The Twilight Zone: The Complete Definitive Collection (1959) Review

The Twilight Zone: The Complete Definitive Collection (1959)

Giving this set a bad rating because you already bought an earlier set is doing any potential buyers of this set a grave injustice.
It is, simply, astonishing. Why? Start with digital transfers from the original camera negatives and magnetic tracks. Add commentaries for the majority of episodes. And multiple commentaries for several episodes. Add Rod Serling's college lectures used for commentaries. Add interviews with cast and crew members. Add isolated msic scores. Add intros and outros. Add network promo spots. Add the TWILIGHT ZONE radio dramas and comic books...I could go on but why bother? If you are a TWILIGHT ZONE FAN, you won't be disappointed.

I just loved this show and its great to be able to finish off all 5 seasons on dvd!
There are 30 Episodes for Season 5. It really contains some great episodes: My Two favorite season 5 episodes are: Car For Sale and Come Blow Your Top!
Come Blow Your Top had it all. By the fifth season Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton had perfected their roles as Gomer and Sgt Carter respectvely. This storyline exemplified what the entire series was about. Well respected and tough as nails Sgt Carter trying his best to maintain a top notch platoon while the often clumsy but good natured Gomer seemed to always find a way to make waves and get under the Sergeants skin. This episode featured Alan Melvin as Sgt Hacker who put in one of his best performances of the series as he enlisted the help of Gomer to make Sgt Carter blow his top and win a bet at the same time.
121 Car For Sale 9/27/1968
122 Corporal Duke 9/4/1968

The Mod Squad - Season 1, Volume 1 (1968) Review

The Mod Squad - Season 1, Volume 1 (1968)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Time to rejoice, the original counter-culture Classic TV Police Series phenomenon that remains an iconic favorite, replete with one of the best and most memorable TV musical themes ever composed, will at along last be released on DVD in season boxed sets. Can you dig it?
Season 1 Set 1 will include the first 13 episodes and is expected to include interviews with the cast.
Premiering Sept. 24, 1968, during the height of the Viet Nam War and Civil Rights Movement, Mod Squad lasted for five action packed seasons with episodes that dealt as much with social issues as it did crime in the streets.
Set in Los Angeles, the premiss was simple enough: Three young people in trouble with the law are given the opportunity of avoiding jail sentences by infiltrating the counter-culture as undercover cops and exposing criminal who prey on youth. The idea is for them to bridge the generation gap between the youth and the "fuzz."
The three "delinquents" were Pete Cochran, portrayed by Michael Cole, who was arrested for car theft; Julie Barnes, portrayed by Peggy Lipton, who ran away from her prostitute mother in San Francisco; and Lincoln Hayes, portrayed by Clarence Williams III, who was arrested during the Watts riots. Tough talking Capt. Adam Greer, portrayed by Tige Andrews, was in charge of the special squad and eventually became a father-figure to them. (Lipton, who later played Norma the waitress in another cult classic - Twin Peaks - was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Julie, and won a Golden Globe in 1970 for her portrayal of the character.)
In the series, Cochran drove an old green "woody" side-paneled stationwagon that became a lasting symbol of the show, along with cooooool bell-bottomed pants! Sadly, the wheels were destroyed in the second season when the car was set ablaze by an arsonist.
The stellar series spawned a block-buster movie in the 1990's that was horrible by comparison, failing in all respects to capture the chemistry and remarkably innocent sincerity of the original.
Included in this set are the first 13 of the 26 episodes that comprised the first season: Teeth of the Barracuda: Bad Man on Campus; What a Pretty Bus; When Smitty Comes Marching Home; You Can't Tell the Players Without a Programmer; A Time to Love, A Time to Cry; Find Tara Chapman; The Price of Terror; A Quiet Weekend in the Country; Love; Twinkle, Twinkle Little Starlet; and The Guru.
Episodes expected in the Season 1 Volume 2 DVD set are: The Sunday Drivers; Hello Mother, My Name is Julie; Flight Five Doesn't Answer; Shell Game; Fear is the Bucking Horse; A Hint of Darkness, A Hint of Light; The Uptight Town; A Reign of Guns; A Run for the Money; Child of Sorrow, Child of Light; Keep the Faith, Baby; Captain Greer, Call Surgery; Peace Now - Arly Blau; and A Seat by the Window.
Created by the legendary TV mogul Aaron Spelling, he produced it along with Danny Thomas and Sheldon Leonard. Harve Bennett replaced Spelling in later seasons.

Meet Pete, Linc and Julie: The Mod Squad. This trio consisted of rich, long-haired Pete Cochran, Lincoln "Linc" Hayes from the tough streets of inner city Los Angeles, and beautiful flower child Julie Barnes, a runaway from San Francisco. They're recruited by police captain Adam Greer (Tiger Andrews) for a covert unit that will help bridge the generation gap. Each week these three cops with love beads wrestled with criminals – and their own consciences. They may have been the "fuzz," but they were determined to never compromise their values. They were The Mod Squad!

The Flying Nun - The Complete First Season (1967) Review

The Flying Nun - The Complete First Season (1967)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Flying Nun", which premiered in late 1967 has always been a great favourite of mine and really was one of the last of the fantasy comedies which had their heyday in the 1960's. Following on from such legendary shows as the classic "Bewitched", "I Dream of Jeannie", and "The Munsters", this situation comedy about a young novice nun who could fly benefited from not only a totally charming premise but boasted a cast lineup that was second to none. Despite having a popular success with the short lived "Gidget" television series the previous year it was "The Flying Nun", beginning in 1967 that really brought stardom to a very young Sally Field in the role of the perky and often trouble plagued Sister Bertrille. Despite her own misgivings about her involvement in the series Sally Field was perfect casting in the lead role of the air borne nun and with her spunky energetic playing she charmed an entire generation of television watchers, myself included. Ably supported by Madeleine Sherwood as the stern but caring Mother Superior, the delightful Marge Redmond as Sister Jacqueline; Sister Bertrille's accomplice in many crazy schemes, and Shelley Morrison as the English mangling Sister Sixto; these women managed to present comical yet dignified interpretations of women working in the service of God that where above all else extremely likeable. "The Flying Nun", also managed to combine with its broad sitcom humour many moments of great warmth and emotion and really succeeded in humanizing much of the great work carried out by nuns.
The "Complete First Season" of "The Flying Nun", contains all 29 episodes of the 1967-1968 season plus the original pilot which introduces all the characters and the locales that we grew to know so well over the three seasons that the show ran. I believe that all of the episodes maintain a high standard thanks to the talented cast and there definitely some standouts that help illustrate the great charm that this series held for viewers in the late 1960's. Some of my favourites are "Ah Love, Could You And I Conspire", a very funny story about the nuns taking a gangster's girlfriend under their protection with hilarious results. "The Dig In", where Sister Bertrille matches wits with a cynical escaped prisoner, the beautiful "Wailing in a Winter Wonderland", which is a touching Christmas story where Sister Bertrille goes to great lengths to make an elderly Nun's last wish come true, and "The Sister and the Old Salt", where Sister Bertrille becomes the inspiration to an old man who has a very big dream he wants to fulfill. One episode "The Reconversion of Sister Shapiro", which tells of a young jewish girl who wants to be just like Sister Bertrille even contains some clips from Sally Field's previous series "Gidget", in a showing of "old home movies", where Sister Bertrille tries to point out to the young girl the need to live a bit and have some fun before making serious plans about what to do with your life. These and other episodes all contain nice little morals in among their humour which often surprisingly make them quite timely even for today's audiences. In the accompanying interview with Sally Field which is the only extra on the DVD Sally Field talks of her difficulty in working on the series at a time when the world was changing so quickly and certainly this series along with possibly "The Brady Bunch", was really the last of the "cute" series to be produced near the end of the 1960's decade before more harder edged programs such as "MASH", and "All in the family", took television off in a totally different direction. For nostalgia buffs like myself however these fantasy series of the 1960's will always hold special places in our hearts and I never tire of the escapades of the bubbly Sister Bertrille and the Nuns of the Convent San Tanco.
A popular target for those strange books by even stranger authors highlighting supposedly the worst television shows of all time "The Flying Nun", generally makes their "lists", on a regular basis. Often joined by the likes of "My Mother the Car" and "Gilligan's Island", I've often wondered about these people's lack of ability to look beyond the wild premise of the show to see all the great work that went on in the creation of shows like "The Flying Nun". Considering the poor standards on present day television viewers could do alot worse than the harmless antics of Sister Bertrille and her fellow sisters at the Convent San Tanco. For a journey back to a far more innocent time on television "The Flying Nun", makes essential viewing and never fails to leave a big smile on my face at the end of each episode. Hopefully Seasons Two and Three will follow this first season release soon onto DVD so that we can enjoy in full the funny antics of Sally Field and her friends in properly restored prints of this special little series. Enjoy!

(More customer reviews)
The Complete Second Season of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone is now on DVD. This second season contains all 29 episodes on 5 disks. It is full frame and is about 900 minutes.
I don't have a favorite season; there are great episodes from each. I am really enjoying entire seasons being released at once.1) King Nine Will Not Return - A World War II captain wakes up in the desert, next to his crashed plane.
2) Man in the Bottle - A shop owner finds an old bottle which contains a genie which grants him 4 wishes.
3) Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room - A smalltime hood is ordered to commit a murder and when he looks into a mirror he sees himself with courage.
4) A Thing About Machines - A writer believes the machines in his home are against him.
5) The Howling Man - A man finds refuge in a monastery during a storm and finds an unusual prisoner.
6) The Eye of the Beholder - A woman goes through treatments to make herself normal so she can fit into society.
7) Nick of Time - A newlywed becomes obsessed by a fortune-telling machine when they are stranded with car trouble.
8) The Lateness of the Hour - A scientist creates robot servants and his daughter feels a little unusual.
9) The Trouble with Templeton - Templeton is an aging actor who longs for the old days when his wife was alive.
10) A Most Unusual Camera - A couple have stolen a camera that takes pictures of events just a few minutes into the future.
11) Night of the Meek - A drunkard Santa Claus discovers a bottomless sack of toys.
12) Dust - A peddler tries to sell a condemned man's father a bag of "magic dust".
13) Back There - A man goes back in time and realizes, he can't change the future by changing the past.
14) The Whole Truth - A "Model A" automobile compels its owner to tell only the truth.
15) The Invaders - An old woman in an old farmhouse encounters tiny aliens in her attic.
16) A Penny for Your Thoughts - A bank employee flips a coin and when it stands on its end, he is given the ability to read minds.
17) Twenty-Two - Miss Powell has a recurring nightmare ("room for one more") about room 22.
18) The Odyssey of Flight 33 - A commercial aircraft and its passengers travel back to prehistoric times.
19) Mr. Dingle, the Strong - Martians give Luther Dingle the strength of 300 men.
20) Static - Ed Lindsay hates television, so he gets his old radio out of the basement and it can receive programs from the past.
21) The Prime Mover - A man has the ability to control objects with his mind.
22) Long Distance Call - A boy finds he can communicate with his dead grandmother through his toy phone.
23) A Hundred Yards over the Rim - A man in the year 1847 moving west sets out to find medicine for his dying son and winds up in the future.
24) The Rip Van Winkle Caper - Three thieves put themselves into suspended animation for 100 years after stealing a million dollars worth of gold bars.
25) The Silence - A man is offered half a million dollars to remain silent for one year. The bet is taken and won but with a twist at the end.
26) Shadow Play - A man is trapped in a recurring nightmare where he tries to persuade those who are sentencing him to death that this is not reality.
27) The Mind and the Matter - After reading a book on the "power of thought" a man is able create the world exactly as he wants it.

Mill Creek has put out another great collection of television shows, this time focusing on detective series from the 1950s. Although some of these episodes can be found in other low-priced sets, there are many series sampled here that have never been released on DVD before. Here are the individual episodes you'll find on the disk:The Adventures of Dr. Fu Manchu (1956)
Sir Dennis Nayland-Smith (Lester Matthews) attempts to prevent the evil Dr. Fu Manchu (Glen Gordon) from achieving world domination. Episodes included in this package are: "Death Ships of Fu Manchu" and "Prisoner of Fu Manchu"The Adventures of Ellery Queen (1950)
This ill-fated Dumont network series, featuring Richard Hart as the titular detective, is represented by a single episode: "The Hanging Acrobat"Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955):
A curious choice for inclusion in this set, this series' premise had little to do with detective work. The episodes included can be found in many other public domain offerings: "The Cheney Vase" (starring Darren McGavin and Carolyn Jones) and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (starring Brandon de Wilde and Diana Dors).Burke's Law (1963)
Gene Barry starred as Amos Burke, an independently wealthy Chief of Detectives for the Los Angeles police force. The episode included in this set is "Who Killed Jason Shaw."The Cases of Eddie Drake (1952)
Originally nine episodes of this series, which starred journeyman actor Dan Haggerty, were filmed for CBS, but were never aired. Dumont purchased the group, filmed four additional episodes and released the series to the unsuspecting public in 1952. The episode presented here, "Shoot the Works" shows why CBS choose to cut their losses.Checkmate (1960)
Doug McClure, Anthony George and Sebastian Cabot starred in this series about a high-priced San Francisco detective agency. Episodes included in this package are "Human Touch" and "Nice Guys Finish Last".Code 3 (1957)
Richard Travis starred as the Assistant Sheriff of Los Angeles who introduces the episodes in this police procedural series. Included in this set are "The Benson Case", "The Man with Many Faces", "The Rookie Sheriff" and "The Sniper".Colonel March of Scotland Yard (1956)
Boris Karloff starred as the titular detective, based on the stories of John Dickson Carr. The series were originally released in England. The episode included with this set is "Error at Daybreak".Court of Last Resort (1957)
Founded by Erle Stanley Gardner, the court investigated potentially innocent men and women accused of crimes of which they might be innocent. Lyle Bettger starred as one of the lead investigators. Episode included are: "The Clarence Redding Case", "The Jim Thompson Case", "The John Smith Case" and "The Mary Morales Case".Decoy (1957)
Beverly Garland starred as an undercover New York City policewoman who faced all sorts of perilous situations. Episodes included are: "Fiesta at Midnight", "High Swing", "Night Light", "The Comeback", "The Sound of Tears" and "To Trap a Thief".Dick Tracy (1950)
Ralph Byrd, a capable lead in many B-movie adventure films, could never escape being typecast as Dick Tracy. Despite his aversion to reprising the role, Byrd agreed to play Chester Gould's iconic square-jawed detective in this early TV series because of a paucity of other offers. These six episodes show just how good an actor Byrd really was: "Dick Tracy and Flat Top", "Dick Tracy Meets Heels Beals", "Hijack", "Mole - Part 1 and 2: and "Shaky's Secret Treasure".

Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Presents (1953):
This anthology series included an unsold television pilot for a detective series based on the adventures of Bulldog Drummond. The character was originally created in 1920 for a series of novels about a former British officer who was bored after the excitement of World War I. By the time this 1957 episode, entitled "Bulldog Drummond and `The Ludlow Affair'", aired, Drummond was a British private detective with no connection to the Great War. This episode starred Robert Beatty as Drummond.

Dragnet (1951)
Jack Webb starred as Los Angeles police sergeant Joe Friday in this classic 50s detective series. Twenty-five episode from the series are included in this package - "The Big Ante", "The Big Betty", "The Big Boys", "The Big Break", "The Big Casing", "The Big Cast", "The Big Crime", "The Big False Make", "The Big Frame", "The Big Girl", "The Big Grandpa", "The Big Hit and Run Killer", "The Big Lift", "The Big Little Jesus", "The Big Look", "The Big Oskar", "The Big Phone Call", "The Big Producer", "The Big Score", "The Big Send-Off", "The Big September Man", "The Big Seventeen", "The Big Shoplift", "The Big Show", "The Big .22 Rifle for Christmas".Federal Men (1950) aka Treasury Men in Action
The Chief (Walter Greaza) leads his team of agents against counterfeiters and other criminals whose misdeeds fall under the Department's purview. Episodes in this set include: "The Case of the Chartered Chiseler", "The Case of the Fatal Error", "The Case of the Iron Curtain", "The Case of the Man Outside" and "The Case of the Ready Guns".

Follow That Man (1949) aka Man Against Crime
Ralph Bellamy played Mike Barnett, a two-fisted private detective operating in New York City. Originally broadcast live, the episodes in this set were filmed for the series fourth and fifth season. The shows included are "Ferry Boat", "Fraternity of Five", "Paradise Lost", "The Cube Root of Evil", "The Iceman" and "The Silken Touch".

Front Page Detective (1951)
Edmund Lowe played a hard-bitten newspaper reporter who investigated crime stories for a major eastern newspaper. Episodes included are "Little Black Book", "Murder Rides the Night Train", "Seven Seas to Danger".

Gang Busters (1951)
An anthology series based on the Phillip H. Lord's long-running radio program, this series alternated with Dragnet throughout 1951 because Jack Webb was unable to produce enough episodes of his iconic show to air every week. Although both series received extremely high ratings, Gang Busters was canceled after only 13 episodes. Episodes included are "The Bayless Case", "The Phantom", "The Scissors Case" and "The Unholy Three".

I'm the Law (1953)
George Raft played a gritty New York police detective in this series which ran only 26 episodes. This set features episodes "O Sole Mio", "The Cowboy and the Blind Man Story" and "The Trucking Story".The Lawless Years (1959)
Sixteen years before James Gregory portrayed Police Inspector Frank Luger on Barney Miller, he fought organized crime in 1920s New York as detective Barney Ruditsky. The series lasted two years. Episodes in this set are "Framed", "The Cutie Jaffe Story", "The Dutch Schultz Story", "The Morrison Story", "The Poison Ivy Story" and "The Story of Lucky Silva".

Lock-Up (1959)
Defense attorney Herbert Maris (Macdonald Carey) protects his unjustly accused clients each week. The eight episodes included in this set are "Flying High", "His Father's Footsteps", "Murder Is a Gamble", "Society Doctor", "The Beau and Arrow Case", "The Case of Joe Slade", "The Case of Nan Havens" and "Top Secret".

Lone Wolf (1955)
Louis Hayward was one of the few A-list Hollywood stars who embraced television almost from its inception. He plays Michael Lanyard, a swaggering P.I. who leaves a coin with a wolf on it as a calling card. Episodes in this set are "The Beverly Hills Story", "The Karachi Story", "The Las Vegas Story, "The Oil Story" and "The Stamp Story".

The Man Behind the Badge (1953)

Man with a Camera (1958)

Mannix (1967)
Mike Connors starred in this violent, long-running series as Joe Mannix, a private detective who seemed to get shot in the shoulder every other week. The series ran for eight years. Episodes from the show are "Nothing Ever Works Twice" and "The Cost of a Vacation".Martin Kane, Private Eye (1949)
This NBC detective series survived numerous cast changes to run for five years. Kane was played by William Gargan, Lloyd Nolan and Lee Tracy and episodes from each actor's tenure are included in this package. About the only constant during the series' run was Happy's tobacco shop, which allowed the tobacco company that was series' sponsor to have its advertisements built into the fabric of the show. Episodes included are "A Crooner Is Murdered", "A Jockey Is Murdered", "Altered Will", "The Black Pearl", "The Comic Strip Killer", and "The District Attorney Killer".

Miami Undercover (1961)
