(More customer reviews)If you were pleased with the DVD releases of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, you should be equally pleased with the She-Ra Princess of Power DVD box sets. She-Ra Princess of Power Season One, Vol. 1 features the first thirty two episodes of the series. This is the first season set release for She-Ra, as the prior She-Ra release was a ten episode best of release.
It's clear from the packaging and beyond that Ink & Paint put as much effort into the She-Ra release as they did the He-Man series. The box design is similar and similar to the He-Man sets there is artwork on the spine of the box that will one day form a complete picture. The She-Ra DVD box set also includes two collectible 4X6 art cards and a plethora of bonus material.
The DVD set begins with the five part episode The Secret of the Sword. If you purchased The Best of She-Ra this past summer, these are the same episodes that were featured on that set. For those who don't recall, The Secret of the Sword is the animated movie that introduces the She-Ra character. Prince Adam makes a trip to Eternia and before all is said and done, Adora finds her power as She-Ra when she raises the sword aloft, she fights being brainwashed by the Horde, and much more. Basically, this is the movie that introduced the She-Ra character and tells her background. Adora is the twin sister that He-Man never knew about. Both have alter ego's, his is He-Man, hers is She-Ra.
The episode quality is really good. She-Ra is a show that appealed to both boys and girls. Although She-Ra was a female heroine, many of the shows episodes featured strong storylines by supporting characters. One character who enjoyed a lot of screen time was Bo. In the episode, "The Red Knight," Bo feels his manhood was challenged when the mysterious Red Knight beats him in a series of physical events. Feeling down, Bo leaves home and sets out for the Whispering Woods along. In another episode, two young boys tell Bo that their father's axe was stolen, when actually they lost it. Bo goes off to retrieve the axe and finds danger. She-Ra rescues him.
She-Ra has many friends including Castaspella, Madame Razz, Glimmer, and Cowell. Light Hope and Madame Razz are among the few who know share the secret that Adora is She-Ra.
Similar to the He-Man series, there is a moral or lesson at the end of the episode which is explained for viewers. She-Ra is an enjoyable series, and it's good to see the show on DVD after waiting for so long.

The New Adventures of Superman - (DC Comics Classic Collection) (1966) Review

That's how announcer Jackson Beck opened this classic show from 1966. The opening scene showing Superman smashing meteorites to the show's very '60s jazz main title theme still looks cool.
Following the '40s Fleischer Superman (made for theaters) and the '50s Adventures of Superman (first done as a movie then a TV series), Filmation's New Adventures of Superman (1966) was the first Superman done specifically for television. Paid a sum of $36,000 per completed half-hour by CBS (who struck a deal with DC Comics to create the show), Superman also was the then-little studio's first major TV deal.
The legacy of the more revered Fleischer Superman shorts was not lost on Filmation. "The Fleischers did, as far as I'm concerned, the definitive one. So much so that we actually managed to hire some of them to work for us," producer Lou Scheimer said.
In additon to comics faithful character designs, and effective yet limited [compared to today] animation, The New Adventures of Superman also featured the voices of Fleischer Superman's Bud Collyer and Joan Alexander (alternating with Julie Bennett) as the animated Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
As a result, the series was a breakout hit. So much so Filmation was given a bonus and a 2nd season where the show expanded to "The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure" adding heroes Green Lantern, Hawkman, the Flash, the Atom, Teen Titans, and Justice League to the lineup.
Due to the ongoing Siegel/DC/Time Warner battle for Superboy copyrights, the Superboy episodes originally sandwiched between the Superman episodes are not included in this set. Despite this, I still recommend the set solely on the strength of the thirty-six 6 min. Superman eps that are included.

These adventures were the first time that Superman (and his alter ego Clark Kent), Lois Lane and Perry White had been seen in animated form since they were immortalized in the iconic Superman short films of the 1940s. In addition, this series marked the animation debut of Jimmy Olsen and classic Superman villains like Lex Luthor and Brainiac. This animated Superman was forerunner show that lead to all the subsequent animated superhero programming.

(More customer reviews)He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Season Two Volume Two arrives in a beautiful, colorful box set. Each of the six discs features artwork of various characters including Teela, Meckaneck, Two-Bad, and Zodac among others.
The final 32 episodes include some of the best written episodes and well loved episodes of the series. Fans of the series can look forward to owning the episodes "Not So Blind," "Teela's Triumph," and "The Greatest Show On Eternia" on DVD for the first time among other fantastic season two episodes.
Ink and Paint once again held back nothing when it came to a He-Man release. This final installment of episodes from the original series is of the highest quality. The set includes two collectible cards, one drawn by Dan Brereton and the other by Mike McKone. In addition to the cards, the set includes plentiful bonus features.
Believe it or not, they managed to produce more brand new documentaries. The first documentary is titled "The Stories of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." It's an interesting documentary where various people involved with the show speak about the final 32 episodes. Much of the conversations are about the episodes "The Greatest Show in Eternia" and "Not So Blind." It is mentioned that the writers and people involved with the show knew before production started that despite good ratings this would be the last season due to decisions from financial backers. It was also mentioned by one writer that the show had pretty much run it's course. By the show being episodic in nature, everything had to be wrapped up by the end of each episode. If they could have had continuing storylines the show may have had potential to last longer.
He Man and the Masters of the Universe Season Two Volume 2 is a must purchase to complete your He-Man DVD collection.

The hit cartoon adventure series brought to life the adventures of Prince Adam & his alter-ego, the mighty He-Man battling the evil Skeletor to protect the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Son of King Randor and Queen Marlena of Eternia, his faithful sidekick was the cowardly green & orange pet tiger, Cringer. "By the power of Grayskull!" Adam's cry in times of danger, together with his magical 'Sword Of Power' transformed them into the mighty He-Man and the ferocious tiger, Battle Cat. Aided by Man-At-Arms, Duncan (the slightly older scientist and Adam's mentor), his adopted daughter Teela (Captain of the Guards and Prince Adam's aide), the quirky & comic Orko (the little floating magician) & Ram Man (kind hearted, but slow "human battering ram") with his winged ally Stratos, the team faced the forces of evil. The show ran for two seasons, of 65 episodes each - hence the DVD release of each season has been split into 2 Volumes each, over the next 2 years. Initially, many of the stories put our heroes against Skeletor, revolving around Castle Grayskull. As the series grew the adventures took them to many different locations and foes, often putting characters on both sides of the battle. Sometimes criticized for being too dark & violent for its time, this claim seems a little redundant in today's age of children's graphic animation. Particularly note-worthy is that each episode ended with one or two of the characters presenting a moral from that episode's tale - the consequences of thoughts & actions, which makes the series particularly relevant given the times we live in. For fans of the show - its a great chance to relive those golden moments of childhood, & hopefully it will open the door to a whole new generation of fans, adults & kids. Get ready to feel the power of Grayskull!

The Adventures of Aquaman: The Complete Collection (DC Comics Classic Collection) Review

Aquaman: "I don't know. The fish are trying to tell me something."
My man Arthur Curry (aka Aquaman) has been around a long time, having debuted in More Fun Comics in 1941 and off-and-on starring in his own comic book. And, despite the longevity and near-but-not-quite iconic stature, there are busloads of people who just aren't feeling Aquaman. And I guess I can see where they're coming from. He's a bit hard to pigeonhole, this outsider, as he's forever tiptoeing the line of superhero and undersea sovereign. Priorities are a definite issue. With much cooler capes like Batman, Superman, the Flash, and Green Lantern doing their thing, Aquaman as a superhero pales in comparison, right? I mean, he's a guy whose super powers are chit-chatting with fish, breathing underwater, and swimming really fast. And these talents don't really translate well when he ventures to shore. Not to mention, remove him from his watery environs for longer than an hour, and he croaks. Wussy stuff, right? But here's the thing: I dig Aquaman. I liked him lots when I was a mere tadpole, and this was because of his cartoon show. When I was a teen it became more of a pity liking, a rooting-for-the-underdog thing. I felt bad for the guy, relegated all the time to secondary status in the Super Friends show and in the JLA comics. But at least he had his own cartoons.
From 1967 to 1968, CBS thrilled kids of all ages with THE SUPERMAN/AQUAMAN HOUR OF ADVENTURE, a Filmation-produced animated series. This hour-long show, comprised of 7 minute episodes, not only starred the titular superheroes (and Superboy) but also provided "guest" episodes featuring the Flash, Hawkman, the Atom, Green Lantern, the JLA, and the Teen Titans. Later in 1968, this show was retooled as a half hour show and titled simply AQUAMAN, although the "guest" spots were still re-ran (Superman and Superboy, however, were ix-nayed). Maybe, someday, we'll see a dvd with these "guest" episodes, but for now I feel good that the high muck-a-mucks are releasing the entire Aquaman cartoon collection.
THE ADVENTURES OF AQUAMAN - THE COMPLETE COLLECTION returns us to a time when Aquaman was perceived as clean-cut, straight-laced, and non-controversial, long before writer Peter David got his nervy hands on him in the mid-'90s and proceeded to do the big makeover. Fans of the Justice League Unlimited TV series would now know him as a burly, long-haired, bearded figure, arrogant and lordly, naked to the waist and with a hook for a hand. And someone NOT to be effed with. I don't know what DC Comics has in store for Aquaman because I haven't been keeping up with his current title (although I hear AQUAMAN: SWORD OF ATLANTIS just ended its run with issue #57). Anyway, his more recent incarnation is quite a drastic change from his erstwhile squeaky clean image. Speaking of which, let's go back to the Aquaman cartoons.
The Aquaman cartoons shy from typical superhero fare, certain limitations coming with having the ocean as your workplace. No cops and robbers as we know it. No familiar cityscapes. The rules are different. And, yet, there's evidently more villainy in the waters than one would assume. Assisting Aquaman (and sometimes hindering him) in his policing of the Seven Seas and safeguarding the domed city of Atlantis are Aqualad (a clear sidekick ripoff of Robin) and the lovely Mera, whom I don't think is Aquaman's wife here. Aquaman doesn't really have a standout cast of supervillains on his rolodex, perhaps another reason why he's not more popular. Black Manta, his most vaunted superfoe, makes two appearances ("Menace of the Black Manta" and "The Silver Sphere"). The Sea King is equally busy with other recurring nasties the Mer-Queen Vassa, the Fisherman, and the Brain. Aquaman also tackles a bevy of vile deep sea monsters or creatures and dastardly space aliens, one race of whom merely wanted to shrink and collect ocean life samples, but they should never have taken Tusky. And, sometimes, Aquaman's adventures enter into the realm of the just plain weird. "War of the Water Worlds," for one - in which Aquaman stumbles onto another water world lying beneath the ocean - is memorable for the grotesque fishes and monsters.
All 36 shorts are here in all their 7 minute glory, and they look fabulous on my screen. These Aquaman cartoons didn't try to change the world or champion a cause or go overboard with plot or character development. At seven minutes long, is you crazy? Not much chance here for intricate world shaking stuff. Instead, these episodes are ideal for the kiddies and their miniscule attention span. Aquaman made an impression on me when I first saw him on the idiot box, what with the aquatic superheroics and the nutty walrus and cool seahorses and the science-fictiony Aqua Cave and the very cool watery kingdom. The clearest memory I probably have of this show is Aquaman fashioning hard water spheres or swirls with his hands and then pelting 'em at whatever. The undersea world is conveyed in a wash of brilliant colors, lending it a truly mysterious and otherworldly feel. And I remember how I keenly marveled at the grace with which Aquaman and company navigated thru the deeps. For late '60s animation, Filmation did excellent work, with special note to the characters' smooth movements. I try not to use the adjective "gorgeous" too much, because, well, you know...But, what the hell, this show looks gorgeous! And, if nothing else, you get to learn more about the many denizens of the sea as Aquaman is forever asking for help from the fishies.

Set in the lost city of Atlantis, Aquaman is the hero from the deep who protects the sea against any foes who threaten the peaceful undersea life. Aided by his ward Aqualad, Aquaman fights for justice on the ocean floor while keeping close contact with friends on dry land.

The Best of She-Ra - Princess of Power (1985) Review

I have spent MANY, MANY YEARS waiting for "She-Ra" to come out on DVD, and it's FINALLY happening! HOORAY!
The release of the "She-Ra" DVD sets will be similar to that of the "He-Man" DVDs. The first "She-Ra" DVD set will consist of the movie "The Secret of the Sword" (which features He-Man and explains how Adam has a twin sister, how Adora became She-Ra, etc.) as well as five of the most popular episodes from the series, which were voted on by fans at He-Man.org. The five episodes that will be featured on the "Best of She-Ra" DVD are "The Price of Freedom," "The Sword in the Stone," "Horde Prime Takes a Holiday," "Of Shadows and Skulls," and (my personal favorite) "Sweet Bee's Home."
The quality of the "He-Man" DVD sets is incredible, and the "She-Ra" DVDs are expected to be just as good, if not better. In addition to the fully restored episodes, the "Best of She-Ra" DVD set will include a documentary, feature-length audio commentary, a music video, storyboard spreads, DVD-ROM scripts, "She-Ra" trivia, hidden Easter eggs, and two collectible comic book art cards. How cool is that?!

Words cannot express how excited I am about this DVD set! I grew up obsessed with She-Ra, and I am STILL obsessed with She-Ra! When I was a young girl I owned all the She-Ra action figures, the Crystal Castle...even that awful Crystal Falls playset that had a pump shaped like a seashell and squirted water all over everything! I had She-Ra books, She-Ra clothes, a She-Ra birthday cake...EVERYTHING! For the past 20 years I've had to settle for watching my treasured yet crappy VHS copies of the series that I always feared would fall apart at any moment. Now I'm finally going to have the entire series on DVD to enjoy in all its glory for the rest of my life! I couldn't be happier!
July 18 is already marked on my calendar...I am probably going to take the day off work so I can sit at home and watch "She-Ra" all day! I'll be able to recite the words to every episode, too, since I watched them all about a thousand times! "I am Adora, He-man's twin sister and defender of the Crystal Castle." AHHHH! I get goosebumps just thinking about it!

It is about Princess Adora (He-Man's twin sister) who lives in Etheria, a planet under the rule of the Evil Horde. The Evil Horde is tyrannical and rebel forces fight to overthrow the oppressive rulers. Princess Adora transforms into She-ra when she holds up her magical sword and as She-ra, she gains extra human strength. She-ra uses her powers to fight alongside the rebellion against the Horde and to protect the Etherians.
This collection of the entire series comes with 10 DVD's, an iron on She-Ra for t-shirts, and a sheet of stickers. There are no bonus or special features, but given the price I would say this collection is well worth it if you don't already own previously released She-ra DVD's. The image quality of these DVD's is pretty good considering the age of this series. I give this product 5 out 5 stars because even though it doesn't have special features, its all about the show and this is one awesome show!

(More customer reviews)There's no denying it: BCI Eclipse had some incredible animated titles that risked becoming forever lost to the archives of time once the company was forced to shut its doors this past year. Fortunately Mill Creek Entertainment, which by the way is distributed by BCI's parent company, Navarre, has acquired the rights to bring many of BCI's titles to the home market once more. Even more impressive still is that these sets will be packaged up and sold as complete box sets (rather than individual season releases).
In the case of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, this set represents the complete 2002-series release by Mike Young Corporation. Coming in at a total runtime of 960 minutes, this set spans 4 discs and contains the same clear-plastic slipcase and artwork-style as the previous BCI releases.
The extras contained are only slightly less thorough than the individual season releases and include:

In case you're just tuning in, no this isn't the Filmation version of the show so many of us recall with warm fuzzies from our youth. This is in fact the third (and most recent) animated iteration of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Produced for Cartoon Network by Mike Young
Productions, this version ran from 2002 until 2004 where it went for two full seasons (26 in the first season, 13 in the second). Along the way it managed to snag a very well deserved Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing (2004).
While there are few who could argue successfully that anything could replace the original Filmation series, Mike Young Productions managed to capture all of the elements that made the original so successful and to bring them up to modern standards of animation quality, sound work, and script writing. As a result the mythos had been brought to an entirely new generation of fans while simultaneously pleasing fans of the original.
Without giving too much away (I hate spoilers personally), I will say that the origins of Snake Mountain will begin to unfold in the second-half of the first season in addition to the complete origin of the Dark Hemisphere which imprisons Skeletor and his minions. New characters are plentiful as well and contain some slick back-story efforts, which make even the original Mattel toys a lot more desirable. Among the notables includes the stories of Two-Bad, Cobra Kahn, Cyclone, Roboto, Moss Man, Zodak, and Stinkor. Many of these characters were never fully fleshed out in the original show (if they appeared at all) and would have remained only in the imaginations of those who played with the toys if not for the spectacular effort here. We are also treated to a couple of new looks for He-Man himself including an amped up version of he and Skeletor in combat and his ever impressive winter gear which includes a flowing fur cape and a heavy battle ax.
The Snakemen element introduced in the first season develops into sheer brilliance in the second (and unfortunately final) season! Not to insinuate that the Masters didn't have their hands full as it was with Skeletor and his minions, this time around the threats to peace and justice come in from all angles in the form of the Skeletor and company, the Snake Men, and the Evil Horde! Yes, you read that correctly- She-Ra's arch nemesis, Hordak, who just so happens to have been Skeletor's mentor, shows up in Season 2 within Skeletor's origin story that finally ties all of the loose threads of Mattel's franchise together once and for all.
I often like to wonder what ground Mike Young's team would have covered had the show continued. Would they have expanded to include He-Man's sister (She-Ra's) story arc? Could have writer Larry DeTillio revisited some of his wise dragon influence? A shame that we'll probably never know.
All in all, the show simply continued to build upon the foundation first set by Filmation in the 1980s and thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment, can be yours in its entirety for the cost of each of the single season releases.
