M*A*S*H - Season Eleven (Collector's Edition) (1972) Review

M*A*S*H - Season Eleven (Collector's Edition) (1972)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season 11 left like M*A*S*H came in, with class. Though the show was completely different by the end, the show was still quality entertainment. The message and medium were radically different, but the quality was never lost. Even after 11 years M*A*S*H was still able to make you laugh, think, and cry, sometimes all in one episode. Some shows leave on crutches with lame stories and a tired cast. M*A*S*H didn't suffer that fate. That was rare 20 years ago, and even rarer today.
HEY LOOK ME OVER - Hawkeye sees nurse Kellye in a whole new light when she consoles a dying patient. Margaret, though, is putting up with a no-nonsence nurse who's giving the camp a once over.
TRICK OR TREATMENT - Halloween spooks most members as they exchange stories in O.R after a planned party is interupted by an influx of wounded. Mulcahy returns very tired after being worn out at the orphanage. He finds that there was a casualty, or so everyone thinks, when the good Father finds a tear in the soldier's eye.
FOREIGN AFFAIRS - Charles falls in love with a French nurse whose background concerns him. Meanwhile a North Korean prisoner is sought as a defector.
THE JOKER IS WILD - B.J, tired of hearing about Trapper's legacy as a practical joker, promises the biggest joke of all time. But, who's the real target?
WHO KNEW? - Hawkeye offeres to deliver a eulogy for a nurse that nobody knew, he dated a few times, and many didn't have good feelings for.
BOMBSHELLS - Hawkeye and Charles start a rumor, with Klinger, that Marilyn Monroe is coming to the 4077th. Word spreads like mad and almost everyone is extremely excited, including generals. B.J.s more concerned about a soldier that he had to leave for dead under fire while rescuing another.
SETTLING DEBTS - Hawkeye gets a letter from Mildred Potter, sending the Colonel into a rather paranoid streak. He places numerous phone calls to find out what's going on. Hawkeye, Charles, B.J and others set up a party for Potter's Mortgage, which was paid off early.
THE MOON IS NOT BLUE - Hawkeye and B.J try like mad to get an infamous movie to the 4077th. At the same time a visiting officer declares prohibition, including the still.
RUN FOR THE MONEY - After finding that an olympic runner is destined for the 4077th Klinger sees dollar signs and sets up bets with everyone. Everyone gets angry when it turns out the runner isn't coming. Instead it's the overweight, out of shape father of the runner. Margaret is most eager to get revenge upon a nurse from another unit.
THE U.N, THE NIGHT, AND THE MUSIC - A number of foreign dignitaries bring numerous vignets to various members. Charles meets an officer he assumes to be privledged, who's a chauffer. Margaret is infactuated with a Swedish man who has a rather delicate issue. Potter and Klinger have issues resolved an old fashioned way. Hawkeye, though, is stuck in the middle.
STRANGE BEDFELLOWS - Potter must deal with some disturbing news about his son-in-law who's visiting for a spell. Charles, meanwhile, is snoring. He denies it, keeping B.J, hawkeye awake. Eventually then entire camp yells at him, while still in denial.
SAY NO MORE - Margaret gets invited to a lecture and meeting with a doctor she admires. She ends up staying in camp with laryngitis. Hawkeye must deal with a rather calous Colonel who comes in to visit with his son who came into the 4077th in very serious condition with life in the balance.
FRIENDS AND ENEMIES - Potter must deal with a very long time friend who's behavior cost many patients their lives. B.J's ingrown toenail is a cause for aggravation when Charles gets some new records. Margaret gets a record player but no records to play. B.J conspires to stop the playing.
GIVE AND TAKE - A soldier comes in and he must deal with the man he shot who's lying next to him. He begins to question his own motives when the man was after his boots to keep his feet warm.
AS TIME GOES BY - After reading about a time capsule being in Stars and Stripes, Margaret and Hawkeye concoct a plan to build their own. This capule includes Radar's Teddy bear, a pair of boots, a dress from Klinger, a fishing lure, and a bottle of booze, which Margaret refuses to put in until Charles reminds her that it will be over 150 years old when the capsule is opened. Klinger tries to deal with a female sniper who was captured with a high powered rifle. (note: This was the final moments for everyone as G.F.A was filmed prior to this.
GOODBYE FAREWELL AND AMEN - The final episode is the most watched single show in the history of television, a record that is likely to never be broken. Nice to finally see it on DVD, and totally uncut.
Hawkeye is in a mental ward suffering from a complete breakdown after a rather disturbing bus ride after a day at the beach. Charles deals with the long delayed building of a latrine. He "captures" some North Koreans whom he fears will kill him when they reach into a motorcycle. They pull out insturments and proceed to drive Charles nuts while he tries to listen to Mozart. They play Mozart, and then he starts to train them classically.
Mulcahy must deal with possible deafness after trying to save some P.O.W's being held at the unit when the camp is shelled. B.J gets orders to go home early, which Potter says is unfair to the rest of the camp many of whom have been there longer. Potter let's him go after the entire camp, after seeing pictures of Erin, cheers at B.J's cries to be there for his daughter's second birthday. B.J leaves shortly before Hawkeye returns from his time away.
Klinger starts to have strong feelings for a Korean Woman, who was brought in as a sniper suspect, in As Time Goes By. He eventually asks her to marry him. She accepts.
Finally, after the all the wounded are finally gone, they entire camp sits down to talk about what their plans are. Potter will become semi-retired, and open the backroom as an office. Hawkeye will take over as the doctor in Crab Apple Cove. He says that after the experiences there "Being where the action is isn't all it's cracked up to be, for that neither is cracking up!" He figures that he wants to be able to talk to patients so he'll be a simple doctor in his home town. B.J says that he met this little cookie in the airport who begged him to run away with her "I figure what the heck" then says he's only kidding.
Everyone talks about getting home. Everyone, except that is, for Klinger, who's staying in Korea. Because his fiancee needs to find her family first.
Their final day together includes Klinger's marriage and lot's of tearful goodbyes, including a nice exchange between Charles and Margaret who've never really seen eye-to-eye.
All in all a great episode and I couldn't think of a better way to end the show. Klinger staying in Korea after all his attempts to get a section-8. Mulcahy, a priest, dealing with deafness. Charles facing serious issues with music after the prisoners he was working with and befriends are all killed aside from one. B.J and Hawkeye who've become the best of friends realizing that they may never see eachother again.

As the eleventh season begins, rumors are running rampant around camp. One rumor has everyone believing that Marilyn Monroe is going to pay the 4077 a special visit, while another claims that the peace talks are finally making headway. This second rumor gets Margaret thinking after Charles mentions how a Los Angeles skyscraper had a time capsule built into its cornerstone. Although he thinks the idea is insane, Margaret decides to make a time capsule of her own to bury in camp. "We could put something in the ground to remind people we were here," she suggested. With Hawkeye's help, items from around camp were gathered up for the capsule: a chopper's broken fan belt, Radar's teddy bear, one of Henry Blake's fishing flies, a bottle of Charles's cognac and Father Mulcahy's boxing gloves. And finally, the gang of the 4077 hears the announcement they've been waiting for:"This is Robert Pierpoint speaking to you from nearby Panmunjom. It is one minute before ten p.m. We can still hear the sound of nearby artillery. At some point during the next few seconds, the guns should go silent, as the cease-fire officially goes into effect...There it is. That's the sound of peace."

All in the Family - The Complete Second Season (1971) Review

All in the Family - The Complete Second Season (1971)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At last, Season Two of "All in the Family," arguably the best comedy series ever made, is coming to DVD! Here are the episodes from season two, as they were aired and in the order they should be on on DVD:
#1 The Saga of Cousin Oscar -- Archie is incensed when his sponging cousin Oscar has the nerve to drop dead in the upstairs bedroom.
#2 Gloria Poses in the Nude -- Mike has second thoughts after he agrees to let Gloria pose as a nude model for one of his artist friends (David Soul).
#3 Archie in the Lock-Up -- Archie suffers his ultimate indignity when he's arrested along with a group of radicals at a protest rally.
#4 Edith Writes a Song -- SOOOO funny!! A pair of burglars (Cleavon Little and Demond Wilson, who would go on to be Lamont in "Sanford and Son") holds the family at bay with Archie's own pistol.
#5 Flashback: Mike Meets Archie -- On the Stivics' first wedding anniversary, the family recalls the day Archie and Michael met.
#6 The Election Story -- Mike and Gloria campaign for the liberal candidate in a local election, while Archie places himself in the opposing camp.
#7 Edith's Accident -- A priest pays a call to reward Edith's honesty for leaving a note on his car after she accidentally dents it with a large can of cling peaches.
#8 The Blockbuster -- An unscrupulous black real-estate salesman tempts Archie to sell his house to a black family at an inflated price.
#9 Mike's Problem -- Gloria is upset when Mike's nervousness over his grades causes him to become temporarily impotent.
#10 The Insurance Is Canceled -- Archie lays off a Puerto Rican worker during a cutback at the dock; and his homeowner's policy is canceled when his neighborhood is redlined as a bad risk.
#11 The Man in the Street -- Archie Bunker anticipates becoming the voice of the American working man when his man-on-the-street interview is scheduled to appear on Walter Cronkite's Evening News.
#12 Cousin Maude's Visit -- Edith's feisty cousin, Maude (Bea Arthur), drops in for a visit during a flu epidemic at the Bunker House.
#13 Christmas Day at the Bunkers -- Archie casts a pall on the family's Yuletide spirits when he complains that he was passed over for this year's Christmas bonus.
#14 The Elevator Story -- Archie gets caught in an elevator, along with a pregnant Puerto Rican and her husband, an aging hippie, and an erudite black businessman.
#15 Edith's Problem -- Edith is suddenly moody and irritable with the approach of menopause.
#16 Archie and the FBI -- Archie's paranoia during a mysterious government investigation drives him to betray a long-standing friendship.
#17 Mike's Mysterious Son -- An old girlfriend of Mike's suddenly arrives at the Bunkers' with a four-year-old boy who she claims is his son.
#18 Archie Sees a Mugging -- Archie refuses to get involved with the police, even though he's the only witness to a neighborhood mugging.
#19 Archie and Edith Alone -- The Bunkers are on their own for eight days after Mike and Gloria go off to spend a week at a commune.
#20 Edith Gets a Mink -- Archie is too proud to let Edith accept a mink stole from her cousin Amelia, until he sees a chance to make a $300 profit.
#21 Sammy's Visit -- Sammy Davis, Jr., encounters Archie Bunker in all his glory when the star ventures out to Queens to retrieve a briefcase he left in Munson's taxicab.
#22 Edith the Judge -- Edith arbitrates a dispute between Archie and the irate proprietor of a laundromat.
#23 Archie Is Jealous -- Archie is disturbed to discover that Edith once spent an entire weekend with an old beau.
#24 Maude -- The Bunkers attend the wedding of cousin Maude's daughter, Carol. This episode served as the pilot for "Maude".
The second season of "All in the Family" gave us a more sympathetic Archie to care about, and was also when the entire ensemble of actors came to work together, completely in their characters now. Few tv comedy shows ever came close to it, either before or since, and what a pleasure to have these on DVD! Let's hope maybe there are a few nice "extras" on this set though, as Season One had ZIP!

A Different World - Season 1 (1987) Review

A Different World - Season 1 (1987)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Different World Season One is now available on DVD for the very first time. The 4 DVD box set includes 22 episodes from the shows first season and one bonus episode from a later season.
A Different World was created as a spin off series for second to oldest Cosby Show daughter Denise Huxtable portrayed by actress Lisa Bonet. The shwo chronicled her life at a ficticious Historically Black College named Hillman.
A lot of A Different World fans and critics judge the shows first season pretty harshly. Season one, like many television series, was a time of trial and error. As the show would progress it would deal with more serious topics and the writing improved, even still season one was enjoyable.
The DVD box set includes a composition like booklet titled A Different World-Season One Big Laughs On Campus. This booklet is an episode guide and also includes trivia and random facts about the season.
Season One primarily dealt with Lisa Bonet (Denise), and her two roommates Maggie (Marisa Tomei) and Jaleesa (Dawnn Lewis). Denise was away from home for the first time. Her roommate Jaleesa was twenty six and divorced and Maggie was a white girl at an all black college (although no one really made too much of a mention about this.) Acclaimed actress Loretta Devine was the first dorm mother Stevie. She had a small son and was replaced midseason by Mary Alice who took over the dorm mother role as Lettie.
It's a really great season as we are introduced to Whitley. Whitley's voice seems especially high pitched during this season. As the show continued through the years Whitley and Dwayne would become the stars of the show.
Season one was enjoyable but the show would really heat up and become Must See TV in later seasons. Producers of the DVD have provided fans with a taste of what's to come by including the episode "Homie Don't Ya Know Me," from the shows 6th season. The show includes a guest appearance from slain rapper Tupac Shakur. In this episode Leena (Jada Pinkett Smith) is visited on campus by her hometown friend (Monica Calhoun). Her friend happens to bring along Leena's ex-boyfriend Piccollo (Tupac Shakur). Piccollo is set on trying to get Leena back and tries his best to punk her current beau (Bumper Robinson). The two men eventually get into a physical confrontation regarding Leena who not only has to deal with this drama but who finds herself torn between her friends from Baltimore and her friends from Hillman. This episode has run in syndication but never aired during the shows NBC run. This episode can be found on disc 4 with the bonus materials.
Also included on Disc 4 is a E! Entertainment special titled "A Different World: I Was A Network TV Star." Show regulars Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl Bell, Dawnn Lewis and several cast members who joined the show later in it's run appear in this featurette. The cast members and producer Debbie Allen sit around and reminisce about the show--and dish about all of the big stars who appeared on A Different World. It's a great short feature. Disc 4 also includes bloopers.
The show would change in Season 2 with characters Denise and Maggie gone from the show and several new characters introduced including Freddy (Cree Summer). Hopefully, season two will arrive on DVD soon.

The Cosby Show - Season 6 (1984) Review

The Cosby Show - Season 6 (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This item will be released along with the season 5 set on November 6. The cast is slightly larger than ever before now, with Joseph C. Phillips and future superstar-teen idol Raven Symone joining the cast. Also,we,who were fans of NBC's The Cosby Show since its 1984 premiere, welcome back Lisa Bonet as a regular. Denise Huxtable Kendall(Bonet) and her new husband navy Lieutenant Martin(Phillips) pay a visit to the Huxtable home with previously divorced Martin's 3-year-old daughter Olivia(RS) in tow. Of course Cliff(Bill Cosby) and Clair(Phylicia Rashad) were at first shockingly surprised but slowly adjusted to Denise's new roles as wife and stepmother. Ten-year-old Rudy(Keshia Knight Pulliam) is no longer cute, but Cliff just simply adores the cuteness of Olivia. Also we'll see Theo(Malcolm Jamal Warner) finally getting his own place, but not for long. He wasn't too far away from his parents' Brooklyn,New York home. He wound up moving back in with his parents and at one point this season,Clair had no desire to take Theo back(she and Cliff were upset with Theo at the time). In fact,at that time,he was living with his girlfriend Justine(the late Michelle Thomas) and her folks. Also,we see Denise, with Olivia, babysitting her sister Sondra's(Sabrina LeBeauf) twins Winnie and Nelson who themselves, wreck havoc in the Tibidaux household while Sondra and her husband Elvin(Geoffrey Owens) are out for the evening. Denise was just driven crazy by the obnoxious behavior of her niece and nephew. Vanessa(Tempest Bledsoe) and her friends go out-of-state(unbeknownst to Cliff and Clair) to attend a concert. But their tickets wound up being stolen and the girls had no transportation back to New York. Clair was so pissed that she grounded 16-year-old Vanessa. Elvin volunteers as an elf for a Christmas benefit. The other episodes are great. For the fifth and final time,TCS finished at #1 this season, this time tied with ABC's Roseanne, which was also produced by Tom Werner,Marcy Carsey and Caryn Sneider Mandabach. Bonet stayed on TCS as a regular for season 7,but she would be gone thereafter.

The Cosby Show appeared on NBC from 1984 to 1992, becoming one of the most popular programs in the history of television. The Cosby Show depicted a close-knit and prosperous African-American family (The Huxtables) that dwelled in New York City. Dr. Heathcliff (OB-GYN) and Clair (attorney) Huxtable were a happily married, dual-profession couple with aspirations of raising their 5 children in an uplifting, positive environment. The Cosby Show held TV's #1 slot for a record 5 consecutive years (1985 to 1990) and stayed in the Top 20 shows for all eight seasons it was on NBC.

Three's Company: Season Three (1977) Review

Three's Company: Season Three (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A lot of fans have said that season 3 was the golden year of Three's Company and I couldn't agree more.
This season was the one when everyone was watching and was #1 in the ratings. We see Chrissy, Jack and Janet (and the Roepers) in their prime; They've grown used to the set and the characters are interacting like a well-oiled machine.
The transfer is MUCH better than season 1, which I still think was pushed out too early due to the passing of John Ritter. The extras are almost as good as season 2. We get to see the second pilot with "the other Chrissy" and turns out it was the second episode of the series. Kind of weird, isn't it? Regardless, it is interesting seeing another Chrissy but the character is so overdone I could see why they replaced her with Suzanne Somers.
Along with the extras is another memorandum to John Ritter with interviews from a lot of the cast (with the exception of Suzanne Somers, who in my opinion needs to grow up and be a part of this great DVD set.) There's also another bloopers reel as well as "the best of" moments of the main characters.
There's also a great function to play all the episodes of each disc (which is great if you're lazy like me.) The only thing I wish would be they would insert chapters within the episodes. Hitting the forward button takes you to the next episode rather than past the opening credits or otherwise. All the original openers along with promos from John Ritter and ending tags have all be reinserted, so on the disc is what you saw when it originally aired.
For fans, always recommended. Four stars.
