET A MILLION / MR. IRRESISTIBLEHenry Gibson, John Schuck
THE PRINCE / THE SHERIFF Ed Begley Jr., Lisa Hartman
FAMILY REUNION / VOODOOJuliet Mills, John Gavin, Lauren Tewes, Howard Duff
LADY OF THE EVENING / THE RACERChristopher George, Jerry VanDyke
TREASURE HUNT / BEAUTY CONTESTGene Barry, Louis Nye
THE FUNNY GIRL / BUTCH AND SUNDANCEJames MacArthur, Marcia Strassman, Christopher Connelly
SUPERSTAR / SALEMLeslie Nielsen, Gary Burghoff, Vera Miles
TROUBLE, MY LOVELY / THE COMMON MAN Don Knotts, Nancy Walker, Bernie Kopell
THE OVER THE HILL CAPER / POOF! YOU'RE A MOVIE STARRay Bolger, Foster Brooks
REUNION / ANNIVERSARY Michele Lee, Jim Backus, Lucie Arnaz
KING FOR A DAY / INSTANT FAMILY David Doyle, Theodore Bikel, Adam Rich
FOOL FOR A CLIENT / DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE Ken Barry, Rich Little, Lana Wood
CALL ME LUCKY / TORCH SINGERRichard Dawson, Dick Butkus, Edd "Kookie" ByrnesNow, just look at that list of luminaries! I mean, you won't come across Natalie Wood's sister Lana just anywhere. Marcia "Mrs. Kotter" Strassman? Gary "Radar" Burghoff? Normally you'd have to watch at least a month's worth of Match Game to see all these stars. But not with the advent of Fantasy Island on DVD. Now all you have to do is pop in one of these discs and you'll soon see Herve Villechaize once again ascending the spiral staircase, ringing the bell, and calling out, "De plane! De plane!" then scampering back to Mr. Roarke's side just in time to oversee Ken Barry being handed his fruity rum drink.
