The Muppet Show - Season Two (1977) Review

The Muppet Show - Season Two (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This four-disc set includes all 24 episodes of "The Muppet Show" from the 1977-1978 television season -- one of the show's funniest years -- digitally remastered like those on The Muppet Show - Season One and The Muppet Show - Season Three. Each show has all of its original content, includes segments originally seen only in the United Kingdom, and runs a full 25:30. As with those in the other years, the guest stars for this season are a mix of Hollywood legends and then-current celebrities, but this year had more than its share of major stars. Here's the complete line-up:
EPISODE 1: Don Knotts
EPISODE 2: Zero Mostel
EPISODE 3: Milton Berle
EPISODE 4: Rich Little
EPISODE 5: Judy Collins
EPISODE 6: Nancy Walker
EPISODE 7: Edgar Bergen
EPISODE 8: Steve Martin
EPISODE 9: Madeline Kahn
EPISODE 10: George Burns
EPISODE 11: Dom DeLuise
EPISODE 12: Bernadette Peters
EPISODE 13: Rudolf Nureyev
EPISODE 14: Elton John
EPISODE 15: Lou Rawls
EPISODE 16: Cleo Laine
EPISODE 17: Julie Andrews
EPISODE 18: Jaye P. Morgan
EPISODE 19: Peter Sellers
EPISODE 20: Petula Clark
EPISODE 21: Bob Hope
EPISODE 22: Teresa Brewer
EPISODE 23: John Cleese
EPISODE 24: Cloris Leachman
Most of these shows have a lot to offer, but to me two really stand out. First, the John Cleese show is hilarious. In its Pigs in Space skit, the Monty Python star chews up the scenery as pirate Long John Silversteen. "A pirate don't use an intercom!" Cleese scarls when a Muppet suggests a modern way to communicate. "'Twould be sissy!" The Nureyev episode, on the other hand, is a real oddity. After the ballet star sings "Putting On My Top Hat," he shoots down his chorus line with a machine gun. Later, he dances to "Swan Lake" with a human-size pig.

Bonus features include "The Muppets Valentine Day Special," a 1974 television pilot which aired more than two years before "The Muppet Show" debuted. Kermit the Frog and actress Mia Farrow star, but the host is Wally, a Henson character who would rarely be seen again. Also included is "The Muppets on The Muppets," (a 13-minute series of tongue-in-cheek interviews) and the 2002 music video "Keep Fishin'" by Weezer.
Also worth mentioning is the packaging. The menus on each disc are hosted (Fozzie Bear and Kermit chat with you on Discs 1 and 3; Animal and Rizzo handle Discs 2 and 4) and the episodes themselves have (unidentified) chapter stops. In addition, the box itself is more than just cardboard, at least in this initial printing. On the front, Miss Piggy's face is fuzzy, and her blue eyes sparkle.
Problems? Just one: the closed captioning doesn't include any song lyrics!

Walt Disney Treasures: Davy Crockett - The Complete Televised Series (1956) Review

Walt Disney Treasures: Davy Crockett - The Complete Televised Series (1956)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Davy Crockett is one of Walt Disney's most endeared and remembered live action characters. He was presented to American audiences by Walt Disney on the Disneyland TV Show in 1954. He was personified by Fess Parker beloved ever after by his sincere portrayal. This colorful and entertaining character was first seen in three episodes from the TV show ("Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter," "Davy Crockett Goes to Congress" and "Davy Crockett at the Alamo"). Parker, with his coonskin cap and homespun drawl and witticism created a nationwide phenomenon in 1954. Who can forget "The Ballad Of Davy Crockett" composed by George Bruns and Tom Blackburn. Buddy Ebsen played his sidekick George Russel, whose adventures take them from Tennessee to Washington, D.C. to the Alamo in the first three episodes. The series' third episode focusing on the defense of the Alamo, though well remembered, is somewhat labored until we see the final image of Davy Crockett passing into legend and glory. This straightforward and beautifully photographed series expounds the virtues of honesty, integrity and bravery. The country could not get enough of Davy so he and George Russel returned in 1955 for two more episodes ("Davy Crockett's Keel Boat Race" and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates"). For Davy Crockett's second season on television the show was retitled "The Legends of Davy Crockett." The necessary title change came about because we had seen Davy come to his end defending the Alamo and Walt Disney wanted to continue bringing us his adventures. "Davy Crockett's Keel Boat Race" is about a riverboat race between Davy and another American folklore hero Mike Fink. "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" is about Davy's attempt to stop an Indian uprising with Mike Fink's assistance. In some ways these two episodes are the best. Davy Crockett appears less the frontier fighter and more the good-natured peacemaker in these episodes. The riverboat race with Mike Fink is very entertaining and a high point in Disney's American frontier live action adventures. I don't even think John Ford could have filmed this sequence any better. Kenneth Tobey, who worked with John Ford, is excellent in a great comedic part (Fess Parker made note of Tobey's performance in a supplemental interview on the DVD). Walt Disney gave this actor a chance to demonstrate his great versatility and range as an actor. Also, Mike Fink's boats may look a little familiar since they are the basis for the riverboat ride at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. That's a nice nostalgic tie in! Bert Glennon's cinematography is beautifully picturesque as ever and is matched seamlessly with some very effective glass shot special effects by Peter Ellenshaw. This is one of the best DVDs to come from the Disney vaults. Walt Disney introduces each of the five episodes exactly as they were originally presented on the Disneyland TV Show. The Supplemental Features on this DVD are above and beyond what I had expected. Most of Disney's DVD extras seem to concentrate on the technical aspects of the feature presentation. This DVD focused more on the phenomenon that the legend of Davy Crockett created and the affect it had and continues to have on those who were brought up in those times. There are two exceptional Features: "A Conversation with Fess Parker" and "The Davy Crockett Craze." "The Gallery" of photos and memorabilia is also excellent. "A Conversation with Fess Parker" really hit home with me. Fess Parker appeared to be the genuine article that he was. In a world of eroded morals filled with dirt and filth everywhere you turn it was more than comforting to hear Fess Parker's fond recollections of his portrayal and the ideals that Walt immortalized through the tales of this legendary character. If your eyes feel a little watery its because your remembering a time not so long ago when our heroes were real heroes. This is one of the best and should help keep the legend alive for those that lived it, those that loved it and for those that will someday be touched by it.

M*A*S*H - Season Eleven (Collector's Edition) (1972) Review

M*A*S*H - Season Eleven (Collector's Edition) (1972)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season 11 left like M*A*S*H came in, with class. Though the show was completely different by the end, the show was still quality entertainment. The message and medium were radically different, but the quality was never lost. Even after 11 years M*A*S*H was still able to make you laugh, think, and cry, sometimes all in one episode. Some shows leave on crutches with lame stories and a tired cast. M*A*S*H didn't suffer that fate. That was rare 20 years ago, and even rarer today.
HEY LOOK ME OVER - Hawkeye sees nurse Kellye in a whole new light when she consoles a dying patient. Margaret, though, is putting up with a no-nonsence nurse who's giving the camp a once over.
TRICK OR TREATMENT - Halloween spooks most members as they exchange stories in O.R after a planned party is interupted by an influx of wounded. Mulcahy returns very tired after being worn out at the orphanage. He finds that there was a casualty, or so everyone thinks, when the good Father finds a tear in the soldier's eye.
FOREIGN AFFAIRS - Charles falls in love with a French nurse whose background concerns him. Meanwhile a North Korean prisoner is sought as a defector.
THE JOKER IS WILD - B.J, tired of hearing about Trapper's legacy as a practical joker, promises the biggest joke of all time. But, who's the real target?
WHO KNEW? - Hawkeye offeres to deliver a eulogy for a nurse that nobody knew, he dated a few times, and many didn't have good feelings for.
BOMBSHELLS - Hawkeye and Charles start a rumor, with Klinger, that Marilyn Monroe is coming to the 4077th. Word spreads like mad and almost everyone is extremely excited, including generals. B.J.s more concerned about a soldier that he had to leave for dead under fire while rescuing another.
SETTLING DEBTS - Hawkeye gets a letter from Mildred Potter, sending the Colonel into a rather paranoid streak. He places numerous phone calls to find out what's going on. Hawkeye, Charles, B.J and others set up a party for Potter's Mortgage, which was paid off early.
THE MOON IS NOT BLUE - Hawkeye and B.J try like mad to get an infamous movie to the 4077th. At the same time a visiting officer declares prohibition, including the still.
RUN FOR THE MONEY - After finding that an olympic runner is destined for the 4077th Klinger sees dollar signs and sets up bets with everyone. Everyone gets angry when it turns out the runner isn't coming. Instead it's the overweight, out of shape father of the runner. Margaret is most eager to get revenge upon a nurse from another unit.
THE U.N, THE NIGHT, AND THE MUSIC - A number of foreign dignitaries bring numerous vignets to various members. Charles meets an officer he assumes to be privledged, who's a chauffer. Margaret is infactuated with a Swedish man who has a rather delicate issue. Potter and Klinger have issues resolved an old fashioned way. Hawkeye, though, is stuck in the middle.
STRANGE BEDFELLOWS - Potter must deal with some disturbing news about his son-in-law who's visiting for a spell. Charles, meanwhile, is snoring. He denies it, keeping B.J, hawkeye awake. Eventually then entire camp yells at him, while still in denial.
SAY NO MORE - Margaret gets invited to a lecture and meeting with a doctor she admires. She ends up staying in camp with laryngitis. Hawkeye must deal with a rather calous Colonel who comes in to visit with his son who came into the 4077th in very serious condition with life in the balance.
FRIENDS AND ENEMIES - Potter must deal with a very long time friend who's behavior cost many patients their lives. B.J's ingrown toenail is a cause for aggravation when Charles gets some new records. Margaret gets a record player but no records to play. B.J conspires to stop the playing.
GIVE AND TAKE - A soldier comes in and he must deal with the man he shot who's lying next to him. He begins to question his own motives when the man was after his boots to keep his feet warm.
AS TIME GOES BY - After reading about a time capsule being in Stars and Stripes, Margaret and Hawkeye concoct a plan to build their own. This capule includes Radar's Teddy bear, a pair of boots, a dress from Klinger, a fishing lure, and a bottle of booze, which Margaret refuses to put in until Charles reminds her that it will be over 150 years old when the capsule is opened. Klinger tries to deal with a female sniper who was captured with a high powered rifle. (note: This was the final moments for everyone as G.F.A was filmed prior to this.
GOODBYE FAREWELL AND AMEN - The final episode is the most watched single show in the history of television, a record that is likely to never be broken. Nice to finally see it on DVD, and totally uncut.
Hawkeye is in a mental ward suffering from a complete breakdown after a rather disturbing bus ride after a day at the beach. Charles deals with the long delayed building of a latrine. He "captures" some North Koreans whom he fears will kill him when they reach into a motorcycle. They pull out insturments and proceed to drive Charles nuts while he tries to listen to Mozart. They play Mozart, and then he starts to train them classically.
Mulcahy must deal with possible deafness after trying to save some P.O.W's being held at the unit when the camp is shelled. B.J gets orders to go home early, which Potter says is unfair to the rest of the camp many of whom have been there longer. Potter let's him go after the entire camp, after seeing pictures of Erin, cheers at B.J's cries to be there for his daughter's second birthday. B.J leaves shortly before Hawkeye returns from his time away.
Klinger starts to have strong feelings for a Korean Woman, who was brought in as a sniper suspect, in As Time Goes By. He eventually asks her to marry him. She accepts.
Finally, after the all the wounded are finally gone, they entire camp sits down to talk about what their plans are. Potter will become semi-retired, and open the backroom as an office. Hawkeye will take over as the doctor in Crab Apple Cove. He says that after the experiences there "Being where the action is isn't all it's cracked up to be, for that neither is cracking up!" He figures that he wants to be able to talk to patients so he'll be a simple doctor in his home town. B.J says that he met this little cookie in the airport who begged him to run away with her "I figure what the heck" then says he's only kidding.
Everyone talks about getting home. Everyone, except that is, for Klinger, who's staying in Korea. Because his fiancee needs to find her family first.
Their final day together includes Klinger's marriage and lot's of tearful goodbyes, including a nice exchange between Charles and Margaret who've never really seen eye-to-eye.
All in all a great episode and I couldn't think of a better way to end the show. Klinger staying in Korea after all his attempts to get a section-8. Mulcahy, a priest, dealing with deafness. Charles facing serious issues with music after the prisoners he was working with and befriends are all killed aside from one. B.J and Hawkeye who've become the best of friends realizing that they may never see eachother again.

As the eleventh season begins, rumors are running rampant around camp. One rumor has everyone believing that Marilyn Monroe is going to pay the 4077 a special visit, while another claims that the peace talks are finally making headway. This second rumor gets Margaret thinking after Charles mentions how a Los Angeles skyscraper had a time capsule built into its cornerstone. Although he thinks the idea is insane, Margaret decides to make a time capsule of her own to bury in camp. "We could put something in the ground to remind people we were here," she suggested. With Hawkeye's help, items from around camp were gathered up for the capsule: a chopper's broken fan belt, Radar's teddy bear, one of Henry Blake's fishing flies, a bottle of Charles's cognac and Father Mulcahy's boxing gloves. And finally, the gang of the 4077 hears the announcement they've been waiting for:"This is Robert Pierpoint speaking to you from nearby Panmunjom. It is one minute before ten p.m. We can still hear the sound of nearby artillery. At some point during the next few seconds, the guns should go silent, as the cease-fire officially goes into effect...There it is. That's the sound of peace."

Happy Days - The Third Season (1974) Review

Happy Days - The Third Season (1974)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This, in my opinion, is the best season of Happy Days. The writing was outstanding and Henry Winkler was at his peak. THIS is the season that should have ranked as the #1 show on television (it finished at #11, season four is the one that reached the top). There is one problem with the DVD though. Certain episodes (very few...I think) are edited. One of my all-time favorite scenes is missing. It is the end tag of the episode titled "Fonzie's New Friend". This is where Fonzie does the limbo. But it's gone....why? I also noticed a couple of edits here and there on one or two other episodes. The sad thing is that this is probably the only form these episodes will ever be released in. Yet, we won't ever be able to see certain parts of some episodes. Sad.
On a lighter note, I recently had the opportunity to see the Happy Days house when I was in Hollywood. Of course this was just used for the exterior shots, but it hasn't changed much. If you're ever out there and you're interested in seeing it, it's easy to find. I can't give you the house address here (especially since people actually live there) but it's easy to research on the internet.

"Happy Days" was set in the 1950s in Milwaukee, the heart of middle-class America, and told the story of the Cunningham family. Mr. Cunningham (Tom Bosley) ran the local hardware store and Mrs. Cunningham (Marion Ross), like all good TV Moms, spent her time in the kitchen. Their son, Richie (Ron Howard), hung out at Arnold's Drive-In with his pals Ralph Malph (Donny Most) and Potsie (Anson Williams), trying to be as cool as the coolest greaser in town, the Fonz (Henry Winkler). Richie's sister, Joanie (Erin Moran), tagged along whenever she wasn't at her friend Jenny Piccolo's house. The Cunninghams also had an older son, Chuck, but he mysteriously disappeared after the first season.

She-Ra: The Complete Series Review

She-Ra: The Complete Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
She-ra is a cartoon that was popular in the 1980's and is a spin-off of He-Man. It is about Princess Adora (He-Man's twin sister) who lives in Etheria, a planet under the rule of the Evil Horde. The Evil Horde is tyrannical and rebel forces fight to overthrow the oppressive rulers. Princess Adora transforms into She-ra when she holds up her magical sword and as She-ra, she gains extra human strength. She-ra uses her powers to fight alongside the rebellion against the Horde and to protect the Etherians.
This collection of the entire series comes with 10 DVD's, an iron on She-Ra for t-shirts, and a sheet of stickers. There are no bonus or special features, but given the price I would say this collection is well worth it if you don't already own previously released She-ra DVD's. The image quality of these DVD's is pretty good considering the age of this series. I give this product 5 out 5 stars because even though it doesn't have special features, its all about the show and this is one awesome show!

Gilligan's Island: The Complete Third Season (1964) Review

Gilligan's Island: The Complete Third Season (1964)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Gilligan's Island," while never a hit with the critics, is beloved today by millions of fans. I don't remember when the series was on during primetime, but I fondly recall coming home from school to catch it in the afternoons. This DVD set covers the final season of the short-lived series and it contains some of my favorite episodes. Gilligan thinking that he's a vampire, Gilligan being hunted by a big game hunter, MaryAnn thinking that she's Ginger, a witch doctor casting spells on the castaways, and many more memorable episodes. My all time favorite is included here - "The Producer" with Phil Silvers as the over-the-top movie producer Harold Hecuba.
The entire episode list follows:
#1 - Up at Bat - After being bitten by a bat, Gilligan is convinced that he is turning into a vampire.
#2 - Gilligan vs. Gilligan - Gilligan can't convince the others that there is a Russian spy on the island and he looks just like him!
#3 - Pass The Vegetables Please - Gilligan finds a crate of radioactive vegetable seeds that give the castaways superhuman powers.
#4 - The Producer - Phil Silvers guest stars as Harold Hecuba and the castaways try to impress him by staging their own version of "Hamlet."
#5 Voodoo - A witch doctor makes dolls in the likeness of the castaways and casts spells on them.
#6 Where There's A Will - Mr. Howell decides to revise his will and leave everything to his fellow castaways. When they throw him a party, he thinks that they are out to kill him.
#7 Man With A Net - John McGiver guest stars as Lord Beasley, a butterfly collector in pursuit of the elusive pussycat swallowtail.
#8 Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow - Gilligan and the Skipper mysteriously go bald and decide to live in a cave to avoid the stares of the others.
#9 - Ring Around Gilligan - Vito Scotti guest stars as mad scientist Dr. Boris Balinkoff who controls the castaways with a hypnotic ring.
#10 - Topsy-Turvy - Gilligan is having vision problems and there are headhunters on the island.
#11 - The Invasion - Gilligan finds an attache case filled with top secret files and has a dream that is Agent 014.
#12 - The Kidnapper - Don Rickles guest stars Norbert Wiley, a kidnapper who holds the women for ransom.
#13 - And Then There Were None - The castaways are vanishing one by one and Gilligan, thinking he is responsible, has a dream that he is Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde.
#14 - All About Eva - Tina Louise has a field day as the drab Eva Grubb, who gets a beauty make-over from the girls and ends up looking just like Ginger.
#15 - Gilligan Goes Gung Ho - Law and order is needed on the island so Skipper becomes the sheriff and Gilligan his deputy.
#16 - Take A Dare - Strother Martin guest stars as George Barkley, who is trying to win $10,000 by surviving on a deserted island. Only this island isn't deserted!
#17 - Court-Martial - The Skipper is distraut when he hears that he is at fault for the Minnow shipwreck.
#18 - The Hunter - Rory Calhoun plays big game hunter Jonathan Kinkaid, who wants to hunt humans.
#19 - Lovey's Secret Admirer - Mr. Howell is sending his wife anonymous love letters.
#20 - Our Vines Have Tender Grapes - Denny Miller guest stars as Tongo, the Ape Man, who is actually an actor vying for a movie role.

#26 - Slave Girl - Gilligan saves the life of a native girl and now she wants to be his slave for life.
#27 - It's A Bird, It's A Plane - A jet pack floats into the lagoon - the Professor thinks that there is enough fuel in it to get one of them back to Hawaii.
#28 - The Pigeon - Sterling Holloway plays a prisoner who uses his homing pigeon to correspond with the castaways.
#29 - Bang! Bang! Bang! - A crate of molding plastic washes ashore and the castaways start using it but are unaware that it is actually an explosive.

Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats (1984) Review

Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My younger brother and I watched this cartoon growing up in the 1980s. Because it wasn't a superblockbuster (GI JOE..etc) I am glad that it is being released on DVD.
Even though we never figured out why Iggy Nutmeg (the young boy in the "Heathcliff" segments) always was dressed up while Jennifer went casual and Grandma and Grandpa also looked (for their generation) informal, the series was great. Heathcliff was a cat who lived with the Nutmegs and, although generally well behaved, and wanting to impress his girlfriend Sonia (also a cat) got into trouble around the neighborhood.
He obviously wasn't content with being just a housecat because Heathclif was always cooking up some kind of 'get-rich-quick' scheme, but the family always forgave him and loved him exactly for who he was.
I loved the car which the Cadilac Cats had, it litterally changed into anything. Sure they lived in a junkyard and knew how to fend for themselves if need be, but the Cadilac Cats weren't hooligans. They were usually well-mannered cats and their leader Rif-Raf, honestly wanted nothing more than to be with his beloved Cleo, who worked at a music store. Plus (again to the perspective of a little kid) their makeshift house from an old airplane looked really cool.
I hope that whoever took the initiative to bring the series to DVD also included the theme song. Many years later, the lyrics and beat are still memorable.
